"I have a dog. Nothing exotic or special, just an ordinary dog. In fact, I always thought he was a boring dog. What I mean is, he can fetch, roll over, and shake hands, but mostly he sleeps and eats."

I actually remember the day I purchased this book at my school book fair in second grade. I pestered my mother for awhole week trying to get money to buy this book until she gave up and gave it to me. I have probably read it like 40 billion times, but everytime I do read it it feels like I'm reading it for the first time. My favorite thing about this book is the setting! It makes you wonder, do dogs really live this way? I also love how the text is presented in this book which can show students ...more
This is the type of book that you never get tired of reading and always tends to pick up new things after every read! The Night I Followed the Dog, is a hilarious book that explores the concept that younger children tend to wonder when they go to bed at night. Nina Laden did a fabulous job by creating vivid illustrations as well as text that tells more than the story( you must check it out!) :)

This book is great for kids who love dogs or have a dog for a pet. It gives childern a wonderful adventure to read. This is a great book to share with your childern because it gives childern a push with there imagination. When I was little I loved this book and read it over and over. The illustrations are also great and they way some of the words are put on the page makes it fun for childern to read. The best part is at the end of the book when everything is "back to normal" between th...more
What child doesn't want to know where their dog goes at night? This adventurous, imaginative story gives a whole new take on where we think a dog travels. This book can get anyones imagination following especially a childs. This is a great book to read to kick off a story or journal article on the different places a dog or favorite animal might go, you could even let the students make a little comic book and let them show off not only their writing abilities but also their artistic abilities as ...more
"The Night I Followed the Dog," is such a fun book! Students will enojy how humorous and fun this story is. When reading this story to students, I would ask them to predict where they think the little boy's dog is going at night. What do they think the little boy is going to do to try and find out where his dog is going? This story would be a great lead-in to having the students write there own "The Night I Followed the (insert their own pet.)" It will be great to see what th...more
Nina Laden is an author and illustrator that has fun with her text. She uses words like T.V and makes the word into a picture. This book can be used to kill to birds with one stone, literacy and social studies. Social studies can be incorporated to talk about communities and the hands on learning for the lesson can be building a 3D community. Younger grades are sucked into the book because of the eye-popping text and illustrations! Students will not want to put this book down.
The night I followed the dog is an amazing book. Really funny and wonderful illustrations, if it is funny to me still, then I can only imagine that the kids will love it too. It is perfect for a pet lover, and it answers a question that I'm sure many have, what do dogs do when you're away? Definitely recommend it for anyone and it is also a good lead in if you wanted to do a writing unit, say "the night I followed the____________" what could other people/animals do?
I was read this book in one of my classes at the age of 20. Once I saw the illustrations and use of picture texts I quickly remembered this book from my childhood! The pictures in this books are smooth and detailed. The story is clever and so are the illustrations used for certian words. This book is great to use to work on predictions espically since the pictures are so detailed. I would suggest this book to students 4-8.
This is a fun and unexpected book! I think all dog lovers alike will get a kick out of this story and even begin to wonder where their dog may go while they are sleeping. The illustrations are hilarious and I think students at all elementary levels will enjoy this. I would include a writing piece with this book by asking my students where they think their dog goes at night and if they would follow him.
This book is an adorable read aloud, perfect for predictions and inferences. In this humorous tale about a boy following his dog, children are able to predict why the dog might be wearing certain clothes, where they think the dog is going, or what they think the dog is doing. The unexpected ending leaves children as well as adults laughing. The illustrations add to the entertaining aspect of the book and create distinct and memorable characters.
This is a fun book about the night a boy follows his dog after dark and finds out the dog owns a nightclub for dogs! One of the things that makes it great it the way the author uses rebus and decorations around some of the words. If you were teaching writing, this might be a good way to help some of the more struggling writers be able to get their point across
This is such a fun read! I would definitely like to have this in my writing center so students can read this and really get their imaginations flowing. I might even read this to my students and do a writer's workshop entitled, "A Day in the Life of..." and let them choose who's life they would be in and decide what would happen in a day in the life of their choice.
I bet every child wonders what goes on in the minds of their pets. Fortunately, we have fun stories like this to give us some insight. I really appreciated this book. It was funny and is sure to engulf students from beginning to end. I would like for children to write imaginative stories about where they think their favorite pet ventures off to after hours.
This book is great building up suspense. Since you want to find out the ending of the story as a reader, my students would fully give their 1000% attention to the book. It is not that long that the students can follow along quite easily. The pictures are so fun to look at because the dog does some funny stuff that will make the kids laugh.
Reading this book to kids I think...promotes Using imagination. It has great illustrations and would serve to be a great writing prompt for kids to write what would happen if the followed their dog or pet on night and what it might do. This book has exciting activities for what a dog might do and it really entertains the kids.!
Very cute book, funny read for a child who has a dog. Funny plot and explination of the secret life of a dog. This would be a great book for a lesson in the classroom on predictions. Illustrates are very representative of text, which makes it easy for a child to read independently.
The strength of this book is in helping the reader see something from a different point of view. With students it could be used to talk about assumptions and perspective. Students could come up with their own creative story from another creature's point of view of the world.
I liked how Nina Laden played with the text to make it fun! This would be a great book to use for a writing activity. The teacher could ask her students to write about what their dog, or class pet does when no one is around. The Night I followed our class pet...
Cute book with lots of mystery. Students would love to read this book because the dog characters do human things. It is great for students' imagination. I would use this book to model mystery writing and making predictions during the reading.
Many children who have pets can relate to this book. This book has very cool illustrations. The author also plays with the text and that was neat also. Children will get a kick out of this book. Teachers can use this book for an investigating activity.
I really enjoyed this book. It is always so interesting and fun to personify animals and I think this book did an amazing job. A lot of children (and adults) imagine what it is like to speak to their pets or toys and picture what it would be like if they came to life. It's always entertaining to think like that and picture your dog running off to hang out with the other dogs in the middle of the night. This story was also very descriptive and used a lot of cool adjectives and places the dog trav...more
Ever wondered what dogs or other pets do when their owners are away? Well this book shows just that. I would use this book in the classroom as a fun read and to help them distinguish the difference between fact and fiction.
This is a great story with great illustrations. You can get your students to use their imaginations and write about what their pets do when they go to sleep. You could also get students to do an investigation on their pet.
This is a really fun book! The flow of the story and the concept of the boy's dog going out at night are great. Children can connect to this book if they have any pets at home. I recommend reading this book!
This book has such awesome illustrations. I would use this to really get students engaged in text participation. It also is a great book because it has suspense which is a tool for writing.
This book is so much fun and would be great for a read aloud. Children would be able to relate to this easily if they had a pet dog. Overall, I really enjoy reading this book over and over again.
This book is one of my least favorite books. The story is almost a copy of a movie an adult might see on TV, except the character is dog. The story does not teach anything to students.
This book had me smiling the whole time! It is a great read aloud. What I liked the most about this book is that there is a lot of subtle adult humor in this story.
this is a wonderful book for writing prompts. we could make our own the night i followed the ____ make anything we wanted or stick with the dog.
HUH? Maybe it's supposed to appeal to a child--it's as if a child wrote it? Painful to read aloud. Illustrations were slightly redeeming.
