After simply adoring some of the later books in the Carl the Rottweiler series, I have to admit that I was and am a bit underwhelmed by the first book of the series, Good Dog, Carl. I think that in general, it is a sweet (albeit for some parents, perhaps a touch unnerving) story, full of fun, whimsy and mischief. However, neither the story nor the illustrations have managed to completely charm me like I was recently "wowed" by Carl's Summer Vacation and Carl's Snowy Afternoon. The illustrations...more

Okay, DO NOT go thinking that all dogs that look like Carl are safe, because Carl, the dog in this book, is a Rottweiler, albeit a very well trained one.

Do NOT leave your baby alone in the care of your pet dog. Even a well-trained one. And especially not in the care of some random Rottweiler. Rottweilers are a very powerful and potentially dangerous breed. Don't even go near a Rottweiler you don't know, let alone put your child in the care of one. This is a complete and utter fantasy. Got that?...more

This book made me laugh out loud although at times I found myself thinking, I would never leave my baby at home alone with only a dog to take care of her. (Being a new mom fresh in my mind). It is a bit unrealistic, but great for the imagination of a child. I think anyone who likes animals and children would enjoy this virtually wordless picture book. I enjoyed the illustrations and will read other Carl books.

Good Dog, Carl follows the story of a dog that is left to watch after a baby when a mother has to go out for a little while. The story is nice because Carl acts like a human throughout the book and clearly loves the baby. Throughout the day, Carl and the baby do different activities such as play dress up, slide down the laundry chute, and dance. Carl even makes the baby a lunch. Lunch is very messy so Carl gives the baby and bath and cleans up the house before the mother returns, which is a very...more

1. This is a wordless book

2. This book illustrates a story about a baby being cared for by the trusted family dog, Carl. The baby spends a few hours making messes, dancing, and swimming in the fish tank while Carl babysits him. Each page contains timeless illustrations that allow readers to make up the words as they go along.

3. A.) The illustrations are accurate because they tell a story, the are arranged in an organized fashion that portrays routines which are relatable to children.

Okay, in Peter Pan when we discover that the children's nanny is a dog, we're surprised but heck, it was the 1800s and she was an Old English Sheep Dog and wears a bonnet. Carl looks to be a Rottweiler. On the cover he has a big grin on his face. But, all I'm thinking is, if Mom is late getting home, Carl's gonna eat that baby. *Disclaimer: I am NOT a dog person, I am a CAT person BUT I wouldn't leave my infant in the care of my cat either.

However, if I put aside the bad and unfair reputation th...more

This book is about a dog that takes care of a baby while the mother is gone. The dog and baby do many different things. The baby rides on the dog’s back to different places throughout the house. The baby powders the dog’s nose, goes down the laundry shoot and the dog has to get him, and goes in the fish tank and the dog has to get him out. Also while the mother is gone, the dog and baby dance, the dog makes the baby a snack, gives the baby a bath and dries him off and puts him back in his crib....more

Good Dog, Carl by Alexandra Day is about a dog, specifically a Rottweiler, who looks after a baby while the mother goes out for some errands. The dog acts like a babysitter and gets involved in things with the baby. They do all sorts of activities like swim in the fish tank, play dress up with the mother's clothes, and dance with the dog. Without using words, the illustrator really portrays the story. The pictures go hand in hand with what is going on, which makes it a perfect wordless book. I t...more

A mother leaves her Rottweiler, Carl, in charge of watching the family baby while she runs out. This story depicts the mischief that Carl and the baby get into while the mother is out. A.) The composition of the illustrations keep the story focused on the two main characters. B.) The illustrator does a wonderful job of keeping the background images to a minimum allowing the reader to focus on the two main characters. C.) On one page the illustrator consolidates mul...more

This took me down memory lane, I loved the interaction and relationship between Carl and the infant. The two of them spend the day together while the mother is away. The infant rides on Carl's back, he prepares her lunch and then does a little swimming in the fish tank, and puts her down for a nap. I didn't have the pleasure of owning a dog until I was in High School so I found this book to be my own personal way of seeing what it would be like if I had a dog of my own.

This book is appropriate...more

After adoring this sweet story when I was younger, I find myself giving Good Dog Carl just as much praise now that I'm twenty one years old. This wordless picture book allows the reader to use their full imagination as a mom leaves a Rottweiler to look after her baby. While Carl is babysitting the baby, the baby rides Carl, gets on a big bed, sits on a vanity and plays with jewelry, swims in a fish tank, and gets into some bread and butter. However, the reader can use their imagination to read a...more

We had a rottweiler (Asta) when the children were young - so this book fit into our family very well - given to us by good friends the Cunninghams. There are no words in this book, so you create the story as you're looking at the pictures. At first, over-protective new mother that I was at the time (no, I'm not so much anymore, 19 years later - okay, maybe just a little), I was horrified by Carl's adventures with the baby - but Carl is a very good care-taker and the baby is always safe. In fact,...more

Good Dog, Carl is a wonderful wordless book that is about Carl as soon as his owner leaves takes his owners infant daughter on an adventure through the house. Carl takes her to the moms bedroom to play on the bed and to get into her stuff on the dresser. The baby goes down the laundry shoot and Carl runs downstairs to meet the daring baby. Carl even does some tricks, gets the baby a snack and cleans the baby and the house before the mother comes home. Its a book that children look through and kn...more

One of my favorite kid's books.

