After a violent civil war, and the devastation wrought by the now-fallen Darth Caedus, the Galactic Alliance is in crisis -- and in need. From all corners, politicians, power brokers, and military leaders converge on Coruscant for a crucial summit to restore order, negotiate differences, and determine the future of their unified worlds. But even more critical, and far more...more

Ahh, the Star Wars Galaxy: truly a marvelous place. There are awesome planets and strange aliens, cool starships and weapons, Jedi and their lightsabers (accompanied, most likely, by millions of Holonet vids of fat boys playing with broom handles), and most importantly, hot Twi’Lek chicks. Unfortunately, there’s also war. Lots of war. Lots and lots of war, and very little peace. In the forty-odd years (Expanded Universe time) since our favorite rebels destroyed the second Death Star, we’ve ...more

I was really looking forward to Outcast. I've been looking forward to it more than any other Star Wars event of the year. I have been dying to find out what kind of series would follow the epic story of wishy-washy Sith Lord, Darth Caedus. At first glance I will say that elements of this series are reminding me of Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix and Daala it's Professor Umbridge. But instead of the Order of the Phoenix we have, Darkmeld. This portion, plot 1, the Jedi madness/Jailbreak...more

This book is the beginning of a new series of Star Wars books set 43 years after Episode IV: A New Hope (the original 1977 movie). It starts off slow, with the intergalactic government known as the Galactic Alliance forcing Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker into exile. Blaming Luke for failing to prevent Jacen Solo's slide into the dark side and into the role of Darth Caedus before his death in the last Star Wars series. Unlike the starting book in the previous series, there are no large, set pie...more

This was really enjoyable. You could tell they were also trying to use it as a book anyone who hadn't read NJO or Legacy of the Force could jump into, but it wasn't annoying for those who had; they added in details you needed to know from past books but didn't summarize. I can't wait to see what happens next; what's infecting/ailing the Jedi to make them think everyone's 'Not-insertnamehere.' :) It will also be interesting to see where the next place Ben and Luke go to and what they learn.

Now, ...more

The Fate of the Jedi series takes place two years after the chaos and destruction caused by Darth Caedus. Chief of State Natasi Daala brings charges against Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker amounting to him failing to recognize one of his Jedi Knights was turning to the Dark Side. If Luke could have prevented the turn, then the Second Galactic Civil War could have been prevented. Within a few days, Luke Skywalker is exiled from the New Jedi Order and the Galactic Alliance for ten years, and subs...more

I listened to this as an audio book. This is a story of Luke Skywalker and this Jedi about 40 years after Return of the Jedi. The Galactic Alliance has decided that Luke is a bit of a criminal so begins a political struggle between the GA government and the Jedi Order.

I must say that I really wanted to like this more than I did. This was the first Star Wars novel that I have ever read (or listened to) and, even though I did not like this one too much, I see the potential entertainmen...more

This book picks up a couple of years after the last series, «Legacy of the Force», and works the consequences of that story arc: the new galactic civil war made the government (and the overall public) suspicious of the Jedi — a powerful group that acts and sees itself as above the law.

The idea behind this book (which opens the present series, «Fate of the Jedi») is that the Jedi need to face responsibility for its acts: they can no longer expect to brawl along a speeding lane, crashi...more

If you'll allow me an analogy, I watched the first two seasons of the TV show "24" and enjoyed them quite a bit. But after the second season, I started thinking, "You know, it's starting to get a little tiresome that this incredibly bad stuff keeps happening to Jack Bauer. I'm all for willful suspension of disbelief, but this is getting ridiculous." Now, I've read about every novel written in the Star Wars universe. About three chapters into this book, the latest, I got that ...more

I know a lot of people have been really down on the recent gloomy and depressing storylines in the recetn Star Wars EU, but I personally have enjoyed them immensely. The "Legacy of the Force" storylines were working within an inherently silly premise (Galaxy At War!!), but took the subject seriously enough and wrung some good philosophical debates out of the characters' struggles, showed off some epic military strategy, and even did some impressive world-building (I still thank heavens...more

