Another book from my childhood. Despite its size, I would read through it on an almost constant basis, in awe at the stories and the beautiful illustrations accompanying them. The cover is very dog-eared because of this. The stories are mostly fairly brief which is ideal for someone learning to read. It's also good for just-one-more-story-before-bed situations.

Might qualify as a 'reader' reading level. I realize I don't have a category for juvenile nonfiction. A collection of slightly humorous animal stories, told perfectly to capture the attention of kids. I loved this book as a child, and upon re-reading it this year, found it a little more silly but still good. My biggest issue is simply that so many of his pets aren't spayed or neutered! One of his cats had 104 kittens!

Dick King-Smith was born and raised in Gloucestershire, England, surrounded by pet animals. After twenty years as a farmer, he turned to teaching and then to writing children's books.

Dick writes mostly about animals: farmyard fantasy, as he likes to call it, often about pigs, his special favorites. He enjoys writing for children, meeting the children who read his books, and knowing that they get
