As in the author's previous picture book, Window, this book is observed through the window of a house in a typical urban neighbourhood, each picture showing a year's developments. This is Window in reverse, though, with the land being reclaimed from built-up concrete to a gradual greening, shown through the artist's characteristic collage illustrations.

Jack Kirby and the X-man
A book about the growing 'reclaim your streets', guerrilla gardening urban transformation, set in the context of a young girl, Trace Smyth, growing up from a newborn baby until she herself has a newborn.

The book is set in the inner-west of Sydney (within the Leichhardt Council. This is an area of Sydney which used to be very working class - but more recently has been increasingly yuppie-fied, as this book attests.

The "Sorry" in the sky when Tracy is 12 years old refers to the skywriting above Sy...more

Belonging by Jeannie Baker is another of her books which is a testament to the power of collage which speak volumes about green issues and questions our part in the changing of our environment.

Along the same lines as 'Window', one of other books, this story also shows how the environment changes outside a particular window. This time, we track the changes as a little baby girl grows to adulthood and starts her own family.

I have actually used this in a geography lesson - spot the difference exerc...more

I love everything Jeannie Baker creates. Let’s just say that now. And Belonging was fantastic for watching the movement of bringing back native plants and animals to an urban community. My son loved this book and immediately requested that we reread the book once we finished reading it the first time. We loved watching the girl grow, watching the green arrive in the community, and then on the third read through the book, my son finally recognized how brilliant the artistic creation was in the bo...more

My son bought this home from school and I'm so glad that he did. It is an amazing book that can be enjoyed in so many ways. There are no words in the book so you can follow the story through the pictures or even make up your own story. We loved watching the young Tracy grow up and in the end, as the back cover suggests start her own store Tracy's forest.

Another gorgeous Jeannie Baker book. It took my several "readings" of the wordless picture book to realise who the boy next door was. Read "Windows" first, then this for a positive story about the move towards referencing of city areas.

An alienating city street gradually becomes a place to call home. Little by little, baby Tracy grows. She and her neighbours begin to rescue their street. Together, children and adults plant grass and trees and bushes in the empty spaces. They paint murals over old graffiti. They stop the cars. Everything begins to blossom.
'Belonging' explores the re-greening of the city: the role of community, the empowerment of people and the significance of children, family and neighbourhood...more
