" No good morning?" I asked. "What so fascinating? Cheerleaders practising naked in the parking lot?"
I had high hopes for this book since I love Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampire series. Thankfully Ill Wind didn't disappoint. It was an action packed, witty and unique read that left me craving more.

In this alternate reality, a select few are born with the power to harness the weather (air and water), or fire, or Earth: wardens. They control the world by controlling the natural forces, taking the bite out of storms that would otherwise decimate cities, helping the land regrow after wildfires and so on. Their power is augmented by djinn who do their bidding, but they're not invincible.

I tried...oh how I tried to like this book. After all, I was talked into buying the first 4 in the series at one time. Unfortunately, I just couldn't. I "sort of got through it". And, since I've already purchased the next 3 at the enthusiastic insistence of an employee of Books-A-Million (that's $35 I'll never see again) I plan to read them. But my expectations are not what I'd call high.

Urban fantasy series about an organization (the Weather Wardens) that use specialized powers to keep the weather from destroying the world (along with Earth and Fire Wardens) and the Djinn that they use to assist them.
I love the tone the writer uses. Very fast, witty and quippy. Very big on the "I'm a kick-ass woman who loves muscle cars, sex, and driving fast, but I still love pretty clothes and designer coffees." Several clever turns of phrase here.

This is what goodreads has to say about Ill Wind-
First in the new Weather Warden series...
Joanne Baldwin is a Weather Warden. Usually, all it takes is a wave of her hand to tame the most violent weather. But now, she's trying to outrun another kind of storm: accusations of corruption and murder. So, she's resorting to the very human tactic of running for her life...

OK, the ending! I won't say anything but WOW did not see THAT coming.
I loved this book. It was a fun, easy, popcorn read, but still witty and smart. and If you are a dresden fan you will certainly like this book. Love the characters, love the original story idea.... I couldn't put it down and was sad it was over and that doesn't happen too often!
I felt for the character like I knew her and pulled for her and hated it when things didn't go her way. I love that she is both strong yet More...

This is the first book by Rachel Caine I have read and I must say I enjoyed it. Ill Wind is the first book in the Weather Warden series, where the world's weather is controlled by warden's who each control the different elements of Earth, Wind, Water and Fire.
Joanne is a weather warden and she has the ability to control water and wind. She's also on the run from the World Council as she's been accused of murder. I really like Joanne. She's certainly not a girlie girl as she likes her More...

I'll try to write this without any spoilers.
I struggled with this book at first. The beginning was confusing and the author dolled out information one grain at a time. I was extremely frustrated and considered quitting the book more than once. But I forced myself to continue and I wasn't disappointed. I would have given this 5 stars except for my frustrations with the beginning.

This is a paranormal action-adventure with a little bit of romance where the superpowers are control of the earth, sky (wind and water), or fire. These people are called Weather Warden. The book is fast paced and pretty well written, though I get the impression that Rachel Caine must have been a meteorology student in her former career - the descriptions of how the heroine (Joanne Baldwin) uses weather to fight are very detailed. I gave up trying to follow all the changes in barometric pressure

So I finally got around to picking up my first Rachel Caine book. I have to say I really like the cover design and artwork on this series. Simple, classy lines accompany the smooth, witching weather artwork making the overall package quite pleasing. I'm looking forward to how they'll look all lined up nicely on my shelf.

I breezed through this one (pun absolutely intended!).
It was fun, creepy, kinda hot in places, and thoroughly absorbing.
For me, well-written dialogue is one of the most important aspects of a book and Caine does not disappoint. There's a lot of snappy, sarcastic banter and it definitely works.
The characters, too, are compelling and believable. Joanna, our
protagonist, is smart, vulnerable, powerful (she can make a life-threatening hurricane go bye-bye, folks!) and funny More...

Took me a little while to really get into it (partly because the story was in first person, but the narrator wasn't telling things she knew--comes off as a bit "coy" on the part of the author, in my opinion), but I liked the story and the way it was resolved. The "romance" verged on explicitness in a couple of places, by the way, and she was a little more obsessed that way than I could really relate to. Interesting world and magic system. Makes me wonder if she mentions so

This was a fun and somewhat frenetic read! The heroine, Joanne Baldwin, is a weather wizard of a sort, and after a terrible experience, is on the run from the Weather Wardens she works for. She finds a number of enemies and allies along the way, and it soon becomes difficult to tell which is which. On top of being a lot of fun to read, the book set the stage well for future books (which I'll definitely be reading). Did anyone else notice that the heroine is named Joanne and loves old cars, m

At first I thought this book was going to be just some cheesy sci-fi/fantasy book that would be usefull to pass the hours while I'm at work, but it actually turned out to be really interesting. The plots twists were entertaining, and even though I knew how the book was going to end (I read the preview for the second book) I was still greatly intrigued by how everything developed. While this was no where near the greatest book I've read this summer, it was still a lot of fun and I plan on reading

I really wish you could do half stars because I'm stuck between 3 and 4. I had some issues that keep it from being a 4 but loved it enough to not want it to be a 3. Seriously Goodreads...1/2 stars.
So what did I love. The concept. The idea of weather wardens is fantastic. At least I know who to blame for our -40˚C winters but thanks for those Chinook breaks! And the Djinns...these are no singing blue genies who sound a lot like Robin Williams. I like Joanne (popular UF heroine name) who's a litt More...

