Book Review: 2 Treasure Boxes

Margiere, a dhampir; Leesil, a half-elf; Wynn, a young scholar and Chap, a fay-creature in the form of an intelligent dog continue their adventures, this time tracking down Margiere's past. And a very interesting past it is, the story reveals how Margiere came to be and hints at why she was created.

Barb and J. C. Hendee have written two series in the Saga of the Noble Dead. Sister of the Dead is the third book in the first series. There ar...more

Sister of the Dead begins the morning after Thief of Lives ends. This is a series that absolutely must be read in order or it will make no sense. I am so glad that I am reading the books now instead of when they first came out because a waiting a year between books would have ruined the flow of the story for me.

As I get deeper into this series, I am enjoying it even more. The characters are all complex. They all have their own secrets and moral codes. Each has a past that they w...more

Meh. Not a great book. The action is decent, the characters interesting, but the writing needs work.

Hendee lapses into the same problems that she had in the first book, where she tells rather than shows a lot of the backstory, and has flashbacks at some inappropriate times that mess with the story's flow.

It's an easy read, but not a fast one (because of the flashback mess). If you've gotten far enough in the series to get to this book, and need another cheesy vampire-h...more

Ugh...I was interested in following the story line in order to find out what happens but the reasoning for some of the characters behavior doesn't even sound logical. All the flashbacks and repeating what happened in the previous books are too much. Plus, I absolutely loathe Wynn's character. No matter what I cannot get myself to like her and more and more the main characters are starting to bother me as well. I can't sympathize or empathize if how they behave doesn't make sense to their own cha...more

Hmm... this installment in "The Noble Dead" series was not my favorite. Why? Well, in the journey of every hero/heroine there is a low point, a nadir, that seems so awful that the character must either be crushed by the loss or rise as a phoenix from his/her ashes. Though I have not yet read the other books in the series it had better be the nadir (the bottom of the bottom) for the story. And though I certainly want to feel a sense of reality in my books, I really loathe it when the cr...more

SISTER OF THE DEAD is a great contribution to the Noble Dead series. I think it's really a spotlight for development on the characters and their background. The authors know how to throw twists in the plot to make a reader think and re-think certain aspects of the story. I appreciated the efforts they made and had a blast sifting "discovering" things along with the characters themselves. Old mysterious are resolved while new ones are being created.

I was slightly disappointe...more

I really like the ending of this book. Sometimes these storys get confusing but I eventually figure them out and this one wasn't bad but of course I still have questions and I dont always agree with Magerie's belief that all Noble Dead are bad and evil. It's kind of ironic how when they explain to someone what a Noble dead is that they say they are the highest of the undead but they can learn and change just like someone living but apparently they can't go from being a bad guy to a somewhat good...more

The first two books in the Noble Dead series had an element of mystery and suspense to them. This volume did in the first third of the book, but once that ended, the rest of the book started to feel like a dungeon crawl to me. "Your party travels to get some piece of information. You encounter monsters along the way. Fights occur." Eh.

I decided to move on to something else since the characters alone aren't enough to keep me reading. Magiere needs some personality oth...more

I had a love/hate relationship with the first two Nobel Dead novels; book three tips the balance a little toward hate. In Dhampir and Thief of Lives, the rough beginnings gave way to fast-paced climaxes that kept me turning pages, and the interaction between Magiere and Leesil made up for the sometimes weak characterization and the often weak worldbuilding. Unfortunately, Sister of the Dead just isn't as good as its predecessors.

Magiere's and Leesil's relationship felt flat, and while ...more

Moving along in the tale of Magiere the dhampir, her companion and now lover Leesil the half-elf, their fay-in-flesh-form Chap and now the addition of Wynn the scholar. In this book they seek to find out about Magiere's history.

I really like how this overall story is developed book by book, more and more details emerging as we progress through each one.

Magiere's one-track mind (vampires/other monsters = to be killed, no matter the circumstances surrounding their "...more

Sister of the Dead is a notable improvement over the preceding two books in the Noble Dead series. While the earlier books did a good job of establishing intriguing characters in Magiere and Leesil, they tended to be a bit repetitive and inconsistently paced.
Here, the character development that came before pays off. In Sister of the Dead we learn quite a bit about Magiere and the mysterious Welsteil, and yes, about Chap as well. Leesil plays an integral part in this book, but one senses th...more

This was a solid addition to this series but I felt it dragged a little in certain places. It took too long for them to get where they needed to go. I really like the way the love story between Leesil and Magiere is shaping up. It's not the focus of the novel, but it's easy to see their feelings for each other. The mystery surrounding Magiere's beginnings weren't too surprising, but I'm curious to see how everything is going to play out.

This book series is great! It's a nice mix of fantasy and mystery. Magiere and Leesil's adventures continue. They travel to Magiere's homeland to find out more about her past. Welstiel and Chane track them through Droevinka to make sure Magiere stays on the right path. Magiere discovers the ritual of her birth and that she has some family that she didn't know she had. I'm ready for the next in the series for sure!

Liking it so far, although I wonder about the cover. When did Magiere get huge boobs?
The first chapter has Leesil naked...that sounds promising.
ETA: Finished! This book had so many copy errors...where was the copy editor?
Overall, I liked the book and I will read the next one. Just can't know who actually stays dead in this series.

This book follows Leesil and Magiere on their quest to find their respective histories. Magiere discovers her father and the truth about her conception, while coming to the realization that Welstiel is her brother. We get to see the progression of Leesil and Magiere's relationship as well as discovering that Magiere's dark side is possible to control.

The next book should deal more with Leesil's search for his mother. All the while, Chap is attempting to protect the group from the...more

About half-way through this book I thought I was going to quit reading the series after finishing this third volume. At that point, I was losing interest in the story and it felt as though the authors were running out of ideas to make the story fresh and original. Now that I've finished the book, however, I think I will continue with the series. The characters are likable and I am intrigued enough with what will happen in the next part of the story that I want to read the next book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in this series. With the third, however, the plot drags from the first chapter and never picks up steam. I forced myself to keep going, but it was a tough slog. Unsure whether I will go on to read the next book.

Third in the series about Magiere the Dhampir and her companions Leesil & Chap. In this outing, they go in search of Magiere s past. We learn more about her creation and birth. Decent addition to the series.

I loved this book. It grabbed and I had to read to see what happens next. It answered a lot of my questions but left me with new ones. It's my favorite, so far, of the series.

Book three of the Noble Dead series, this book helps to build upon that which has already begun. At times the book can be a tad frustrating but there is some really good content in this book which enables it to make you want to keep reading the series. Of course, giving only part of the whole story, leaving plenty of things to explore and learn about is the key to that occuring. Don't expect this to end in a great spot, but instead expect to keep reading in the 4th book and beyond.

Pretty good follow-up, certainly deepend the world and the characters. Went a lot darker than other books of the series, removing some of the fun. But I will definitely be reading the next one.

I was eager to pick up where we left Leesil and Magiere and their newly admitted feelings for each other. Unfortunately there was little romance between the two. They seemed like an old married couple. And they were grumpy a lot. Then there was also the addition of another character who joined them on there travels. I wasn't crazy about the idea. Three is usually a crowd and Wynn seemed rather annoying. I did still want to find out more about who Magiere was and why she existed. I was not disapp...more

Somehow with this series, it's not difficult to just sit and read for hours at a time. This being the case, I've gone through these books in just a few days! The story definitely built up even more as you learned more about Magiere's past. More undead creatures are added which made the story more intriguing for me. I even warmed up to Chane and Wynn who are now also major characters. As the characters develop more, I enjoy them even more and it becomes that much more real. Again, this one is a l...more
