I didn't enjoy this quite as much as its predecessor, Three Men In A Boat, and that's probably because it takes place (and was written) ten years later. Montmorency is nowhere to be found (presumably having bit the doggy dust), and J. and Harris are both married with children, while George is well into creepy-old-man drunken bachelorhood. Their motivation for undertaking this particular bummel (a bicycle trip through Germany, "Bummel" being German for ramble or stroll) is not "j...more

This was, for the most part, a witty and hilarious light read. I haven't read anything as funny for some time. It was full of stereotypes of the British, the Germans, the Americans, the French, and anybody else they could think of, but it was all in good fun.

The last two chapters were more serious, and oddly prescient given that World War I broke out little more than a decade after it was written.

Not quite as brilliantly funny from start to end as Three Men in a Boat, but still very, very funny. And with a little throwaway bit at the end when the narrator talks about his impressions of the German people that gave me chills in hindsight.

I used to be an "overhauler" till I read this book, Now I laugh at them. wonderfully funny. And it goes to prove that internet hypochondriacs existed long before the internet. Handmaids elbow indeed

Having toured extensively by tandem I can only concur with all comments about what it is like to ride in close proximity for days through the country side this way, on a bummel. I cannot swear to what prewar Germany was like but Mr. Jerome tells all the details with the quirks of a British tourist in a foreign land. They struggle with wayward bikes, aching rear ends, and the German character in 1900.
This book is told with a delightful look at the travails of cyclotouring amid short discursi...more

Well one can only have one masterpiece. This comes close to the level of "Three Men in a Boat" but slightly misses the mark. Still enjoyable, still funny. I heartily recommend it.

Although less popular than Three Men on a Boat (which is known to at least 40 people), Bummel is much much better. More compact and less rambling, it actually seemed more like a travelogue instead of a stream of consciousness rendering of Jerome Jerome's mind. Portions were laugh-out-loud funny, and the slow bits were fewer and further between than Boat. Gun to my head, if I had to recommend one to read to say you've read it, go for Boat... but if I had to recommend one to read because it's more...more

Good, but not as good as the first; Three men in a Boat. Funny but disjointed and not as funny as its predecessor. Some interesting comments on the German people

"Your German likes his view from the summit of a hill, but he likes to find there a stone tablet telling him what to look at. If in addition, he can find a police notice posted on a tree, forbidding him to do something or other, that gives him an extra sense of comfort and security." pages 92-93.

Not as successful as Three Men in a Boat, in my opinion, yet it's still Jerome -- and that's saying a lot. If you like your nonsense "straight up," then this may not be to your liking; but if you enjoy twists, turns, and random diversions (going nowhere in particular) for the sheer fun of it, he's your man.

It was interesting to read an Englishman's positive descriptions of Germany not long before World War I. Much of the book consists of national stereotypes, so beware.

Jerome indulges in endless digression to comic effect. I haven't read anyone else with his style of humor, so I gave this a high rating.

George, Harris and J decide on a cycle tour of Germany. The early chapters discuss their family life with scant regard to their wives, the later chapters describe their travels. Rambling with a bit of humour now and again, quite good to read aloud.

Hilarious.
Especially loved the episode when they are packing for the trip.
Buat yang bahasa Inggrisnya masih menengah, kata-katanya juga nggak bakal terlalu susah untuk menghambat proses ketawa kita.

Quite as funny as the first one. I read it while living abroad, and it has so much to laugh at from the view of a foreigner visiting other places!

it is a good book, not quite as good as three men on a boat, but still a worthy sequel; if only for the story where Harris loses his wife in Holland!
