Thanks to all the bowdlerized, Disneyfied stupidifications it's been through, poor old Heidi's story gets a bum rap. In fact, Heidi is no sap, and more to the point, her friend Clara with the wheelchair is no timid Victorian dying violet. Somebody plonked this great big book in my lap when I was seven years old, a good reader, and in need of something heavy to hold me down on a long car trip. It worked; it took me off from my flat prairie summer to a land of purple mountain peaks and jumping ...more

My sister and I were so enamored of this book when we were little. With that in mind, I'll let my four-star rating stand. However, I recently ran across a copy of the book and thought it might be fun to read it again after all these years. Nostalgia and all that, right? I was sickened by the over-the-top flowery writing. Gaaaaag me with syrupy sentiment! I was also surprised by all the gooey religious references, which I didn't remember AT ALL from my childhood readings of it. I don't obj...more

This was always one of my favorites as a child and I still enjoy it (and the sequels, though they are not by Johanna Spyri). It engages with what constitutes good treatment of children.

A prime example where the movie is far outdone by the book. Loved sharing this with the kids.

I never read this book as a kid. It sounded too girly. But it's a classic, so gave it a shot.

It's a slower read, for normal juvenile lit--owing to the fact, I'm sure, that it was written more than 100 years ago. Compared to other things I've read from the same time period, the book is a page turner! And it's a page turner compared to most of the adult fare I read, too. But it's not a lightweight book in terms of wordiness, length, and descriptions.

It does have a good...more

The edition that I actually read is from 1954 and I absolutely loved the tale of the little girl who goes to live with her grandfather in the mountains, etc. She shows a real strength of character and an aptitude to adapt to her surroundings and make the best of the situations in which she finds herself.

When I was 14, I ran away from home and lived in various places for a year. Fortunately, I had a family that made sure it wasn't on the street, but I was no less lonely or frightened with a roof over my head. I wasn't raised in any particular faith either - probably not for lack of trying (I remember going to church, just not liking it much or being made to keep going) - and somehow I found a great deal of strength and comfort in this book. Not the 'outdoor-wholesome' thing, but in the Grandmoth...more

I love Heidi! I feel the same way about the landscape of my home as she does. I love my Idaho mountains and the miles and miles of sagebrush. God's creations inspire people--and I believe they inspire goodness. It is easier for me to remember God in the mountains and valleys and forests and animal pens of the country than in the man-made cities with department stores and skyscrapers lining asphalt roads and concrete sidewalks. I empathize with Heidi's need for home and family and admire her abil...more

Wow. There are a few things going on here:

a) This translation is amusingly terrible. A few gems: "Now the children sat up in bed and said each her evening prayer" (284); "'Where are the precipices?' asked the child, but did not stir from her seat, for with every breeze the sweet perfume was wafted to her nostrils" (32); "His father, who followed the same business, and was also called goat-Peter, had been killed while felling wood the year before. His mother, ...more

This is the second time I remember reading this book aloud to my children in homeschool, but Emma says I read it at least twice just to her, so I must have forgotten some prior readings. And I had forgotten a good 80% of the plot as well, only the bare bones remained in my head. So it was like a brand new reading for me, as well. ;)

I had forgotten that this book must, must, have been written as a Christ-faith-strengthener for children. I confess, I grew a little weary of those parts an...more

I think I must have read Heidi in some format as a youngster- surely everyone did? I've just read Heidi as an adult and it's an interesting and rewarding read. Perhaps not the most exciting action filled children's book ever- but Heidi has a gentle, winning charm that explains her enduring popularity. Heidi is orphaned and at 5 years old she is taken to live with her reclusive, hermit of a grandfather who has broken off all ties with his family and community. He lives at the end of a mountain tr...more

Heidi by Johanna Spyri was written around 1880 and for this reason the wording is very old fashion and stiff to read. Yet, knowing the era the story is set in suits the formal writing. I found it easy to accept and even to ignore.
Heidi is about a young girl who lives in the Swiss mountains. Everyone who meets her falls under her spell as she is a girl of innocence and loves helping people. Her loving nature and giving heart result in people depending on her more than they should.

As a child, I never read this book, although I read and loved many other children's classics, such as Anne of Green Gables. In the past year since I got a Kindle, I have been reading/rereading classics. Because we just went to Switzerland, I was looking forward to reading this book.

I found this book boring and preachy and barely made it through to the end. The characters were tedious and one dimensional and the plot was highly predictable.