I liked this book. When I read it, it had been quite a while since I had picked up any of the Star Wars books set in the later years, post New Jedi Order. The New Jedi Order books just took an off-ramp that I wasn't pleased with, so they lost me for a while. I still picked up a few of the new stories set in the early days (post Jedi) or before Phantom Menace, though, so when I saw this on the shelf and read the premise, I thought I'd give it a try. It was really nice to get back in the saddle wi...more

The start of a new series after the Jacen goes dark books. I didn't like some of the premises in the book (Daala as head of state just is nonsensical; how about someone related to the former Rebels?) The plot itself was well done and interesting. We have three main plots in the book. 1) Luke and Ben are searching for what led Jacen astray to the dark side and start their search on Doran (home of Clone Wars Era Jedi Plo Koon of the Kel Dor) with the Baran Do Sages. 2) Jaina and her coterie of...more

Just what I needed another 9 volume Star Wars series called Fate of the Jedi. Aaron Allston starts this series with premise that these are indeed disturbing times. Fate of the Jedi picks up shortly after the conclusion of the last Star Wars series called Legacy of the Force, which I have written about.

So far, the premise of this series seems to be the Jedi have worn out their welcome in the galaxy with Luke Skywalker taking the full brunt of the blame for how others perceive the Jedi...more

I've been a fan of Aaron Allston since the X-wing series, and while I enjoyed those more, Outcast is a solid beginning to this new story arc. The only depressing, or inspiring thing, depending on how you look at it, is that Luke, Han, and Leia should be collecting Social Security at their ages, but still they find a way to save the day. If I have any complaint, its not with the author, but with the Star Wars series of late, with characters changing so much and/or dying, that it becomes grim re...more

Star Wars needs some new writers.

Aaraon Allston and Troy Denning used to be the hot new thing in the Star Wars Universe. Now they spend their time searching through old Star Wars books for obscure references to things that that can be twisted into some kind of mangled idea of a plot, stick it to some half-baked story with chewing gum and then take turns writing nine book series about a bunch of characters acting uncharacteristically stupid so that the story can follow its prescribed ...more

Being a follow-up to the Legacy of the Force series, this book already has one strike against it in the ridiculousness that is Galactic Alliance Chief of State Natasi Daala. Strike two is the beyond-contrived case of Luke Skywalker's exile. But apart from that, Allston delivers a fast-moving and fairly fun story. Okay, so the Han & Leia side-plot seems pretty irrelevant (barring one minor scene) and wouldn't you know it, Allston manages to shoehorn Wedge Antilles into yet another story. And, yea...more

Fails to capture the imagination despite an interesting premise. I was hoping this new arc in the Star Wars universe would take us away from the politics and pointless storylines but I was disappointed. There is very little character development here and everything feels rushed. It's just setup with no execution.

As is, I have no intentions of reading the next story in the series unless the reviews are incredible.

Pros:
-The new series following The Legacy of the Force...more

Let me preface this by saying that originally Jacen Solo was my favorite character in the entire series, and his demise was unfortunate. I loved the dark path he went down and hoped that he could have continued, but alas his time was cut short. In spite of his death I love the starwars universe and gave this next round a shot. This book read like a fantastic set up in the new series. It didn't have a ton of action or excitement but it laid the groundwork for a fantastic new journey. This book se...more

Years ago I, like so many Star Wars fans, grew tired of the New Jedi Order books. They lacked the fun and adventure that made Star Wars so special. They were so bleak and depressing that I stopped reading the Legacy Era completely. Luke, Leia, Han and the characters I'd loved ever since my sister and brother-in-law took my niece and I to the movies way back in 1977 had grown stale and uninteresting.

So it was with some mild trepidation that I tried Outcast.

