Recommends it for: anyone who like wordless picture books
After simply adoring some of the later books in the Carl series, I have to admit that I was a bit underwhelmed by the first book of the series, Good Dog, Carl. I think that in general, it is a sweet (albeit for some parents, perhaps a touch unnerving) story, full of fun, whimsy and mischief. However, neither the story nor the illustrations managed to completely charm me like I was recently "wowed" by Carl's Summer Vacation and Carl's Snowy Afternoon. The illustrations in both of the...more

Okay, DO NOT go thinking that all dogs that look like Carl are safe, because Carl, the dog in this book, is a Rottweiler, albeit a very well trained one.

Do NOT leave your baby alone in the care of your pet dog. Even a well-trained one. And especially not in the care of some random Rottweiler. Rottweilers are a very powerful and potentially dangerous breed. Don't even go near a Rottweiler you don't know, let alone put your child in the care of one. This is a complete and utter fanta...more

This book made me laugh out loud although at times I found myself thinking, I would never leave my baby at home alone with only a dog to take care of her. (Being a new mom fresh in my mind). It is a bit unrealistic, but great for the imagination of a child. I think anyone who likes animals and children would enjoy this virtually wordless picture book. I enjoyed the illustrations and will read other Carl books.

Good Dog, Carl follows the story of a dog that is left to watch after a baby when a mother has to go out for a little while. The story is nice because Carl acts like a human throughout the book and clearly loves the baby. Throughout the day, Carl and the baby do different activities such as play dress up, slide down the laundry chute, and dance. Carl even makes the baby a lunch. Lunch is very messy so Carl gives the baby and bath and cleans up the house before the mother returns, which is a ...more

1. This is a wordless book

2. This book illustrates a story about a baby being cared for by the trusted family dog, Carl. The baby spends a few hours making messes, dancing, and swimming in the fish tank while Carl babysits him. Each page contains timeless illustrations that allow readers to make up the words as they go along.

3. A.) The illustrations are accurate because they tell a story, the are arranged in an organized fashion that portrays routines which are relatable to ...more

Okay, in Peter Pan when we discover that the children's nanny is a dog, we're surprised but heck, it was the 1800s and she was an Old English Sheep Dog and wears a bonnet. Carl looks to be a Rottweiler. On the cover he has a big grin on his face. But, all I'm thinking is, if Mom is late getting home, Carl's gonna eat that baby. *Disclaimer: I am NOT a dog person, I am a CAT person BUT I wouldn't leave my infant in the care of my cat either.

However, if I put aside the bad and unfair rep...more

A mother leaves her Rottweiler, Carl, in charge of watching the family baby while she runs out. This story depicts the mischief that Carl and the baby get into while the mother is out. A.) The composition of the illustrations keep the story focused on the two main characters. B.) The illustrator does a wonderful job of keeping the background images to a minimum allowing the reader to focus on the two main characters. C.) On one page the illustrator consol...more

We had a rottweiler (Asta) when the children were young - so this book fit into our family very well - given to us by good friends the Cunninghams. There are no words in this book, so you create the story as you're looking at the pictures. At first, over-protective new mother that I was at the time (no, I'm not so much anymore, 19 years later - okay, maybe just a little), I was horrified by Carl's adventures with the baby - but Carl is a very good care-taker and the baby is always safe. One of my favorite kid's books.

As an extra added bonus, after reading this book, you won't immediately think of The Omen every time you see a Rottweiler.

I love reading this book over and over again. Mom really likes this book, too. I just wish Lucy was as fun as Carl.

I read this book with my son a million times. We had a big black dog who was an equal partner in child-rearing. Actually, she may have thought she was slightly more responsible than the humans. And she maybe was right. Many of my son's earliest memories involve Inky standing between him and danger. So we loved Carl, of course.

This fantastical little book tells (mostly without words) the story of the best babysitter ever- Carl the Rottweiler. Baby's parents go out on the town and leave...more

Carl is the family Rottweiler who is in charge of watching the baby while her mother is gone. Once mom leaves baby and Carl’s adventure begins. They go all over the house getting in all sides of trouble. Jumping on the bed, try on Mother's jewelry, slide down the laundry chute, and swim in the fish tank.

I lowered my earlier rating because I got tired of this book really quickly. The paintings are still very sweet, but it gets annoying to have to keep ad libbing the story.

Ok, I know this book only has a few words and it's for very young children, but it's one of the sweetest books ever.

