Jill Mansell's books (that I have had the misfortune to read) have so far been an insult to any self-respecting intelligent (or even semi-intelligent) audience. All seem to follow the same premise of ultra chick lit trash. Be prepared to lose brain cells when reading her trite, clichéd rubbish.

My first thought upon picking up this book club selection was who in the world writes a 500 page Chick Lit book? I mean, that really defeats the purpose of something light and easy to read on the beach. But I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by this huge book.

There were so many things wrong with this book it's hard to know where to begin. Let's start with the main character Miranda. There was absolutely no character development at all her. The only thing you know about her is that she has colorful hair, falls in love & into bed with just about every guy she meets, and is flighty. Miranda is the trainee at one of the trendiest hair salons. It's not quite clear how she has managed to keep her job- her regular tardiness is something of a joke among the shop workers. It took me only 3 days to read it, so it must be good. It is a light read,fun and flirty, and at the same time real, criss-crossed and zig-zaged.

The main character is Miranda,a junior stylist (complete with maroon and blue streaked hair) that works at the salon of the famous Fenn Lomax, stylist of the stars, that always gets herself in trouble, but she has a big heart and a feisty personality.

This book did not disapoint. It obviously sucked me right in considering I read about 500 pages in about two days. Jill Mansell always does an astounding job with several storylines and developed characters. Depois de ter andado numa grande indecisão para ler este livro, lá o pedi emprestado à tia mais nova, decidida a que fosse desta que me estreasse nesta escritora. Não tinha quaisquer expectativas, aliás, a vontade para ler esta autora nunca foi muita mas como até tinha um exemplar à mão, e ler mais um livro não faz mal a ninguém, Jill ganhou finalmente direito a ser lida pela minha pessoa.
A minha primeira impressão, depois de trinta páginas, foi de confusão e total aborrecimento, o que fez com que estivesse uns dois dias sem lhe pegar para depois o ler com muito mais calma. Porquê esta impressão inicial? Superficial. Foi a primeira palavra que me veio a cabeça para descrever as primeiras personagens, a acção, os próprios diálogos com que me deparei. Havia ali algo que me estava a repelir mas não ia desistir logo no início! E uma das razões porque não o fiz, foi a maravilhosa da Florence! Quando consegui, um domingo a tarde, sentar-me para ler o resto, li-o todo seguido, quase sem paragens. Espantoso não é?
As desgraças e atribulações eram tantas que eu não conseguia parar de rir. Acontece de praticamente tudo neste livro, como é que é possível? Os momentos hilariantes, a sequência de acontecimentos completamente prováveis e ridículos, demonstram-nos como as situações do dia-a-dia podem levar rumos completamente inesperados, alterando para sempre toda uma vida. Este é para mim, o ponto mais positivo da escrita de Mansell, consegue nos proporcionar uma tarde bem passada, a meio dos exames, com umas boas gargalhadas. Quando me quiser animar, já sei o que ler.
Depois, temos o leque de personagens mais loucas e genuinamente trapalhonas e desastradas que alguma vez vi! Depois de me ter habituado a forma da escritora nos ir relatando as peripécias do grupinho, consegui fazer as pazes com eles mas mesmo assim, as vezes dava-me um ataque de nervos e uma irritação profunda. Como por exemplo, eu ter percebido como aquilo ia acabar logo nas primeiras páginas e a escritora dar um milhão de voltas a história para acabar exactamente dessa maneira. Divertido mas muitas vezes exagerado.
Se fosse um nadinha mais curto se calhar tinha gostado mais. É que o Denny e a Miranda podiam ter mais cenas juntas se não estivesse lá o Miles, que foi a meu ver, completamente dispensável. Definitivamente, eu teria gostado de ver mais vezes o Denny em acção. Tal como os romances relâmpago da Bev e da Chloe. Foi tudo tão atribulado para depois saber a pouco.
Muito possivelmente, foi por eu não ter engraçado com o livro a primeira. Uma pena, uma vez que hoje são raros os livros que nos permitem rir e esquecer os problemas por umas horas. Mas pode ser que haja uma oportunidade para ler outro livro de Jill e que corra melhor, afinal, não se diz que não a alguém que nos dá momentos divertidos. Vamos ver, qual será a vontade…

But while moving from one catastrophic relationship to another, Miranda continues to overlook the strong and steady guy who befriends her and her flatmates.

