I quite enjoyed reading this book. It reminded me so much of Holland and at the same time produced much more to my interest. This book could now be taken to be a historical text for a lazy American (if this term is not too much redundant). Much history of Holland is laid out, some as a field trip through the countryside. This is not a challenging read but I bet that the orignal target audience of young folks will hardly touch it these days though the book is still to be found in the juvenile...more

I adored this book as a child. The St Nicholas Eve story, where the Saint comes and calls all the children out on their faults, is quite realistic, according to my Dutch friends.

I liked the story about Hans and his family but the author takes a MAJOR detour in the middle with another group of boys and ends up delving into a history/geography/art lesson that takes up the big part of the middle of the book ( at which point my son gave up- he wanted to get back to Hans Brinker but didn't have the patience to wait until the end). I trudged through to the end and liked the end but unless you want to know tons about Holland you could skip the middle. I kind of enjoyed learni...more

This is a book that I found on my shelf that I knew I had read once before, but it had been a while, so I couldn't really remember what it was about. I needed a book to help pass the time while I was housesitting, so I picked it up. Even though it is a young adult book I am enjoying it immensely. I am not far enough in to really know what it is about, but it takes place in Holland and the main character is named Hans who is from a poor family and he is trying to win a skating race and find so...more

I liked it because it discussed a lot of Dutch history. The author wrote a story to tell about Holland. It was a slow read. But, I'm glad I read it and I enjoyed the story of the Brinker family.

This is a childrens book about kids in Holland, but really it's mostly about the geography of Holland. I cannot imagine how it ever captured the attention of a child.

Once the story got interesting, the book forgot about those people for 100 pages and bored me to tears with a very very very detailed account of some rather unlikable boys ice skating to The Hague and touring churches along the way. What the hell.

I loved this book then and especially the second time I read it at the age of 20 just prior to going to The Netherlands on an LDS mission. It's an especially poignant book for me since my sister has been in an accident and has a brain injurty and is not the person she was before the accident, similar to Jan's father.
