Broken Wing was a very good book that kept me turning the pages. The writing style is different than most romances, I felt a little more removed from the characters than normal but it did not take away from my enjoyment of the story. There was a historical fiction feel to the story but there is also a very good romance being told.

Sarah Monroe and her brother travel to France to bring home her younger brother who disappeared five years ago but was recently found in a brothel. They find him relati...more

Why all the hoopla about this book I don’t know. It’s not really a romance novel even though it’s touted as one. It’s almost like an adventure story about a very damaged hero and it is ALL about the hero. The romance is a sub-story. What little steam there is is glanced over like you would find in regular fiction and after the first half of the book the h/h don’t get together until the end –that’s about 200 pages covering the hero and what happens to him –so it’s not a romance for me.

There quit...more

Gabriel is a young man living in complete despair. Since he was given as a very young boy to a French brothel, he has been used – terribly so. Hauntingly so. Heartbreakingly so. The only thing that keeps him going, that keeps him there, is the protection he is giving to a young boy, Jamie. He is terrified that the same thing will be done to the Jamie that was done to him. When he finds out the family, a brother and sister, of Jamie have discovered his whereabouts after years of searching for him...more

This book first appeared on my radar way back when Kristie(j) posted her review then her subsequent quest to get EVERYONE to read it, much like her North & South crusade! I don't know why I didn't read this sooner. Kristie hasn't steered me wrong yet between Ride the Fire, North & South, and the Joss Ware Envy series; I should know by now to read everything Kristie tells me!

I don't know that there's a lot for me to add with all of the amazing reviews of Broken Wing but if you're a girl w...more

This is not what would normally catch my eye. But since it came highly recommened and that it was such a great love story. I had to read it. This book was truly amazing. It tells of one of the greatest love stories I have read in a very long time. From the first page it captured me. The author has done such a degree of research about the time that the writing is nothing but stellar.

I really loved this book and like all my fellow bloggers I highly recommend reading it. The love that Gabriel and S...more

The story didn't captivate me at first and the hero was...quite emotional instead of having the usual hardened and cold demeanor.

So I was a little bit disappointed because I thought he was probably in his thirties and he just didn't act really mature.

But then we find out he's quite young, probably the same age as the heroine (21) because Davey refered to them as children. All was well in my world because this meant we would read about how they fell in love (and it was so sweeeeet!) prior their s...more

Every once in a while, if one is very lucky, they read a romance novel so lyrically written, so wonderfully conceived, so thoroughly researched, so full of interesting and different characters, it practically ruins reading for them for a few days, or weeks, or months. I very much fear that this will be the case for me after reading BROKEN WING by Judith James. I requested this book at the recommendation of KristieJ, a wonderful and s...more

Every now and again a story comes along that pulls at your heart, wrings emotion out of you until nothing is left, defies you to hope for that happily ever after that you take for granted in every romance book you pick up. This is definitely one of those books for me. The fact that this is Ms. James’ debut book makes it all the more special.

The beginning of the book gives us Gabriel realizing his life is about to get worse than it’s ever been. The one person who is his friend in the horrible wor...more

Long drawn-out saga with a lot of tragedy, not enough emotional fulfillment or entertainment for me.

STORY BRIEF:
I have excerpted some the following from Amazon’s Product Description. Gabriel was “abandoned as a child and raised in a brothel, he has never known friendship or affection. Hiding physical and emotional scars behind an icy façade, his only relationship is with a young boy James he has spent the last five years protecting from the brutal reality of their environment. But all that is ab...more

This is a lovely, lovely book, and I devoured it in a greedy gulp. It's a brave book as well, well-written and meticulously researched. The writing is splendid, articulate and elegant. Ms. James has a real gift for painting a picture.

It reminds me of some of the older historicals, sweeping and epic, with plenty of details. I would recommend this book who enjoyed Anita Mills, who has since retired. One of the most moving and unconventional historical romances I ever read was Autumn Rain by Ms. M...more

This is an EPIC story! Not for the faint of heart, don't read this book if you are looking for a lighthearted romance. This story is gritty, dark and in your face and perfect for you if you want a romance full of emotion, angst and forgiveness.

Gabriel is most definitely a broken man coming from dire circumstances and readers will need to be open minded to warm up to this dark hero. It would have been very easy for Mrs. James to make Gabriel's path to love and redemption all roses and wine, but i...more

How wounded does a soul have to be before it is too late to turn it around? The character Gabriel, abused as a child and broken in spirit, takes the reader on a journey of the possibility of love and redemption. But is his psyche too badly bruised to heal? Sarah, strong willed and independent, can see beyond his gruff and emotionally detached manner. When his past comes back to haunt him, she may be the only one who can reach in and grab him back as he slips into an emotional nothingness. The au...more

Was this really published in 2008? That seems so unlikely.

This reads like the epic romances of the late 70s and early 80s-the book is written in a POV that makes everything that happens seem like it's one big montage...lots of telling, not so much showing, time moves forward in leaps and bounds with just the narrator giving you a heads up ("Meanwhile, three months later...").