But while moving from one catastrophic relationship to another, Miranda continues to overlook the strong and steady guy who befriends her and her flatmates.

I don’t know what it is about books whose authors and settings are across the pond, but I’m absolutely loving them. The atmosphere of this book is so sweet and charming that I was completely drawn into the story from the first word. But though the book is enchanting it had its fair share of sass, snark, and laugh out loud moments. I adored Miranda as a protagonist because she was probably the most unluckiest girl which made her feel more real for me. She had a fair amount of cynicism to go with her never-ending compassion, but I couldn’t help but feel she took things at face value too much. She approached many situations and people with a naivete that ended up hurting her in the end.

The other characters in this book were just as fun and interesting as Miranda. I have to say my favorite was her 70-ish landlord and flatmate. Florence is fresh and spunky and I think she would give Miranda and the other young ladies a run for their money if her arthritis didn’t keep her wheelchair bound. She tickles me thoroughly when she pretends to take a young Latin lover to vex her mooching son and his wife, and she’s forever trying to gently guide Miranda in the right direction. Bev, her friend and co-worker was a bit rigid at first. And although she seems well-meaning, sometimes her concern for Miranda was a tiddly bit tinged with envy. Chloe was sweet but low-key through most of the book. I was happy to see her grow stronger and become more confident by the end of the book.

The men of this novel were just as fascinating. Between errant husband Greg, famous racecar driver Miles, and television producer Danny, Miranda has her hands full on the man front. Her interaction with Miles was dreamy and romantic, which was easy to fall into because Miles is a total dreamboat. But her friendship with Danny was something special. The dialogue beteen the two was witty and snarky and I lived for their verbal sparring. Each gave as good as they got and I believe Miranda didn’t quite know what to do with a man who could match wits with her.

Overall, I was thoroughly entertained by Miranda’s Big Mistake. The characters are wonderful, the dialogue witty, and the story was amazing. With brilliant writing and great pacing, Jill Mansell pens a novel very much worth reading. I already have another novel by Jill Mansell in my TBR pile, and after reading Miranda’s Big Mistake, I am anxious to read it. This one’s a go!

If you read this story, you simply must read it in your head with some sort of accent.
Jill Mansell has once again created a group of core characters that are easily liked and are the type of people you wish you had as your own friends. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and to be honest I would have given it 5 stars; but alas I have two areas of the story I found a bit lacking and confusing:
First, out of respect for the author and potential future readers I don't want to spoil anything, so I'm going to try to lay out my critique without giving anything away.

My biggest fault with this book was the introduction of a couple of characters who seemed to be haphazardly thrown in there, then plucked off the canvas for a hundred or so pages and then plopped back down and made an integral part of the story. The problem with that was that when major things happened to those particular characters, I didn't care and it didn't have meaning for me because those characters had not been in the story enough. That being said, the opposite is also true. I found myself completely enthralled with a few characters, only to have them disappear suddenly, leaving me wondering..."what happened to .....?" This was true even for characters that I didn't like as "persons" but thought were integral parts of the story.

The second area of criticism is purely an aesthetic thing with the book, and a matter of personal preference. Now, I must digress here and say I read the e-book version on my nook, so the actual physical book may be different, I don't know. It was a bit jarring at times to have the scenes between characters change so abruptly. Often times, authors will put in some sort of squiggly line or row of asterisks or something on the page to let you know "ok, I'm done with these characters for a moment, let's see what some of the others are doing" To me, those are like the split second in a show where you know that once scene is done and another is beginning. I found myself with a bit of literary whiplash in a few places throughout the book.

