Goddess Of Blah
Jill Mansell's books (that I have had the misfortune to read) have so far been an insult to any self-respecting intelligent (or even semi-intelligent) audience. All seem to follow the same premise of ultra chick lit trash. Be prepared to lose brain cells when reading her trite, clichéd rubbish.

The heroine is generally naïve and either unsuccessful in her career or from a disadvantaged background. A confirmed sap, she's invariably misunderstood by our dashing rich “hero” - and is usually betrayed...more

Miranda works as a junior stylist at Fenn Lomax salon. Everyday she shares her lunch with a bum, and runs errands for the celebrity clientele the salon caters too. At the end of the day, she goes home to help out her elderly landlady. Miranda just wants to find a guy, fall in love, and have the white picket fence.

Chloe Malone works for Miranda's landlady's son at a gift shop. She is an excellent employee, but hasn't been herself lately. When the stick turns blue, Chloe gets frazzled. Her husband...more

My first thought upon picking up this book club selection was who in the world writes a 500 page Chick Lit book? I mean, that really defeats the purpose of something light and easy to read on the beach. But I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by this huge book.

It was confusing in certain parts because the story is told from multiple perspectives and at times they were disjointed. And some of the British humor and terminology lost me for a moment, but the overall tone of the book was pretty...more

There were so many things wrong with this book it's hard to know where to begin. Let's start with the main character Miranda. There was absolutely no character development at all her. The only thing you know about her is that she has colorful hair, falls in love & into bed with just about every guy she meets, and is flighty. I felt more of a connection with most of the secondary characters which were slightly more developed than I did with Miranda.

At one point in the book it felt as if the...more

But enjoyable, nonetheless.
Miranda is the trainee at one of the trendiest hair salons. It's not quite clear how she has managed to keep her job- her regular tardiness is something of a joke among the shop workers. She lives with an elderly lady, doing things around the house for cheap rent. She's a bit of a pushover, always wanting to help others out. She's a bit of a dull character, with a ridiculously complicated love life. She first falls in love with Greg, only to find he isn't what she thin...more

Not as enjoyable as I had hoped, but ok for chick lit.

STORY BRIEF:
Miranda works in a hair salon washing hair and sweeping floors. She is a fun quirky personality with odd colored hair. She rents a room from and lives with Florence who is wheelchair bound due to arthritis. Miranda runs errands and does chores for Florence in return for low rent. Chloe unexpectedly becomes pregnant. Her husband Greg leaves her because he doesn’t want children. When Florence learns this she invites Chloe to live wi...more

It took me only 3 days to read it, so it must be good. It is a light read, fun and flirty, and at the same time real, criss-crossed and zig-zaged.

The main character is Miranda,a junior stylist (complete with maroon and blue streaked hair) that works at the salon of the famous Fenn Lomax, stylist of the stars, that always gets herself in trouble, but she has a big heart and a feisty personality.

There are so many things that are happening, there is Chloe and Greg, but wait a minute Greg is Miranda...more

This book did not disapoint. It obviously sucked me right in considering I read about 500 pages in about two days. Jill Mansell always does an astounding job with several storylines and developed characters. Two things did catch me up though: #1 the lack of Greg's reaction and status following the wedding set up trick (and will the filming air on tv? we never find out) also #2: The incident of Mile's death and Miranda's reaction to it, or lack thereof. It was explained that she didn't want to ta...more

"Miranda's Big Mistake" was the second Jill Mansell book I read (Millie's Fling was the first one) and I have to say I have enjoyed them both and look forward to reading more of her work. For me, her novels play out like an hilarious British comedy. If you're an American and you've never seen a British comedy...you simply must! British humor is sarcastic and witty and just downright fun!! My husband's family is British (on his mother's side) and I lived in England as a child, so imagining the di...more

Gostei imenso de todas as personagens, menos,...more

Miranda's Big Mistake is a very long book. If it was shorter, I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more than I did. Sadly, the problems I had with it far outweigh the good.

While reading it on my Kindle, there's a huge formatting mistake. There are no spaces or dashes to indicate a character shift. One second I read about one character then the next I would read about another. It was all very jarring.

So I mentioned that this was a long book. What's funny is that it could have ended 50% through t...more

Read the full review at Coffee & Wizards. For now, here's a sneak peek...

Because I so rarely read adult novels, I tend to judge them less harshly than young adult novels. Perhaps it’s because I expect adult readers to know better, while I expect young adult readers to not always have the skills to see beyond the character tropes and sexism. Maybe that’s not fair of me, but I feel that to be a young adult author is a similar job to a teacher: you have young minds in your hands; you’d better n...more

Noveh Contemporary Romance yang ringan dan menyenangkan. Asik dibaca sambil menunggu cucian dengan bergelas-gelas latte dan bertumpuk-tumpuk snack..

Miranda itu pemabawa masalah. Ibunya sendiri bilang begitu. Entah bagaimana Miranda selalu menarik masalah untuk datang menghampirinya. Mungkin karena hati Miranda yang terlalu baik..

just a very simple book about falling in love. but in a way it would never happen in the real world. it took al long time that the story started, you really need to put yourself to reading again and again. But once you are over one thirth of the book the story will sweep you away, you will see what is comming but still you want to read it.

