Harlan "Cowboy" Jones is the 4th SEAL to get his story told in Suzanne Brockmann's Tall Dark and Dangerous series. And while as a whole I am loving these well written, addictive stories and their delicious alpha male heroes this one was a letdown. It starts out with a ton of potential; exciting action, suspense, a decent heroine and a larger then life Navy SEAL hero coming to her rescue. Unfortunately Brockmann then pulls out the secret baby card and for the last 3/4's of the book I couldn't stand the heroine, lack of storyline or the ongoing (and going) conflict between them. Luckily we get some great supporting characters and lots of interaction with the rest of Alpha Team 10 to carry us through.

When the American embassy Melody Evans is working in is overtaken by terrorists it doesn't take long for the Navy SEALs to come to their rescue however it does take them 2 days to reach the Middle Eastern border and a flight to freedom. During those tense few days Melody comes to trust her daring and charismatic rescuer with her life. Blaming the extreme circumstances on the ensuing week of passion they share together in Paris. However Melody doesn't want a relationship with a hero who risks his life on a daily basis and is never home, she plans on settling down with an everyday, average man. So when Jones gets called back to duty she thanks him for the laughs and breaks things off.

And this is when things fell apart; 7 months later Jones gets reassigned to the east coast and because he hasn't been able to forget about Melody he looks her up. Shocked to discover that she's pregnant but being an honourable guy Cowboy Jones dons his dress whites and asks her to marry him. The only thing is she doesn't want him, in fact she's got everything worked out so that she doesn't need him either and no amount of coercion on his part will change her mind. This storyline goes on and on with Melody not giving an inch and Jones setting up a tent in her backyard then doing normal suburban type things in the hopes that she will at least put his name on the birth certificate. He's kind of like a dog waiting to be thrown a bone and this got old, fast.

One interesting thing about this story is that (except for one) all of the love scenes are spoken of or thought about in past tense. Now I usually like to be in on the action but this really worked here and I found the memories and sexual tension to be just as sexy as if it were taking place. I just don't know what happened to our heroine because she became very unlikable. Even at the very end I didn't ever and get the feeling that this couple loved each other, I just felt that Jones was going to be in for a lifetime of supplication, diaper changing and begging for sexual favours.

So, my least favourite from the series so far, but still a worthwhile quickie romance and I should mention that the entire TD&D series is in the process of being re-released (with fancy new covers) and this one can be found in Tall, Dark and Fearless: Frisco's Kid\Everyday, Average Jones along with the excellent tortured hero in Frisco's Kid (Tall, Dark and Dangerous #3).(less)

Jones is a Navy SEAL and Melody is one of the hostages he rescues. They have a short, intense affair and part. Predictably (because this is romancelandia) she turns out to be pregnant and doesn't tell him. Melody lives with her nurse sister in a lovely old house in a small, pleasant town; she wants to stay there at her job with a local politician and find a normal guy who'll be home every night. But when Jones finds out he fathered a child, he's determined to marry the mother.

Started off great. I really Loved Harlan "Cowboy" Jones. I thought he was a fantastic Hero. However, I really hate the secret baby plot device, and after the initial rescue at the Embassy, the story just up and died. I really disliked the heroine immensely. I thought she was just stupid. Direkt sollen wohl die Funken zwischen den beiden fliegen und sie schilzt dahin als sie ihn zum ersten Mal sieht. Ich meine, hallo? Da herrscht Krieg, die Geiseln sind noch nichtmals befreit und schon fliegen Herzchen durch die Luft? Das gab mir fast den Rest. Dennoch konnte ich mir nicht denken, dass das ganze Buch von dieser Befreiungsaktion handelt und mit dem Gedanken habe ich tapfer durchgehalten und - siehe da - endlich war ein Anflug von menschlichem Verstand in Sicht.

Mit einem Zeitsprung von sieben Monaten rettet - meiner Meinung nach - die Autorin diese sehr unwirkliche Geschichte und zeigt sowohl Cowboy als auch Melody in ihrem wahren Leben, ohne irreparable Anziehungskraf und anderen unwirklichem Zeug. Die beiden habe sich zu der Zeit das letzte Mal vor genau diesen sieben Monaten gesehen und Melody hat nicht vor ihn jemals wieder zu sehen - doch Cowboy bekommt sie einfach nicht aus dem Kopf, schluckt seinen Stolz hinunter und ruft sie an ...

Endlich! Ich hätte fast gelacht vor Erleichterung, denn die Geschichte wurde endlich wirklicher! Und womit die beiden es nun zu tun bekommen, stellt viele andere Probleme in den Schatten. Ich will nicht zuviel verraten, nur so viel:
Melody hat sich in diesen sieben Monaten absolut weiterentwickelt. Sie ist reifer geworden, erwachsener. Außerdem zeigt sich ihr ausgepräkter Sturkopf, der sich nur mit Harlan "Cowboy" Jones messen lässt.
Den Weg den die Geschichte nimmt gefiel mir persönlich dann richtig gut. Es macht den harten, unnahbaren Navy Seal irgendwie "menschlicher" - wobei das wohl nicht das richtige Wort ist. Auch, dass er sich mit seiner eigenen Kindheit konfrontiert sieht, als er auf den kleinen Jungen Andy trifft, beweist wie viel Herz doch in diesem Mann steckt.

So schnell die Funken am Anfang noch flogen, desto schwieriger hat Cowboy es nun, da er Melody wiedersehen will, denn sie absolut nicht begeistert von dieser Idee. Sie versucht ihn abzublocken, zu ignorieren und doch - tief in ihrem Herzen - hat sie eine verdammte schwäche für diesen Mann.

