This is a truly odd, magical tale. A young girl, Nutmeg, her brother and her uncle, all ostensibly shipwrecked, live on next to nothing until the day when the girl finds a genie in a bottle. Her wish for "something different" for meals, which have consisted largely of cardboard and sawdust, sends them on a magical journey. There are lots of unanswered questions -- some might find the open-ended quality of the story unsatisfying, but we (my child, husband and I) found both the story

Delightful tale of a moping family who live in a pile of wreckage near the shore, eating cardboard for breakfast, until the day young Nutmeg conjures up a genie. Her humble wish (for better breakfast fare) turns the family’s lives wonderfully upside down!

This was an odd story; creative and imaginative, but very odd. Our oldest really likes it, and we've read it a few times.

i really loved the artwork and the story was really imaginative. don't think my little one would like this one very much. nightmare inducing, perhaps?

David Lucas tells unique stories, that's for sure. This is an odd one. But we like odd a lot in this family : )
