Sugar Snow starts out like all of the My First Little House books we've read so far. The story centers around Pa calling the recent snow "sugar snow" and Laura not understanding. Nearing the end of the book the illustrations show Grandpa tapping the maple trees for syrup and then boiling the sap to turn it to syrup. Julia's like most kids I suspect when it comes to this as she never knew, or cared, where syrup came from or how is was made. (This could be partly because she'd always ref

This is another sweet picture book in the My First Little House Books series, that introduces younger children to the longer stories written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We have yet to read her original tales together, but in the meantime we really enjoy these picture books. The story in this book involves Laura learning about maple sugar. It's a very simple tale, but combined with the terrific illustrations by Doris Ettlinger, it's a very charming story.

Much to my delight, my boys who are five and two absolutely love these books! The "My First Little House" series takes stories out of the original little house books and illustrates them beautifully. My boys love to point out each family member and my five year old asks lots of questions. These books have become a wonderful way to introduce history and "the simple life" to my little ones. These books have great family values. :)

Good easy discussion of maple syrup making, but I was disappointed that the story made laura stay inside the house, ma told her she "could go out tomorrow", but it never happened. Very unsatisfying because there was a "No" from a parent without a good reason why not to go outside. Kids need all the encouragement they can get to play outdoors, but this didn't do it.

I have wanted to make sugar snow since I was a kid. A simpler time in this country captured beautifully in a wonderful illustrated series companion to the original series. Love it.

I love these Laura Ingalls Wilder inspired stories. Uses text from the actual books paired with beautiful illustrations. This one we read before collecting sap at the maple festival.

A nice book to read before going to the Maple Festival (although my daughter is convinced the sugar cake illustrated is chocolate).

Any book that introduces my daughter to Little House on the Prairie is a keeper in my mind. All of these are perfect for little ones. They teach a simpler way of life, when children had limited toys, plenty of chores and were very happy.

I vividly recall reading this book as a child then, as a parent, to my daughter. Maple syrup and the winter snow.

Since sugar snow is one of my favorite scenes in LHitBW, I like this picture book version more than I do the rest.
