This Stephen White has all one could want in a detective mystery. Alan Gregory is a psychologist in Boulder, Colorado. Highly ethical but more so inquisitive and analytical. In a short span of time he has a client murdered by a abusive husband, another blown up in a home explosion, another shot to death. At this time Alan is trying to put his practice back together due to fictitious accusations which caused him to lose most of his clientele, so he takes on a part time job as assistant to the cou...more

Mar 12, 2010 Ed rated it 3 of 5 stars  ·  review of another edition Recommends it for: Crime Fiction fans and Kellerman fans
This is my first Stephen White novel. I would have been more impressed if I hadn't already read most of Jonathan Kellerman's work. As with Kellerman, White is also a psychologist who has a policeman friend, who is hired by the Boulder Coroner as a consultant, etc., etc.

The biggest difference is that there is more humor and action in White's offering and better plotting, character development and depth in Kellerman's books. I didn't see any acknowledgment of Kellerman's influence anywhere but the...more

This book started off great. Great character development, subtle humor, nice details etc, however the plot was never very clear to me and with about 100 pages left to read, I put it aside not understanding what was going on or where the story was going.
The author seems more concerned with describing the Colorado country side, Dr Gregory shaving his legs, and dragging on about Gregory's inability to decide which woman to have a permantent relationship with (where this inability to decide fits in...more

This is the 2nd book in the Alan Gregory series and the 3rd or 4th I've read. Private Practices picks up a few months after the events that occurred in the first book, and many familiar characters return, plus at least one character in this book is introduced and makes an appearance in at least 1 of the later books in the series.
Yet again, Alan finds himself in the midst of a whole mess unfolding in Boulder, Colorado, beginning with a shootout in the building his psychology practice shares with...more

I read this Stephen White mystery because reviews for the latest book in this series, The Last Lie, were so enticing. I started with this, the second in the series starring Dr Alan Gregory, because the library didn’t have the first. I’m about to remedy that by buying a copy and giving it to the library. Stephen White is a skilled mystery writer and I’m hooked.

Here’s what his web site http://www.authorstephenwhite.com/Boo... says about Private Practices:

"Private Practices" is the second book in the Alan Gregory series by Stephen White. The main continuing characters are Dr. Gregory, psychologist, his assistant DA girlfriend, Lauren Crowder, and a Boulder, Colorado police detective, Sam Purdy. Dr. Alan Gregory is a practicing psychologist whose life at present is quite complicated. His almost-ex wife is pregnant and wants him back, his present girlfriend, who is an assistant DA and who has MS can be distant and uncommunicative. Professionally, o...more

One of the first books S. White wrote and one of my favorites. Dr. Alan's not so girly in this book; his soon-to-be-ex-wife and his new girlfriend, still somewhat bitchy/whiny. (What manly men shave their legs for their girlfriends?! Really?!) Seems he's been getting his little digs in about George Bush since the beginning...still very annoying. The story was good enough to ignore the conservative digs, the leg shaving, the catty women...I recommend.

I liked this one so much more than Privileged Information. Even though I was able to figure our "whodunit" it was still quite suspenseful. White has tons of action in his books. What I really love are his characters. Alan Gregory has a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and it happens time after time in this novel. Whether its a shootout in the office or the house blowing up as he is waiting for its occupant to come home, Alan Gregory can be sure to be in the thick of things do...more

It got better as I went along, as long as I put aside the eery similarity to Kellerman. There is more wry humor, which I liked, but there is also more romantic drama and, being that I hate romance novels, I could have done without that.
He does prattle on at times, needlessly and there are several incidents of redudant words in the same sentence, that might be more of an editing issue then a writing issue.
All in all, 3 stars, and I would dabble in other entries in the series.

Dr. Alan Gregory, a clinical psychologist has interesting patients. They always seem to get him in trouble. He becomes involved with the murder of one which leads to a great deal of intrigue with a number of them. He also still can't decide to divorce his wife and committ to his girlfriend. An interesting man that doesn't take himself seriously, which makes for a fun book to read. He certainly has many adventures for a professional man.

Hard to believe I missed the second book in this fantastic series when I started reading them OH SO MANY years ago! I love White's writing and the great cast of characters in this series. I always manage to learn something psychologically too. Not a bad mix, if you ask me!
Seriously, if you like psychological/crime suspense novels, you should do yourself a BIG favor and pick up the first book in this series, Privileged Information! I promise, you won't be able to put it down!

Dr. Alan Gregory's psychologist practice is flagging through no fault of his own so in between patients he is consulting for the local coroner's office investigating suspicious deaths. His girlfriend Lauren Croder, assistant DA is involved in a high profile grand jury case whose primary witnesses are dropping like flies and Alan Gregory seems to be on scene at each death. Several prominent citizens are entrapped in the conspiracy and somehow Dr. Gregory's patients are involved in this and he is...more

We are re-introduced to Dr. Alan Gregory; a clinical psychologist practicing in Boulder, CO. He continues to treat some very interesting people. Once again, they lead him along a trail of crime and mayhem. Pretty good.

After reading his latest book - Warning Signs - and loving it, I was thrilled to learn that it was his 10th book and I had 9 others just waiting for me! I thought that Private Practices was the first one but it turned out to be #2. No matter, it was great. Boulder psychologist Alan Gregory seems to be attracting crime, his offices are broken into, a patient of his partners is shot and killed, one of his own patients is suicidal with a gun and now someone is after Alan himself. What makes White's...more

These characters, the writing...something about Stephen White keeps me coming back. It's an escape to visit people I really enjoy every time I pick one of his books.

I enjoy reading about the relationship Alan Gregory has with his patients. Not sure I liked his indecision over his girlfriend and ex-wife.

The main character, a psychologist, is not compelling for me. He can't decide between two women, but shaves his legs for one of them! His involvement in dangerous investigating stretches my imagination. I will read another of White's books to see if my impression changes.
Lisa
This series is feeling like Jonathan Kellerman, where the psychologist and the police officer work together. But having said that I am enjoying the development of the characters, and will continue to read this series.
Carrie
Pretty good, kept up the suspense. There was some relationship drama I didn't really care for, but it's all good.
Joanne
am looping back to the earlier books in this series. Interesting, fairly complex. I enjoy the psychological overtones.
Marcy
good mystery - how can all these people keep dying around this guy? fun to picture the places in and around Boulder.

This book did not start getting interesting until about 75% of the way through. Kept on reading hoping it was going to start soon.
Joe O'c
Good; Continuing character: Alan Gregory; a boy and his therapist are at the center of a series of murders.
Heather
Alex Delaware watch out! There is a new crime-solving psychologist in town. Great suspense.
April
Not as good as james Patterson but still Stephen white shows promise in this one
Joanne
I enjoy Stephen White, you have to pay attention, but it's worth the effort.
Martha
Read this one well after the rest of the series, good background.
Jill
Totally fun - Stephen White does murder mysteries set in Boulder!
Richard
Casey Sparrow earns this book an additional full star. I hope she appears in later books.
