The book centers on a major problem that Todd has. His father is pressuring him to work hard on the school's basketball team. His father had played basketball on his own school's team but an injury cut his career short so he is basically projecting what he wanted to be onto his son.

The problem is that a new creative writing class starts at school and Todd is chosen to be in it. At first he wants to get out of the program (it seems it was involuntary in nature), but once things start he realizes