The only parts of interest for me we...more

Heidi / by Johanna Spyri
illustrated by Jessie W. Smith

MS- Grades 6-9th and up Rating: *5 [Outstanding!]

Heidi, by Johanna Spyri, opens in the Rhine Valley, near Mayenfeld, Switzerland, with 5 year old Heidi, holding her maternal Aunt Dete's hand, being led up the mountain to her paternal Grandfathers place. Heidi had been orphaned when one year old and had only her Aunt to nurture her thus far, with her only other relative being her Grandfather.

Heidi, like The Secret Garden, which I recently reviewed, is a sort of narrative catharsis perfect for today’s despondent, tree-change inclined city-dweller. Like The Secret Garden, it touches on the power of nature and unencumbered, unfettered living as a way of cleansing the soul and becoming a whole person. But the...more

Heidi....Heidi... akhirnya aku bertemu kembali denganmu.
Soa...more

I liked Heidi's Faith. She tried to always pray each night. Faith is a thing hoped for but not yet seen. For Heidi, this was wanting to go home after being homesick. After a while she stopped praying because she didn't get to go home. I liked how Clara's Grandmama told Heidi that Heavenly Father doesn't always give you what you want when you want it because he has something better for you later on. After her talk with Grandmama she began to pray again, and after a long time was able to go ...more

Sometimes it is hard to rate a book written for children. As a mother, I definitely label this book with five stars - this is the kind of book I want my daughter reading (which she just did). Qualities such as a simple story, simple life, reliance on God, thinking of others before self, a happy ending, and normal struggles among people sets this book apart from the in-your-face-entertain-every-second, crude and disgusting, poorly written series book so often advertised to children.

Here’s my trouble with Heidi. As a child, I loved the movie versions. In the movies, they showed Heidi spending lots of time with her grandfather in the beginning, building a relationship with him, how her presence made him happy, et cetera. In the book I just didn’t “get” that. I felt Heidi’s relationship with the mountains. I felt Heidi’s relationship with Peter and with the grandmother. But with Grandfather? Not so much. Her affection for him was told but not shown. Perhaps the fault...more

As a child I had never been exposed to popular classics which, while unfortunate, means that I now have a horde of great books yet to be discovered. Even so, I did manage to read a heavily abridged version when I was younger. The book also brought back fond memories of the various versions of Heidi I'd watched over the years. It also reinforced my firm belief of books trumping their celluloid counterparts every single time.

Heidi depicts the life of a young girl who is sent to live wit...more

I'll never be able to say how much I love this book. I will say that because of it I had a "Heidi dress" when I was about seven (which I wore until it fell apart), and when I decided to start collecting a Christmas village I chose an Alpine Village. I want to live in this book.

I hadn't read this in a long time, and it was so fun to read it again! I love everything about it--the incredible descriptions, Heidi's excitement over everything from the opening flowers to the sound...more

For some reason, I decided yesterday that I needed to reread this. I know I read it and loved it as a kid, but I did not at ALL remember the heavy handed Christianity that was half the book. I must have zoomed on by it in favor of the nature descriptions.

So, yeah, this was totally a moral tale. And just about everyone, outside of Peter and Uncle Alp, were either nearly perfect or nearly all bad. Heidi just barely managed to not be cloying though - she could be pretty bitchy sometime...more

I don't know why the movie makers have to ruin wonderful stories, but they sure do, as Heidi shows. The movie I recently had a very different feel to it and ddn't seem nearly as positive as this book is. Heidi is a very upbeat book, with much to get out of it. There is strength in the characters in this book. This book expresses very strongly how much influence we have on others. This is shown, not just by how Heidi's love and concern for others uplifts and helps them, but how their love fo...more

My book club reads a children's classic every year in December. This year we chose Heidi by Johanna Spyri. I was pretty excited because I had my mother's copy sitting on my shelf and had not read this book as a child. The story was ok and reflected the times where god and family were valued above all else in people's lives. I found Spyri's descriptions of the mountains, the plants and the people who lived in the alps to be the most interesting and nearly as beautiful as the color illustratio...more

I just finished reading Heidi aloud to the kids. What a sweet story!

Heidi is a happy, optimistic girl. She loves nothing more than being on the mountain, enjoying the flowers and goats, as well as her beloved grandfather and neighbors.

When she is taken away to live in the city with a wealthy family, to keep Clara company, both Heidi and her grandfather are very unhappy. Still, Heidi is able to form a deep friendship with Clara, who is ill and cannot walk.
