This is an excellent history of the LDS Church in the west, 1847 - 1869. It begins with the 1st saint's arrival in the Salt Lake valley and ends near the end of Brigham Young's life, just at the time the railroad brought the west out of isolation. I'm not aware of any book that gives a better treatment of this period of Mormon church history.

First few chapters were a little slow, but I really enjoyed the book so far. The chapters on the Indians were excellent.
