The eventual success of the British colonial establishment in America belied its inauspicious beginnings. Failing twice in the 16th century, it was only with the establishment of Jamestown in 1607 that the English succeeded in placing a permanent settlement in the New World - and even this nearly failed on a number of occasions. Its success can be attributed in part to John Smith, one of the leaders of the expedition and the subject of Alden Vaughan's book.

Smith's early life proved adventurous.

This is a well-written, carefully organized and thoroughly documented review of events surrounding establishment of the Virginia colony at the beginning of the 17th century. Early chapters provide interesting background material on the British efforts to join other European nations in settling the New World. Development of Jamestown and surrounding areas is discussed very clearly in chapters focused on policy, diplomacy, economics, reforms and forging of an American character in this first perma ...more