It is not the best book i ever read, more a nice distraction from the real world. There aren't really unrealistic moments in the book but taking all the "speci...more

**SEMI-SPOLIERS** The moral of this story: revenge is a BITCH! This story is about Miranda, who looks for love in all the wrong places. She finally finds someone she sets her heart on, and finds out that he has left his pregnant wife, who just happens to be her new roommate. The girls plot together to seek their revenge, and find themselves single and back to looking for love.

All of the characters in this book are soooo well-developed and they all have these great personalities! I am typically n...more

This was another fun read from Jill Mansell. Again, her cast of characters are so loveable that you want them to be your friends! Miranda's life seems to be a mess - but she is surrounded by many friends who love her and care about her - from her landlady Florence, her boss at the hair salon, Fenn and her best friend Bev. Even though she seems to have her share of bad luck when it comes to men, it seems that everyone who comes in contact with her is instantly taken in by her warm and giving pers...more

Another fun, light read for fans of contemporary British romance, this time featuring several main characters who find their lives unexpectedly intersecting: Chloe, whose husband Greg leaves her when she learns she is pregnant; Miranda, who falls for Greg(who lies to her and says he's not married); wheelchair-bound Florence, who is landlady to Miranda and who offers Chloe a place to stay (Chloe works for Florence's son Bruce); Fenn, celebrity hair stylist (whose salon employs Miranda as a junior...more

I really enjoyed the other Mansell I've read: this one was disappointing. For one thing (this is my third Mansell book), I'm starting to notice that the characters are all really quite similar. For another thing, does every single person in the book really have to get together with someone? It was a little too over the top. And the female fantasy of a handsome famous person dumping his supermodel girlfriend so he could be with the regular girl was just too much for me. Come to think of it, two c...more

I think the problem is with Jill Mansell is that she gets a lot of good ideas, and the feels obligated to cram all these good ideas into the same book. So instead of having one solid idea thought out all the way, you instead get a bunch of good ideas not really grown to fruition. It's frustrating, especially since the books are absurdly long. Who knew you'd have to rush an ending in a 437 page book?

Take the major idea of the book, and develop it. Don't set it up nicely, then forget about to spen...more

Fantastic book! It really read like a movie (at least in my mind). It was my first and definitely not my last Jill Mansell novel. I'm so glad there was a sale at the Kindle store otherwise I don't know when i would've finally stumbled upon one of her books. There were many characters and many underlying storylines but they all came together at one point or another, making for even more entangled fun! This book truly had it all: love, revenge, new beginnings, good-byes, crazy hair, fast cars, goo...more

i would rate this 3.5 or 3.75. I needed one more book to reach my goal for 2011 and I needed to read it in just a few days. Perfect go to quick read... anything by Jill Mansell. Again, it was on sale on Kindle and a quick read. Miranda is thrown into a huge hubabaloo of mistaken identity, a married man, and a total crush on another guy. You know how chick-lit goes... all fun and games and romance. LIke I said, a quick easy read- perfect for vacation, a cold snowy day, or when you want to read so...more

Another fabulously witty romance... Miranda just can't get it right - every guy she falls for has some complicated circumstance. As she watches people pair off around her, she wonders if she'll ever find "the one." Or has she already found him?

As a side note: I downloaded the Kindle version of this book from Amazon and I have to say I wasn't impressed. It was fine from a typo/grammatical perspective, but the formatting left something to be desired. The book jumps among the cast of characters a...more

Super fun. The whole book made me smile when I wasn't outright laughing. Totally enjoyed Miranda's messed up love life even though I knew she'd get it right in the end.

This was a nicely constructed comedy of errors. It was reminiscent of one of those smart theatre comedies that rely on precise timing for the comedy to work. It also had a fabulous revenge scheme that was worth the price of the book. All the supporting characters were great, even the walk on characters added their nice bits to the...more

I feel like these books are getting progressively less funny as I read them. And the main characters are getting less likeable. I mean, Miranda's fine. But I don't really like her all that much. I think she was supposed to be... like, quirky and whimsical, but she mostly just came across as kind of weird and slightly obnoxious.

And my favorite relationship wasn't the one she ended up with, either. It was bachelor number 2, actually. Even though that circumstance was completely contrived... Seriou...more

I bought this book because I wanted something light to read, it was ninety-nine cents, and it received decent reviews. This is squeaky clean, British chick lit, but any U.S. readers should be able to follow it despite the slight differences in language, culture, and backdrop.

The main character in this book, Miranda, tries to find love with a few different guys but runs into a lot of bumps along the way. I was not fond of Miranda at all. It is odd that this book is called Miranda’s Big Mistake, s...more

Maybe my relationship with chick-lit is on a break. Maybe I'm just not a fan of THIS particular book. I'm not sure. The characters were so-so. Miranda got on my last nerve. Chloe was all right but I pitied her more than LIKED her. Florence was the best of the lot until I got to trying to figure how she raised such a jerkass as Bruce was. The male characters didn't fair much better, for me. So while I didn't completely dislike the book, there were only a few bits that I really enjoyed. And most o...more

Jill Mansell lives with her partner and children in Bristol, and writes full time. Actually that’s not true; she watches TV, eats fruit gums, admires the rugby players training in the sports field behind her house, and spends hours on the internet marvelling at how many other writers have blogs. Only when she’s completely run out of displacement activities does she write.
