This book is a sad, very, very sad story about one girl, Matilda, who lived in hardships all her life. Once she finds her happiness, she will also find her greatest sorrow. Once you think Matilda will have a happy life after all, you will get knocked on the ground once again. Maybe someone else will have that happy ending when Matilda couldn't.

Australia is the place where I would like to go, and I really liked all the beautiful descriptions of the landscapes. I loved Jenny, and how the author pu

I enjoyed it soooo much. I loved it so much I am afraid I can't write a review of this book.

I loved everything. Every little part, every conversation, every diary. I can't pick just one out of all these great and magnificent things.

I still don't know how did McKinley got such idea. It is so different from everything I have ever read.

And I guess this is it, because I can't go on talking al day long about how much this book surprised me in a good way. :)

This novel - I believe it is her first - was the first I ever read by Tamara McKinley. I picked it up at the flea market, and really didn't think it would be more than a quick read. I was mistaken: it turned out to be a very enjoyable novel, with interesting plot turns.

Tamara McKinley takes us back through time, first to Matilda Thomas in the 1930s. Matilda lives in the Australian outback with her father on the sheep station Churinga - the connecting element between her story and that of Jenny,

This book was great ,but it is also a very tragic, sad story and shocking at the same time it is a story about Two women who are trying to stay strong no matter how life was cruel to them The story line is gripping and powerful The characters seem so real that both Sydney and the Outback are vividly described it will bring tears to your eyes from beginning to the end...

Loved it so much I couldn't put it down. It's been a little while since I've read a Tamara McKinley book and every time I do I'm reminded why I love her stories so much. Her vivid descriptions of the Australian Outback and the harshness of life out there is just amazing - she captures everything perfectly and implants it into your imagination.

Although I had Jenny's link to Churinga pretty much pegged in the second chapter and Finn's identity worked out right from the moment they met, I thoroughl

A very engaging and enjoyable read. We begin with Jenny who is struggling with the recent loss of her husband and her son. She discovers she has inherited a working sheep station in the outback and out of curiosity she decides to travel from her beachside Sydney home and visit the station.

We meet an interesting array of characters as she adjusts to life on the station, the most interesting is in the form of diaries from the previous owner Matilda. We learn of Matilda’s struggles and successes an

Very good book recommended to me by my mother. However, it had a critical flaw that nagged at me throughout. Supposedly this young woman lost not only her husband but also her baby in an accident. However, the author rarely reveals her grief, and even then only for her husband. Almost no mention is made of how the baby’s loss affects her. It was so noticeable to me I found myself irritated with the author.

I could not put it down! I really enjoyed the story within the story which was told in an easy straightforward manner. Looking back, the narrative was full of clues. I also was fascinated with the information about the Australian outback, as well as the customs of the native dwellers. Excellent novel. I was actually hoping there was a sequel!

When this book was recommended to me, I thought - oh, no, it's definitely not my type of reading, but the owner of the book insisted it was nothing like I have ever read. And now I totally agree with her. It's not some pink balloon of sugar life, it's about Australia and the tough life there, about women who have to live and fight for their lives all by themselves; it's about love and sacrifices; about how cruel the nature of people can be. I loved every part of this book. I loved it so much tha ...more

I was on vacation when I read this book, not even mine, it was my dad’s. I started the first pages on the road, it just captivated me. It’s that book that engulfs you into its world. I might describe it as “tragic” but I’m not going to say more (no spoilers !!!).

So if you like novels showcasing family genealogy surrounded by mysterious clues and discoveries. Then this book is for you. Personally I love this kind of story, thus leading me to buy other books of the same author.

Description: For Jenny, Churinga, a remote sheep-station in the Australian Outback, is a parting gift from her husband following his tragic death. Not knowing where to turn for comfort, it seems natural to travel to Churinga. She finds a harsh, unforgiving place, but not without its own quiet beauty. Jenny's new neighbors seem reluctant to talk about the previous owner, Matilda Thomas, but Jenny becomes aware of her predecessor's lingering presence. Then she discovers Matilda's diaries and uncov ...more

I really wanted to give this book three and a half stars. It was a page turner and great for a summer read, but I predicted the ending almost by the book's midpoint. The dialogue was also silly at times.

...more
