lovers of French culture; those who enjoy travel writing, food critique
Not what I thought it was going to be. I thought it was just about French culture, but the book solely focused on that oh-so-critical feature of the French which is the gastronomic system. The author deals with topics as varied as snails, frogs' legs, and wines. It is interesting, but not enthralling.

If the goal of this book is to make the reader want to go on a food tour of France, then it 100% succeeded as far as I am concerned. The food descriptions in "French Lessons" were mouthwatering. I never wanted to eat frog legs until I read Mayle's descriptions of their buttery garlicy goodness.

While Mayle tends to recycle some of his material in his books, his crisp writing style and his obvious love for French cuisine (especially the more... adventurous dishes) really makes me wish I had been born outside of the land of fries and burgers and closer to that of frogs and snails.

Recommended because of my culinary interests. I remember waking up one day while reading this book. I was dreaming about eating breakfast. There was course after course being served, one with each time my snooze button went off.

Interesting, but not the thing to read when you're hungry; you'll get drool all over. Unfortunately, when we were in France, we didn't try any of the crazy food he wrote about. Although I did have some amazing lavendar icecream.

I loved this book. If you like eating or drinking wine, you must read this. I will be re-reading this book. It caused me to want to read everything Peter Mayle has written.

Peter Mayle does a great job of transporting the reader to small French villages to experience rare events. I want to go on vacation just thinking about this book.

This is a wonderful book that describes food/wine and festivals of food and wine. It makes me want to go to discover France for myself.

each chapter is a tongue in check vignette about a different gastronomical festival in France, seen through the eye of the British author

I thought this would be more interesting?
The public library is definitely running out of books I want to read. HELP!

This guy has a great eff'ing life. It made me hungry for my great-grandpa's sauteed frog legs.