This book just ...more

Once again, Marc Thompson does fantastic voice work in this exciting Star Wars saga tale. A lot has happened with Luke, Leia, Han, and the rest after "The Return of the Jedi" and this book fills in the story for newcomers to Star Wars novelization universe. It's an exciting tale of power, justice, and redemption in a galaxy far far away. Normally, I might not have picked up a Star Wars novelization for fear of being overwhelmed by the universe, but Marc Thompson's voice work made me st...more

A complete waste of time and money. Luke continues to be an ineffectual douche bag, a granola hippie who refuses to *do* anything other than let the world throw him around like a grocery bag in a Sam Mendes movie. Characterization is made on the fly, despite decades worth of continuity. And, most egregious of all, there's a court scene ... a court room scene in a Star Wars book where Luke allows himself to get thrown out of the Jedi Order for ten years.

I could go on ranting about ...more

Star Wars has always been one of my favorite movies of all time, and throughout the years I have read a few books here and there, but haven't really kept up with the novels straight through. I picked up this series, trying to get myself back into them..and I have to say, this book has pulled me back into wanting to read them.

A few things kinda threw me off with the writing of this book, like ways of the author showing feelings and ways he worded what the characters would say. Not say...more

Outcast begins two years after the events of Invincible, the last Legacy of the Force book which left the galaxy far, far away in the capable hands of Admiral Natasi Daala. Or something like that. The war is over and the universe is divided into three parts: the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances--overseen by Chief of State Daala--the Galactic Empire (Imperial Remnant), and the Confederation states--those planets unwilling to rejoin the Alliance. The Unification Summit has been called togeth...more

I actually had a hard time getting into this one, and I blame fanfic. I am completely obsessed with a fic and it has taken over my brain. At least the Star Wars part. So I’m not really sure I’m even qualified to review.

That said, I did enjoy it. I’m long past the days when a Star Wars novel can blow my mind (Though Mindor came close,) but Outcast offers a lot of good things. Namely, Ben and Luke. Ben was the biggest surprise of Legacy of the Force, and his development continues here....more

This was a fairly good read. I like the fact that we're not going into yet another "galactic civil war" in which everything is life or death and tense. The last two series (New Jedi Order and Legacy of the Force) got too big and unwiedly, losing me in its story arc. This is the first of what seems to be another series and it looks like, and hopefully will be, centered around smaller, character-driven stories rather than a huge galaxy-wide conflict. I like how "real-life" cons...more

Star Wars: Outcast is quite disappointing. It reads like a bad TV show. The author does not stay true to any of the character's personalities. The descriptions seem to be the product of Aaron Allston having too much fun playing with the thesaurus. I'd go on but trying to read through some of book again just upsets me further...

"Continuing the saga two years after the events of the second Galactic civil war. Fate of the Jedi's aim is focused on the consequences of actions taken of those involved in the conflict. Jacen Solo (Darth Caedus) is dead, and the divided Galactic Alliance, now under the leadership of Chief of State Natasi Daala is slowly coming together inviting back the systems of the Confederates and even the Imperial Remnant (now under the leadership of Jagged Fel). But the unification of the 3 parties ...more

Not a bad start to a new series. Allston is one of the better writers of the expanded universe and seems to be able to manage campy dialogue without it being too....well, campy. There's a lot of wry humor in some of the pairings for the simultaneously unfolding subplots that produce some witty banter in the usual enjoyable Star Wars vein, if you're into that sort of thing (and I most definitely am). There's nothing entirely complex about this novel and in general, the mysteries in even the longe...more

I'm not finished yet but I'm giving this, based on what I've read and already know about the book (I've read the whole spoiler story arc), I'm giving this one four stars. Finally Douche Skywalker gets what's coming to him for not taking out Jacen Solo when he had the chance, and allowing him to fall to the Dark Side to begin with. I hope Luke gets bitchslapped in this book the way he deserves. Can you tell that I dislike Luke? And who else thinks its time for a clone of Chewbacca?
