I can't believe I haven't thought of adding this book to my shelves. This is my all-time favorite book from my childhood--middle years, that is. I remember reading it in an afternoon, cuddled up in a corner by my grandfather's stereo when my family stopped by for a visit. I felt as though I had met a soul mate. I grew up in a part of Salt Lake City where we had a gully and a river that went through our back yard. I used to spend hours down there building forts with my brother, or just traips...more

I read this book in the 5th grade with the T.A.G. reading group (while the rest of hte class read something else, I don't know what, I was in TAG, remember?) Anyway, we all had to make some kind of food from the book and I made onion soup and Claire Rachelson made TURTLE SOUP. It came from a can at the publix so i don't know how real those turtles might be, but still.

I loved the book so much that my dad and brother, who was 7 at the time, started reading a chapter a night before bed, and I'...more

In the novel "My Side of the Mountain," the main character Sam Gribley lives in New York in a small apartment with his huge family. To escape all of it, he takes a cab to the Catskill Mountains and hikes deep into the wilderness to live alone off the land. With only an axe, the clothes off his back, and a few other supplies, he builds a home in a tree, tames a bird, and learns to hunt and survive on his own.
The author uses very descriptive wording and sensory details to explain...more

I have fond (though faint) memories of my all-time favorite teacher reading this to us in third grade, so I checked it out of the library to read to my son. It's often hard to tell when he's into something, because his mode of listening usually includes staring at a video game manual or another book. I knew this book about a young boy who runs away to survive by his wits -- gathering edible plants, building a shelter, trapping, and hunting with the aid of a trained falcon -- a year alone on his ...more

This 1959 Newberry honor book is the story of Sam Gribley, a young teenager who runs away from his NYC home to his family's abandoned property in the wilderness of the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York.

A great amount of detail is put into the description of the flora and fauna and the character's easy production of a comfortable life is a little difficult to believe.

And though I found it a nice enough story, I would have a hard time sharing it with young people as I fear they'd ha...more

I read this book long ago and I was so thrilled to find it again. I also bought the next two books and had a great time reading them. Within the last few years I have been trying to think of books I have read that my children would like to read too. What great memories this brings up. My elementy teacher read a chapter or two each day or so and I hated the clif-hanger that each day brought.

I love lists. And there are plenty of lists in this book. There is the list of essential gear that Sam takes with him when he runs away to his grandfather's old property. There are lists of everything that he uses in the wilderness. It is a wonderful book full of nature. All about one boy's adventure living in the great outdoors.

This was a favorite book from my childhood. It is not the best written book, but it made me want to run away and live in the woods. My students really enjoy it, too. The ending is something we spend a lot of time discussing. The kids really feel strongly about loving or hating it.

I had read the first book when I was in elementary school. It was very enjoyable to re-read it and then to continue the story. I appreciate how the author dealt with the need for everyone (even the hero) to obey the law, and the issue of returning wild animals to the wild.

Loved this book! Read it in second grade. I wanted to recreate the whole thing (I did lash together a very tiny bed). I wanted to live in this book. Until now I didn't realize it was a trilogy. I will have to search out the other two. Great for girls or boys.

These books have a magic that caught me in childhood and still holds strong today. I would recommend this to any one, of any age, who ever dreams of independance, freedom, solitude or nature. A perfect blend of information and fantasy, beautifully written.

One of my favorite books growing up, this is the collection of the trilogy. Don't read the third one, it's written from a bird's point of view, but the first two make you want to run off to live in a hollowed out tree in the woods.

Probably the most influential book I read as a kid. It awakened my life-long infatuation with mountains, and (for better or worse) a fascination with 'running away from it all' that continues even today.

For some awful reason, the Jr. High has this listed as a "boys' book" -- tell my sister that, who's copy from childhood had notes all over the margins, preparing for her great escape to the Catskills.

This was my favorite book as a child (My Side of the Mountain), and after recently rereading it, I understand why. I've read the first two in the Trilogy, and the third is on my list to read :)

I read this as a teenager and was fascinated with the idea of living alone in a hollow tree eating flat "bread" made from crushed nuts. I wanted to try it myself, but never did.

This is a really great trilogy. I especially like the 3rd book (Frightful's Mountain) because it is from the falcon's perspective. Jean Craighead George is an excellent writer.
