Pursued by Gloria, a proud and sophisticated prostitute bent on curbing his wandering instincts, Pedro Juan is holed up in his crumbling Havana apartment—painting, beset by a growing sense of melancholy as he observes the lives of the hustlers, hipsters, and hookers in the city below. An invitation to Sweden—cold, unwelcoming, the antithesis of Pedro Juan's Cuba—gives him ...more

"Rakovu obratnicu" nisam citala, Bukovskog jesam davno, i slicnost svakako postoji.

I read Dirty Havan and persevered with it thru the sub-porn to see if there was a writer lurking there underneath the trashy sensationalism.
I subsequently read The Insatiable Spiderwoman (which is considerably better and does indeed contain some decent writing)
This is a return to the trashy Havana sensationalism of Dirty Havana and is without any saving grace. The same strands are continued with an excursion to Sweden w Pedro Juan as an etranger.
I really am not sure why Gutierrez keeps up this t

I really enjoyed Gutiérrez’s Dirty Havana Trilogy, so I persevered with this to the end. The Havana Trilogy is raw and evocative, bringing the reality of the special period and its enervating psychological effect powerfully to life (or seeming to, I have no way of telling how accurate). Tropical Animal is like a crude facsimile of this. The same protagonist, themes and same semi-structure of a disjointed series of events with no real plot, but with the machismo and amateur pornography turned up ...more

I bought Animal Tropical at a book fair in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba for 15 Cuban pesos, a paperback edition, printed and published in Cuba on cheap paper that evokes the privations of a Havana solar. If I hadn't met a Cuban man a few days earlier in Centro Habana who spoke with the same vulgarity as the protagonist in the book, I might have thought such a character couldn't exist. The sex is repetitious and it took me quite a while to finish the book, but it does capture the visceral sensations of ...more

I'm-a be honest with this one. It's a bit filthy. Basically it's 300 pages of sex. Then there's some drinking. Some drugs. And then sex, sex and sex. It's basically the spanish version of 50 Shades of Grey... or Cincuenta sombras de Grey if you will.

So overall, I might NOT recommend this as a gift for mom or grandma for Christmas. But hey, if you don't mind a little friskiness in your life and page after page of sex, get on after it! I certainly won't judge you. Though I secretly enjoyed the lo

Gravei o bolero.

Tropical Animal left me exactly the same taste that Dirty Havana Trilogy left me when I read it in the past. Here as well hero of the book is Pedro Juan, an easily identified alter ego of the writer himself. Do not expect something deep, do not expect meanings, actually expect nothing and just read it. In this one Gutierrez focuses in comparing the portrait of two different type of women, a Cuban and a Swedish. And sex, sex and sex. I can understand people who find nothing special in this book a ...more

This book just takes you places and gives you a feeling like you are in a very hot, humid and luminescent room. Of course it has a lot of sexuality, but it so not about that. For me fiction has to be able to remove you from your reality; only a good book is able to immerse you into a different world and this reading did just that. It is not for bigots and puritans simply because this is real life screaming out at you.

Expecting more brilliance since reading Dirty Havana Trilogy, I felt disappointed by the lack of interest shown in Sweden, though much of the story is set there. I felt the sex scenes, and there were many, bordering on vulgarity rather than the raw and primal urges portrayed in the former. But this is Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, and he always surprises. He allows a glimpse into a softer side, although it really is only a glimpse and the Tropical Animal is dominant.

I can't argue that the author isn't talented - the actual writing is quite good - but I found the story, or lack of one, annoying. I managed to read to about chapter 10, waiting for something to happen, but nothing really did. Was disappointed that I couldn't finish it as from the blurb on the back, it did look quite good.

What a filthy man. If you are looking for some good smut, this is far above those Fifty Shades books. Definitely in the Charles Bukowski school of writing. I really enjoyed reading it on my recent tropical holiday.

Y ayuda. Me concentro mas.

my translation:
Later I paint a little bit. There's tranquility and silence in these days and I benefit from being able to concentrate. Loneliness. Maybe one writes and paints not only to create a space of freedom, but rather also to feel accompanied. Not exactly to break loneliness. It's not about that. Loneliness is always there. I feel it. I touch it. I talk with it. It forms part of my life. Loneliness is inevitable. And it helps. I concentrate more. I'm more me when we live pushed together: loneliness and me. We worship each other. I couldn't live with out loneliness.”
