Like Toujours Provence, the chapters of this book are connected by the setting of Provence and by a few recurring characters, but are otherwise independent. This is perfect for a book to be read in bites, like a little slice of reading dessert. Begin with the man power-washing his underwear, then read a few days later about the corkscrew museum; the next day, about Mayle's theories on the life-extending benefits of duck fat and foies gras; the next day, about the many varieties of olive...more

If there's ever a book on French gastronomic delights that can't possibly be missed, it's this book! In Europe, the title for this book is "Bon Apetit" & that was the version I read although the North American version didn't deviate any from the European version of the book. In this book, Mayle documents his travel across the entire country of France to sample each region's particular gourmet specialty or some gastronomic festivity. His account was visually detailed & laced

The author attempts to offer high country class living in the south of France. The author analyses the community too much rather than letting loose. Too prestigious and snobby in my opintion. Peter Mayle meet Rick Steves! Rick really knows how to get down, hang with the locals, and consume cheap eats while enjoying the simplicity of the rustic and bucolic french life.

I can confidently say that this book converted me into a die-hard Mayle fan - this was the first Mayle I read; I went on to read 4 more. It's also a source of delight (and pride) that I"ve converted others as well...

recommends it for:
People who like food, wine, & are interested in the French. You don't need to like them!
This was the again a very fun book by Mayle, it was a good continuation of his adventures in Provence. It is interesting he does some more comparision with the Americans. More detail one wine, food, & truffles.

Anyone with anywhere but here syndrome
This book doesn't have a ton of direction and I'm okay with that. Peter Mayle is witty as ever and holds my attentions easily by talking a lot about one of my favorite subjects; food.

One of the best opening lines I'll ever read, "I think it was the sight of a man power-washing his underpants that really brought home. . . ." To fun. Way too fun!

I reread this book. I love his Provence books so much I'm starting to collect all of his books in hardcopy. They are a reminder of the joy of life.

I didn't quite finish this book. I do that if it doesn't hold my interest. It's good but not the read "A Year in Provence" was. Eh.

I didn't quite finish this book. Unfortunately like many sequels, this one wasn't nearly as good as A Year in Provence.

This book just fun. Easy fireside reading and fun to see how the French in Provence spend their time.