It tells the story of a rottweiler who is told to watch the baby while the mother goes out for a bit, certainly not a great parenting suggestion, but the basis for a very cute story. Ca...more

Brief Description: Carl, the family dog, is left to watch over the baby while mom runs errands.

This was a very adorable book. Once the mom leaves to run her errands, Carl shepherds the baby around the house. They get into all sorts of mischief, but never anything dangerous. The concerns I have for the story may not seem realistic as the child absorbing the book and the parent introducing the book to the child would never r...more

This isn't really a read-aloud, because there isn't much to read aloud! Mostly it's a book full of pictures showing a dog "taking care of" a small child and them getting into all sorts of adventures like swimming in the fish tank. My younger boys (7 and 5) enjoyed this book and had a lot of fun making up dialogue to go with the pictures. They were concerned that a dog isn't really a good choice for a babysitter so I didn't feel I needed to address the lack of safety in the book.

This was my cousins favorite book when she was little and I'm grateful to her for sharing this story with me. I like that theres little text thus opening up the possibility of a fresh new narrative with each pass through the pages.
Is Carl a fun babysitter? Yes. Would I like it if my dog babysat me for the day? You bet. Should Child Protective Services be called to the house to do a full blown investigation? Absolutely.
But I will definitely enjoy this one over and over again.

Good Dog, Carl is a wordless book (besides the first and last page). The story is about a woman who tells the dog, Carl, to watch after the child while she goes out. Carl takes the baby out of the crib and they have many adventures such as jumping on the bed, playing dress up, going down the laundry shoot, playing in the fish tank, dancing, and eating. I thought it was funny how the dog does all these things with the baby then cleans it up, puts the baby back in the ...more

In this first of a series of wordless picture-book devoted to the adventures of a baby-sitting Rottweiler (don't try this at home, parents!), Mother instructs Carl to 'look after the baby," and goes out. Naturally, a dog and infant have better things to do than nap, so baby crawls out of its crib, and Carl oversees its messy (and rather chaotic) playtime, before shepherding his charge back to bed...

I found this little book charming, and am glad I finally gave this series, and it...more

Good Dog, Carl shows the bond between man and dog. With great illistrations to show the visuals of the book carl sets out to take care of his owners baby. The book shows a different side to what would happen if you left your child home with the family dog. It also gives the dog a human like quaility for playing with the baby and how it would take care of a human. In the end carl fulfills his duties and is a good dog.

Great book...enjoyed by all of us! The illustrations of egg tempera are just stunning. However, as a mom, I was a bit concerned about a baby being left to be tended by what appears to be a Rottweiler, swimming in an aquarium, eating grapes (which would surely choke the poor baby), taking a bath, etc.! But...these things didn't phase Jack one bit and he poured over each page of pictures!

The artwork and the sweetness of Carl are the only things I can recommend about this book. I understand that this is an older book and childcare practices were different at the time of writing, but the idea that a mother would leave her baby alone in the house with a dog is unnerving. I also thought that the image of the baby swimming in the fish tank was neither funny nor endearing.
Caroline Barnett
Good Dog, Carl is one of my favorite books. As a young child, before being able to read, this was a great book because there is only text on the first and last page. The book is a collection of pictures, as a "reader" you have to make up your own words. Good Dog, Carl is a great book series for beginner readers getting to practice reading without having to stumble over words!

Recommends it for: People who raise their kids alongside killer dogs.
A mother leaves her baby with her Rottweiler so she can presumably take care of her affairs. There are hardly any words (since babies and dogs don't talk) so we watch with wonder to see what they get up to. It's fun to ad lib the story and ask your little one to describe what's happening. Good but I'm not crazy enough to seek out the whole series.

This is a fun story that uses words only on the first and last pages. Within the middle of the book, the pictures demonstrate cause and effects of the various activities Carl and the baby do throughout the day. This is a great book for talking about prediction and cause and effect.
Allison
The story or no words about a baby and his buddy the Rottweiler and their adventures throughout the day. This is one of my favorite books. I love how the author didn’t use words to tell the story. I think its important to let the child use their imagination and tell their own story.

As always, the pictures are lovely. I've become very fond of Carl the dog but find the other books in series more interesting. However, once you've adopted Carl as your book pet, all contributions to the series are welcome and this one is certainly likable.

Wordless picture book from the Carl series. This book is great for inferring and points of view. Carl is left with the baby to take care of. Carl and the baby have fun getting into trouble around the house and Carl cleans it all up before the owner gets home.