All in all though, a light, easy and fun book. Great for the beach or summer traveling! (less)

Miranda's Big Mistake is a very long book. If it was shorter, I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more than I did. Sadly, the problems I had with it far outweigh the good.

While reading it on my Kindle, there's a huge formatting mistake. There are no spaces or dashes to indicate a character shift. One second I read about one character then the next I would read about another. It was all very jarring.

just a very simple book about falling in love. but in a way it would never happen in the real world. it took al long time that the story started, you really need to put yourself to reading again and again. I think the problem is with Jill Mansell is that she gets a lot of good ideas, and the feels obligated to cram all these good ideas into the same book. So instead of having one solid idea thought out all the way, you instead get a bunch of good ideas not really grown to fruition. It's frustrating, especially since the books are absurdly long. Who knew you'd have to rush an ending in a 437 page book?

A história começou bem, foi desenvolvendo sempre muito divertida e acabou ainda melhor e sem dúvida da melhor maneira. Aliás, esta autora já me vem a habituar, como certamente aos restantes dos seus leitores, a escrita divertida e finais surpreendentes (excluindo o do livro A Felicidade Mora Ao Lado , convenhamos).

O inicio do livro é sem dúvida alguma original. A personagem principal, Miranda, é um estrondo – a começar pelo cabelo característico dela – e muito, muito engraçada. Adorei todas as peripécias porque ela passa. E sem dúvida, o facto de ela ser caridosa e se preocupar com o bem-estar de todos, valeu-lhe a felicidade.

O Danny Delancey – bem como se pode exprimir a adoração por um homem perfeito? Sinceramente, um sem-abrigo assim, quem pode resistir?! Ninguém mesmo.

O Greg – safado, tiveste mesmo aquilo que merecias (o que me fartei de rir) – ainda bem que ele apareceu. Sem ele, nada disto teria sido possível. Mas não deixa de ser um grande sacana.

A Chloe, Fenn, Bev, Johnie, Florence e Tom – são todos adoráveis. Adorei toda a presença deles durante o livro.
Já o Bruce e a Verity, mereciam ter o mesmo que Greg. São outros seres desprezíveis, bolas, que ódio.

Fiquei com pena do que aconteceu ao Miles, mas sem dúvida, que não o queria a ultrapassar o grande Danny, que eu adorei tanto. Apesar de ele também ser perfeito à sua maneira, pelo menos, tive um final se não feliz, nem justo, pelo menos não sofreu mais com a horrível “namorada” (se é que se pode chamar namorada àquilo) dele.

O livro todo é irresistível. Não se consegue simplesmente largar. É uma mistura de acontecimentos em que o leitor dá por si a rir sem parar, ao mesmo tempo enternecido como toda a história.

Adorei. Um dos meus favoritos. A não perder.

Super fun. The whole book made me smile when I wasn't outright laughing. Totally enjoyed Miranda's messed up love life even though I knew she'd get it right in the end.

This was a nicely constructed comedy of errors. It was reminiscent of one of those smart theatre comedies that rely on precise timing for the comedy to work. Shelves: addictive, bechdel-test, fluffy, funny, nook-book

I feel like these books are getting progressively less funny as I read them. And the main characters are getting less likeable. I mean, Miranda's fine. But I don't really like her all that much. I think she was supposed to be... like, quirky and whimsical, but she mostly just came across as kind of weird and slightly obnoxious.

I bought this book because I wanted something light to read, it was ninety-nine cents, and it received decent reviews. This is squeaky clean, British chick lit, but any U.S. readers should be able to follow it despite the slight differences in language, culture, and backdrop.

Maybe my relationship with chick-lit is on a break. Maybe I'm just not a fan of THIS particular book. I'm not sure. The characters were so-so. Miranda got on my last nerve. Chloe was all right but I pitied her more than LIKED her. Florence was the best of the lot until I got to trying to figure how she raised such a jerkass as Bruce was.