As an extra added bonus, after reading this book, you won't immediately think of The Omen every time you see a Rottweiler.

I love reading this book over and over again. Mom really likes this book, too. I just wish Lucy was as fun as Carl.

I read this book with my son a million times. We had a big black dog who was an equal partner in child-rearing. Actually, she may have thought she was slightly more responsible than the humans. And she maybe was right. Many of my son's earliest memories involve Inky standing between him and danger. So we loved Carl, of course.

This fantastical little book tells (mostly without words) the story of the best babysitter ever- Carl the Rottweiler. Baby's parents go out on the town and leave Carl in c...more

A fun book that works as an imaginative activity with your kids. The book shows of a dog taking after a toddler while the mother is away. He gives the boy rides, food, a bath, plays with him etc.
I went through this book with my 2 younger brothers. Since the book's story is through illustrations and not so much through words, I let them each take a turn interpreting the pictures, telling the story, then I went ahead and gave them my version of what everything meant. we had a great time. PB:8 Good Dog, Carl. I enjoyed this book a lot as a child but today I realize that this mother leaves her baby to the dog for a little while and that just isn't safe. The pictures tell of a great and cute little story about a baby and dog's day together as they get into things and have fun while the mother is gone. But this story isn't meant for adult's reading, yet for children and they probably will not realize how socially unacceptable it is for a mother to leave the dog in charge of a newbor...more

Carl is the family Rottweiler who is in charge of watching the baby while her mother is gone. Once mom leaves baby and Carl’s adventure begins. They go all over the house getting in all sides of trouble. Jumping on the bed, try on Mother's jewelry, slide down the laundry chute, and swim in the fish tank.

“Good Dog, Carl” is a wonderfully illustrated cute wordless children’s book. The pictures are great and very kid friendly. The story is also humorous and would be entertaining to anybody of any age. I think that wordless picture books give the reader a lot of freedom to help make the story exciting. You as the person reading aloud get to put in your own dialogue and make the story fun for those around you. “Good dog, Carl” is a sweet story about a loving dog and a mischievous baby that can make...more

I lowered my earlier rating because I got tired of this book really quickly. The paintings are still very sweet, but it gets annoying to have to keep ad libbing the story.

Ok, I know this book only has a few words and it's for very young children, but it's one of the sweetest books ever.

It tells the story of a rottweiler who is told to watch the baby while the mother goes out for a bit, certainly not a great parenting suggestion, but the basis for a very cute story. Carl and the baby get into al...more

Brief Description: Carl, the family dog, is left to watch over the baby while mom runs errands.

This was a very adorable book. Once the mom leaves to run her errands, Carl shepherds the baby around the house. They get into all sorts of mischief, but never anything dangerous. The concerns I have for the story may not seem realistic as the child absorbing the book and the parent introducing the book to the child would never really do. I would hope t...more

This isn't really a read-aloud, because there isn't much to read aloud! Mostly it's a book full of pictures showing a dog "taking care of" a small child and them getting into all sorts of adventures like swimming in the fish tank. My younger boys (7 and 5) enjoyed this book and had a lot of fun making up dialogue to go with the pictures. They were concerned that a dog isn't really a good choice for a babysitter so I didn't feel I needed to address the lack of safety in the book.

Fun, cute, simple...more

Maddie: I like it because the dog gets the baby out of its crib and makes the baby a mess and then they jump on the bed. I want to climb up someplace and jump on the bed! And then what they did is they went in the kitchen and made a mess and the baby slide down the chute into the basement and the doggie came and got him and then he putted him back in bed. And he was lying down and the mommy said, "Good dog, Carl!"

Sonia: Carl has the same color as Cooper and the same color tongue.

My all time favorite. There are written words only on the first and last page. When my nephew, Joseph, was a wee toddler, I would "read" this book to him, making up words and then say, "now you read." The beautiful watercolors by Alexandra Day made it easy for him and he would be so thrilled. For any lover of dogs, watercolor, childrens book illustrations, rottweilers, great and humorous dog stories - this is your book. I will never ever give my copy away. Thank you Alexandra Day.

This was my cousins favorite book when she was little and I'm grateful to her for sharing this story with me. I like that theres little text thus opening up the possibility of a fresh new narrative with each pass through the pages.
Is Carl a fun babysitter? Yes. Would I like it if my dog babysat me for the day? You bet. Should Child Protective Services be called to the house to do a full blown investigation? Absolutely.
But I will definitely enjoy this one over and over again.

Good Dog, Carl is a wordless book (besides the first and last page). The story is about a woman who tells the dog, Carl, to watch after the child while she goes out.