James was certainly trying to one-up Kinsale's Shadow and the Star and JR Ward's book about Zsadist, and she does. Was it...more

I am going against the tide here when I say I merely liked this book. It was an adequate bit of historical romance.
There are many reviews already out there that can give you chapter and verse on how angsty this book is--It just never grabbed my emotions. I expected to need a whole box of tissues--I shed not a tear. I actually got impatient with Gabriel--enough already with how bad your life was! And how Sarah couldn't understand, shouldn't love him, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah.
Though the emoti...more

I don’t think that I have read a romance quite like Broken Wing where the gentleman has such emotional backstory. This was more of the old-fashioned romance where sex barely touched the page. And the main character was Gabriel – not Sarah – which is surprising since typically the female gets the internal struggle. I had been amazed at how patient Sarah had been as Gabriel tried to push her farther from his ugly history.

Overall I thought Broken Wing too serious for me, not enough lightness (or pi...more

Gabriel St. Croix was abandoned as a child and raised in a brothel where he is forced into prostitution. When a young boy (Jamie) comes to live there, he acts as his protector.

Sarah Munroe has been looking for her younger brother for a long time. When she travels to the brothel to see if the boy is Jamie, she meets St. Croix and Jamie insists that he come home with them. Sarah feels that Gabriel is owed a new start in life at the very least for keeping her brother from being abused.

He enters in...more

I was asked to join the Broken Wing Challenge at Orannia's playground and decided to accept. The challenge was easy, read "Broken Wing" and then write a review. At least, it was supposed to be easy... I find I don't know how to review this book. I will begin with:

Gabriel St. Croix is a broken and tragic character. The degradations he'd faced were horrific and painful to read. The fact that he must cut himself to feel alive is very telling and very sad. He is also a noble character. His need to p...more

Warning this might be the longest review ever…I promise to wake you up when I’m done. Oh and it might be a little tiny bit spoilery, but I’ll keep it as vague as I can!

It took me a while to finish this book. Why? Because halfway through it I had the strange thought ‘Ah, if it ended there it would be a HEA…could be nice!’…after that I had a hard time picking it up again not knowing what drama was going to ruin it all! (but it always does, you know!)...more

Historical romance featuring the tortured and sexually abused hero archetype ... which potentially sets it up for an interesting, psychological exploration of character, but I found it to be more emo and angsty than psychologically revealing, and the ultimate, love- conquers-all resolution too pat for someone as damaged as Gabriel is. His story is emotionally affecting, but I also found the story ventured far too much into sentimental proseland for my tastes (the treacly letters Gabriel and Sara...more

This book was a great surprise, one of those rare treasures that stayed with me long after I finished reading it.
Gabriel St. Croix is not your typical hero. He struggles to survive after being abandoned as a young boy and forced into a life of prostitution. He sees no future for himself. Yet in his despair, he cares for another innocent child, Jamie, whom he protects from the horrors of life in a brothel.
This act of compassion opens the door to a completely different world for Gabriel, one wit...more

I think this was a book that was recommended to me by a cyber pal, Kristie was it you? Anyhow I totally loved it. Gabriel St Croix is a hero to die for, and unusually for me, he was the best thing about the book. A fractured person in so many ways, I really felt he deserved his happy ending. An emotional book that will leave your heart aching, whilst praying for Gabriel to find his soul again. Bloody splendid writing.

You can find my slightly more in-depth review here.

I was disappointed. This title was billed as a new kind of romance novel that offered deep psychological insights along with the purple passion. During the French Revolution, the 20-something romantic hero is rescued by an English family from a Parisian brothel where he was raised from early childhood to pleasure men and women. Under the circumstances, I was expecting a considerable amount of post-traumatic stress syndrome. But an episode of "cutting," a few sulks, and a decanter or two hurled i...more

This seemed a bit unusual, and it certainly was engrossing...but believable? Our hero is badly, badly damaged; our heroine is selfless and therapeutic and--without any knowledge of psychology or trauma or child molestation--always manages to say and do exactly the right thing. Conventions of the time are only noted when it's convient to the plot, otherwise they're ignored (servants? dress codes? propriety?) I guess that's why they call it fiction, and I should climb off my high horse!
The book is...more

“I couldn't return to you, mignonne. I didn't know how. But you will admit, I hope, that for a man who didn't wish to be found I've made quite a spectacle of myself. I wanted you to hear of me. It's why I came from France. I couldn't stop myself. I've waited in dread, wondering if you'd come. I've been terrified you would, and terrified you wouldn't. When I saw you tonight I wanted to weep. I was so grateful you came, but I hated you for it, too, because you made me hope again, as you always have, as you always do. It would have killed me if. . . Ah, Christ, love! You were so angry, so disappointed but you'd waited. I had to know. I had to come because without you I have nothing to believe in, nothing to hope for, and... Oh, God, Sarah, when I got here you were wearing my shirt! I've thought of you, and ached for you, and missed you with every breath. All I know of loving, wanting or need, begins and ends with you. I'm so sorry I hurt you and disappointed you. I pray you can forgive me, Sarah. I need you to hold onto. Without you I find this business of living so very lonely and so very hard."

She threw herself into his arms and he clasped her to him, sobbing with relief and need. "God, how I've missed you, Sarah," he moaned, sliding his cheek up and down against hers, mingling their tears. I'm sorry ... so sorry .. . please forgive me, I.. . "There's nothing to forgive. It wasn't your fault. It doesn't matter, not any of it. All that matters is that you're safe, and well, and back in my arms. Don't be sorry, just hold me, love me.”
