The summer is only just beginning, but Benny "Bounce" Sharp already knows there's going to be some trouble ahead. All he wants to do is use the skate park to learn some new tricks with his best friend, but the park is dominated by Crunch and his gang, and the police chief won’t allow skating anywhere else in town. Everyone tells Benny to stand up to Crunch, but that's easier said than done--especially when Benny makes an ill-advised bet about who will win the upcoming skate competition, with the...more
Benny, Pema, Marcus and Nima are skaters. They have run-ins with the skate-park bully, build their own ramp, and foil the local crime ring. In theory, a middle grade graphic novel about skateboarding sounds like a good idea. And maybe it is for kids who already like skateboarding. But the book is riddled with under-explained lingo and is sorely lacking in finding aids. Ramp Rats could do with a diagram of a skateboard with labeled parts, as well as a glossary. Inserted in the plot (sometimes in...more
I have a few problems with this book as it seems the characters have a disrespect for authority (police and paretns at times). The characters refer to the police as being paid off to be unfair but, still that is no reason to disrespect their authority. The graphics are good, the book contains steps to doing skateboard tricks as well. To me it might be hard to follow once you put the book down but then again I am not a skateboarder. A follow-up at the end of the book with graphics might make it e...more
I'm currtly reading Ramp Rats. It's a pretty good graphic novel book. There's these two characters their names are Bounce, and Pema they want to skate at a skatpark but theres bullys there telling them to leave. I picked this book becuase it involves sports and a little action. The bullys name is Crunch in the book hes the main bully. Im at the part were Bounce is trying to redeam his self becuase his mom think he was involved in a burglary but he wasnt so hes going take a picture of the person w...more
I was reading this at the same time as Wild Ride (also by O'Donnell). When I decided Wild Ride wasn't worth my time, I ditched this book as well.
The artwork was good and the story a basic tale about bullying and the consequences thereof. I thought that this was a more realistic view of bullying than children books tend to convey. I thought that the interruption of the text to show how tricks were done was interesting. I'm not certain if it was effective, but it didn't seem to interrupt it too terribly much.
If I were a kid who actually enjoyed skateboarding I'm certain I would have loved this text, seeing how for once the skaters weren't...more

I'm still not sure how I feel about how well interrupting the narrative to give skateboard lessons actually works, but the story was entertaining enough and I actually learned a few things about skateboarding, so it couldn't have been that bad. It's certainly a creative concept. I'm looking forward to the other one I have checked out from the library- Wild Ride.
