this is a fictionalized version of a letter to the king of spain, written by a spanish man who spent eight naked and sunburnt walking across what would later be the southwestern US after getting lost on a conquistador mission. he is understood to be a powerful medicine man and it turns out he starts to think he was a legitimate healer (that stuff is more or less true, at least in terms of self and other-perception, per historical record). but this is a fantastic novel that turns his "true ...more
