This is an old book (1947) about historic and/or great houses of 12 Midwestern states. One of the fun things about reading a book so long after it was written is knowing how much has changed. Some of the houses featured that were in private hands are now open to the public. Others no longer exist.

At the time this book was written, the Gates-Wallace-Truman House in Independence, MO was known as the "Summer White House" as it was then the private residence of the President of the US.