How to Write a Novel that Kriz1818 Will Dislike. Intensely.
Seat belts, please.
If there's one thing I don't like, it's a clue-resistant protagonist. If there's another thing I don't like, it's a protagonist whose identity is defined by (a) an unusual thing that she likes (in this case, hot rods), (b) an ordinary thing that she likes (in this case, clothes), and (c) her sex life.

I've been wanting to read Ill Wind for a while, after reading a teaser chapter a long time ago. Finally, I got it off the shelf and read it over the span of three days. I really enjoyed the book. The voice of the main character was really fun. Jo is a Weather Warden, basically a wizard of sorts, who manipulates the weather, making sure it doesn't get out of hand. She belongs to an organization with other Wardens who keep Mother Nature from killing lots of people and destroying property all over

Joanne is a Weather Warden who is on the run from the World Warden Council because of accusations of corruption and murder. The only person who can help her is another former colleague, Lewis, the most powerful Warden ever. After he had almost been given some kind of magical lobotomy, he stole 3 powerful Djinns and went into hiding. So Joanne starts a wild roadtrip through half of the US to find him, being chased by a mysterious super-powerful enemy who wants to kill her and her More...

There was plenty to like about Ill Wind -- the weather control & djinn based magic system was interesting, the chase/attack action moved at a fast clip, the meteorology was accurate but still accessible, and there were a few twists that I wasn't expecting. However, a few irritants kept the novel to a 2.5 star level for me personally. I don't have much patience for romance novel tropes, particularly when they don't quite make sense for the story (i.e., you're running for your life, and you stop f

At last, after wading through stories of vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, and all other mythical creatures there are, "Ill Wind" comes along as a breath of fresh air. The characters in the books are Nature-wielders (my own-term), meaning they control certain elements of Nature: fire, earth, water. They are bunch of mortals with extra dollop of magic.
I like how Ms. Caine managed to combine magic and science in this book. Science explained the hows of the magic. More...

I liked Ill Wind, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Frankly, I struggled between giving this book a 3 or 4 star rating as it was good, but there were definite flaws. The 4 star rating was mostly won by the unique concept of the weather wardens which I think was not only refreshing, but well fleshed out and believable. The protagonist was likeable and I enjoyed reading the book from her perspective. I also liked the love interest although I will admit I would have preferred

This book has won the dubious honor of making it onto my very short list of books I have started reading and not finished.
It begins in medias res, with plenty of hints at supposedly exciting things that happened before the book began. It flashes back to them at seemingly random points through the book, and when it does, the action is pretty underwhelming when you consider how long the reader had to wait for it.

Wow… I like this book. First I like the Warden idea, and then I like the Djinn even better. So I couldn't be more thrilled with the idea of Joanne being one [NOTE: Never even once I see that coming, and it's a damn good ending]. Not to mention her snow white appearance. Haha. She is a girl with power, wit, and rebellious side; however she also value the one she loved, even after they betray her. And I guessed, she just couldn't help to trust them again (at least for their sake). David is someone

There are rules and repercussions if the weather is changed. This is where the weather wardens come in. They are humans with an affinity for air, water, fire or earth. It usually tak More...

I was attracted to reading Ill Wind, the first instalment in Caines Weather Warden book series, after reading and thoroughly enjoying the best-selling Morganville Vampire series, also written by Caine. I have to admit that I was quite apprehensive before starting reading Ill Wind, as I feared it wouldn’t match the work of Morganville or that it'd be too predictable. However, after completing the book I can say with great relief and honesty that I was definitely pleasantly surprised!

I really like Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampire series so I thought I would check out her Weather Warden series. Let me just say that it is even better than the Morganville Vampire series!

Joanne's character is fun and sassy. She loves "real" cars and isn't afraid to dress sexy and be proud of it. She has a kick butt and take names attitude, and has the power to back that attitude up.There were several times in the book where she could have just taken the easy way out. However, she chose not to because doing so would have put innocent people at risk. Any time it came to a choice between the safety of others and her own, she always put her own safety second. This is such