Der extreme Wandel der Geschehnisse hat das Buch für mich gerettet und es wurde zu einem - wieder einmal - einmaligem Leseerlebnis der Navy Seals. Und wieder einmal schafft es die Autorin, Suzanne Brockmann, diese Geschichte ganz eigen auf den Charakter des Navy Seals zu formen, denn keine Geschichte gleicht der vorhergegangenen. Wohlwollend gebe ich diesem Buch 3,5/5 Sternen, denn ich fand sie besser als den Vorgänger (Band drei), jedoch nicht so gut wie Band eins und zwei.(less)

This was different. The book before Frisco's Kid was already different, but this one was different from the different, which doesn't mean it's necessarily bad. I really liked Frisco's Kid and this one started good too, but I have too admit forced some annoying things on me through the course of the story.

Der Schreibstil ist der Autorin gelungen, die Geschichte liest sich flüssig, aber leider nicht mehr so leidenschaftlich, wie ich es aus dem dritten Band kannte. Dazu sind die Charaktere leider auch deutlich schwächer als beim Vorgänger. Besonders Melody konnte mich mit ihrer Art nicht überzeugen. Sie wirkt unglaublich anstrengend, unentschlossen und so manches Mal musste ich über die den Kopf schütteln. Eine Traumfrau, wie sie so euphorisch dargestellt wurde, konnte ich in ihr leider nicht entdecken. Zwar kann ich verstehen, dass die Geiselnahme ihr sehr zugesetzt hat, aber dennoch sollte sie sich etwas anders benehmen. Auch Harlan, der von allen nur "Cowboy" genannt wird, ist nicht unbedingt der größte Sympathieträger. Er wirkt unglaublich naiv, vor allem in Bezug auf Melody. Er kennt sie kaum, sieht aber direkt die Traumfrau in ihr und versucht mit aller Macht in ihr Leben zu treten.

Leider ist die Geschichte sehr vorhersehbar. Eigentlich muss man mit einer gewissen Vorhersehbarkeit bei diesem Genre rechnen, allerdings war es mir bei "Cowboy - Riskanter Einsatz" dann doch zu offensichtlich. Ein paar Irrungen und Wirrungen hätten der Geschichte deutlich mehr gestanden. Aber dennoch: Die Geschichte ist recht solide, trotz seiner Schwächen.
Positiv zu bewerten, ist für mich die Tatsache, dass deutlich weniger Erotikszenen vorkommen, als sonst. Klar, bei so einer Reihe erwartet man derartige Szenen, ich war jedoch froh, dass es dieses Mal anders kam, denn oftmals ist es einfach nichts Neues, da die Szenen nur minimal umgeschrieben werden.

Das Cover gefällt mir wieder einmal gut. Es wirkt sehr sinnlich, allerdings erscheint mir das männliche Model doch etwas zu jung, aber dies ist wie immer Geschmacksache. Die Kurzbeschreibung hat mir ebenfalls gefallen, sie liest sich gut und verrät nicht zu viel.

Insgesamt ist "Cowboy - Riskanter Einsatz" ein solider Band der "Operation Heartbreaker"-Reihe, der jedoch mit dem dritten Band nicht mithalten kann. Dennoch werde ich der Autorin treu bleiben und abwarten, was die nächsten Bände so mit sich bringen. (less)

If I ever need rescuing I hope I get someone like Harlan "Cowboy" Jones. Melody Evans is one lucky lady...I like this book – even if it felt like I could strangle Melody at times for being so stubborn. MAN! I really liked Harlan Jones and Meledy too. I liked this kid next door and of course the other seals.

The romance had some steamy parts and some sweet ones and the story line was good too.

BUT there was a time in the middle i was waiting for some loving! it had so much going for it and i understand that he was giving her time and waiting her out and i think thats great. It just needed a bit more umph.

A little strange, but still a rather entertaining story about a young woman rescued from terrorists who falls immediately in lust with her rescuer. Months pass, he looks her up again only to get the cold shoulder. When he shows up in person to press his case, he discovers a very pregnant young woman. He feels compelled to "do the right thing" and she will have none of his marriage proposals. What's a guy to do?

I discovered this book in the library. I had not heard of Suzanne Brockmann before picking up this novel. After reading this novel, I searched out other novels by Suzanne Brockmann. The research and knowledge of Navy Seals woven into such a wonderful story filled with romance won me over, Suzanne Brockmann is one of my favourite authors and look forward to reading each of her navy seal stories.

I love the amazing men that Ms. Brockmann creates. Cowboy, aside from his talent as a SEAL, is a caring fellow who has a strong desire to never let those he cares about down. Melody has alot of real concerns about a husband and father who is away for weeks, sometimes months on dangerous missions. These are real issues, and I think they're handled very well.

I think I'm the opposite of the woman in the story - an accountant or some other mundane job bores me, and I'm afraid if my husband loved that type of work we may not be compatible. It was fun to read about someone who thinks so differently than me and imagine what her life must be like. I also liked the plot of the foster kid next door.

I almost put this book down half-read because I disliked Melody so much. She was fine in the beginning, but her deciding she knew more about Harlan's feelings than Harlan got to be really, really annoying and repetitive. The only reason I kept going was because because it's part of a series.

Nothing to say more than what's already been said. Melody is stubborn and selfish. And Cowboy turns into a doormat for her to wipe her feet on. Melody's obsession with "normal" was annoying. Most of the book was Cowboy trying his best to do the right thing, to be what she wants and Melody freezing him out at every point for no valid reason. She's got to be one of the worst heroines I've ever read in any romance.

I finished this in one sitting. I picked the book up just before bedtime and ending up staying until early morning.

It's typical, feel-good fluff that I expect from Brockmann's writing style. I like the SEAL hero in this book, and the heroine started out strong for me. I'd give this 3.5 stars. I didn't like it as much as the previous books in the series. I did like the character of Andy and his relationship with Cowboy.
