A powerful survey of Russian literature in the 1920's, when the new Soviet government bit by bit restricted artistic freedom. Some of the authors studied managed to keep to their principles in the succeeding years of Stalinism, some changed to adapt to the new conditions, and some were eventually executed as "enemies of the people."
