Beneath A Southern Sky had an interesting and emotional plot. As a reader I tend to have a habit of immersing myself in the characters and placing myself in their shoes. In this case it was a very hard place to be. I struggled to read Beneath A Southern Sky because I just could not relate at all to the character’s mindset. I not only disagreed with many of her choices and responses in this book, but felt downright angry at Daria Camfield/Hunter. I felt that she was a character who didn’t really...more
"Beneath a Southern Sky"(2001) by Deborah Raney really captured my attention and wrenched my heart. I couldn't rest until I knew what would happen and that everything would be alright. I literally cried through about 1/3 of this book. Sometimes in agonizing sorrow, sometimes in sheer happiness.
I thought about it all day while I was at work, read through my lunch hour and hunched over it late at night until I was finished. This is a story of disobedience, redemption, heartache and true love.

This is one of those books I could easily read again and again. Daria Camfield finds herself alone and widowed on the mission field in South America, where her husband has been reportedly killed in a fire after missing for several days. Though his body is never found, Daria trys to accept her loss. She is forced to fly back home to the States with the only part of her husband she has left- the growing baby in her womb. Attempting to heal from her broken heart, Daria slowly begins to learn how to...more
Daria is very much in love with her husband, Nate. They are both Christian missionaries in South America when he disappears and is assumed dead. She heads back to the United States certain she is carrying Nate's child. After giving birth, she gets a job in a veterinarian's office and falls in love with her new boss. A little voice in the back of her mind tells her to wait but ignoring it she accepts his proposal and gets married. Unknown to Daria, Nate didn't die. He was very sick and held priso...more

I received this book as part of a blog tour (that actually features another book, which will be reviewed later in the week). I hadn't heard of Deborah Raney before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Long story short: I'll be looking to read more of Raney's books, because this one was GOOD.
I like how this is a Christian book, but it's not preachy. The references to God and the praying in the book felt natural - they fit with when I'd find such things in my own life. I like the natural Christianit...more

This is my first time reading this author and actually I picked this book up and a few others at a christian bookstore because it was on sale, but don't let the price fool you. It was a great book. It was so good I could barely put it down. The dynamics of the story is something like this: Daria is happily married to Nathan. God calls them on assignment to do missionary work in a far away place and Nathan "dies" while they are there. Daria returns back home to Kansas City where she meets a hands...more
Lot of things to think about with this story. I didn't think so at first. It seemed like it was only a sad tale of a slightly spoiled Daria. Then I read it a second time and saw all of the lessons in the book. Besides the big lesson of listening to God and seeking His will in all things, there are discussions of child rearing, not telling the truth, working out issues and many more. This book will stick with me.

I mostly liked this book; the Christian element in it was not annoying like it can be in certain novels. I really enjoyed the first half or so, but then it started dragging with too many mundane details before it got to the big dramatic climax. And the climax....too melodramatic for me. Too much weeping and restating of the problem, everybody freaking out. I mean, it is a big deal, but you've had the whole book to think about it and see it coming since it's completely given away in the synopsis....more
For those who follow my reviews or know me personally, you know that I am not a big fan of romance fiction and that I try to be very careful of what novels I do read. So imagine my delight when coming across this jewel in a simple "Value Fiction Blog Tour"!

I received this book for the value fiction blog tour from Waterbrook Multnomah Publishers. The premise of this book sounded very interesting. It seemed like a story that I had never heard before, and that the journey would keep me reading. Unfortunately, this book just wasn't for me. I did my best, gave it my 100 page try, but I couldn't make it through this book.

What a dilemma! I couldn't imagine being in her shoes. To think your husband is dead, to remarry and be pregnant with his child, and then to find out your first husband was alive all that time!? That's just crazy. The only reason I have issue with this book is that they simplified it too much with religion. She made it sound as if pain and heartache aren't the same because you have "jesus" there helping you cope and while I think if you believe he can offer you comfort . . . I just don't think t...more
Heartbroken and pregnant, Daria, a newly widowed missionary to Columbia returns to the US. Over a year later she dates and later marries Cole, and shortly thereafter conceives another child. All seems right with world, until one day she gets a telegram telling her that Nate, her first husband was found alive, and is flying home soon.

E-library audiobook download to my Sansa Clip. Book 1. A story of love, loss, complications of everyday life and missionary work. The clear message of discerning God's call and the mess we get ourselves into when we ignore His message. Poor Daria who is 'alone in a labyrinth of impossible choices.' This book is like reading a soap opera. So much drama. But.... I was right there! Listening along and holding my breath to see what would happen next! ;-)

This was my first book by this author and I will definitely be enjoying more of her books.
I like stories like this, where you can invest in characters that you care about, and with them, face challenges that require growth and choices. This book certainly had all of that, with an inescapable conflict so challenging, so heart-wrenching and so unsolvable in a way that would be right and fair to all involved, that you cannot imagine how the author will work herself and her characters out of the dil...more

After reading Tamera Alexander's, A Lasting Impression, I was browsing her blog and found a list of "Books I wish I could erase from memory and read again for the first time (since I loved them so much)," and on that list was Deborah Raney's, Beneath a Southern Sky. Since Tamera is one of my favorite authors, and I trust her book recommendations, I decided to pick this one up for my Kindle -- and I'm so glad that I did!

I loved this book. Deborah Raney is a gifted writer and brings such raw emotion to her characters they almost feel real. The book offers rich detail but does a good job keeping the mundane details at bay so the reader doesn’t get bored. I was so emotionally connected to Daria, Cole and Nate that I couldn’t decide a proper outcome for them. Most of the story is told through Daria’s perspective but elegantly flows to Nate and Cole when needed. The shifting perspectives brought necessary depth to c...more
I wasn't particularly impressed with the first half of the book -- seemed like the usual Christian romance but eventually the plot got complicated and challenging, making me eager to see how they were going to resolve the difficult situation. By the end of the book it had evolved into a moving story of sacrifice and redemption, with a challenge to trust seek God and seek His guidance throughout all our lives. I would have given it 4 stars if it hadn't taken so far into the story before it got in...more
I wasn't truly taken with the writing style and found many things distracting to the story. I also didn't enjoy the multiple view points. But having said all that, the story was very captivating and kept me up into the wee hours of the night to find out what would happen. Even though what happened is exactly what I expected it was also what I wanted, and therefore satisfying.
Once I figured out what was going to happen concerning Daria and her marriage to Cole, I was anxious to read (in my case hear as it was an audio book) how she was going to make it all work out. I think she did a great job. Strange, unique predicament and yet she smoothly carried out all the characters' emotions, actions, etc.
If you enjoy Christian fiction, then this one is a must-read. It's rare for me to find a book that I enjoy as much as I did this one. Full review is here. http://eagleswingsbooks.blogspot.com/...
So I'm finally really reading this book. I read a chapter or two last year, but then put some other things in front of it. I'm about four chapters into it, and it's okay. The story is good; the writing is sufficient. The author seems to do more telling than showing. I'm not a big fan of "She felt this way or that way" methods of story-telling. Still, it's a sweet Christian love story, and I'll likely pass this along to a friend when I'm finished.
