A book about Alaska and dogs--two of my favorite things. It was very entertaining. It ALMOST made me want to do the same thing with my dog--then I thought about all the walking . . .
This book was my attempt to learn about Alaska, both the history and nuances of its people, before visiting. This was an unexpectedly good read. For one, it's great travel writing; Rozell's descriptions of his walk along the pipeline are evocative, honest, and often funny. I love how he intersperses the tales of his travel with Alaskan history, and uses the people he meets along the way as springboards to talk about life in the state and how it has changed since the pipeline.

It took me a while to read this, not because it was uninteresting or boring, but because life caught up during the holidays and I just couldn't find the time to read. This book is an account of the authors walk along the Alaskan Pipeline. It was an 800 mile trip that he backpacked and did it entirely with his dog Jane along with the occasional visit from his girlfriend and friends. Along the way Rozell met various people who were very interesting characters. Most lived in Alaska for a reason and...more
This was a good read and I learned a lot about Alaska and the pipeline. I didn't always like his style of writing, but found some chapters and stories particularly good. I feel like I wanted more from it, but I'm not quite sure what. I enjoyed that you always knew Jane was along for the trip, but I do wish we would have heard more of her back story. There were also some large portions of the trip that were glossed over. I would recommend it to anyone living in Alaska or interested in learning mo...more
Ned took his dog Jane for a walk one day - 800 miles the length of the alaskan pipeline. He wrote nature and cultural essays each day and sent them back to be published, and this book is the culmination of the essays, plus a whole lot more. i really enjoyed the read. Not enough jane in the book, though. :)
I enjoyed this book! It was so much more than just the author walking the length of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline with his dog. He was able to easily weave in the stories of the people he met along the way and gradually painted a picture of himself as he revealed personal details. He also managed to touch upon environmental issues and portray the importance of the pipeline to the state of Alaska. It was also fun to recognize places he mentioned such as the Turtle Club in Fox!
I have always felt a call to the north. The best vacation of my life was when we drove to Alaska in 1990. I climbed up onto the Arctic Circle sign and had my picture taken on my birthday.
Ned Rozell did not drive. He hiked the entire length of the Alaska pipeline from Valdez to Prudhoe Bay with his chocolate lab, Jane. I understand why he made the trip and I envy him.
Along the way, he shares his observations and
shares with us stories of meeting people on his trip and his philosophy of life. I...more

At first, I was a bit disappointed by this book, as I was thinking it would be more about him hiking with his dog, but rather I got the history of all the places he visited, and all the people he ran in to. It was almost more of a history book of Alaska disguised as a hiking journal of a man and his dog.
Once I accepted the book for what it was, I enjoyed it. But I just think I was led to this book under false pretenses!
