Dash really likes this one -- especially when Dad adds extra animal sounds.

Yet another book my children would rate as amazing. This one has been a staple in our home forever. In fact, it became so worn from page turning, the binding gave in and we had to go purchase a new one. My eldest son delighted in finding the butterflies on each page and identifying all species of animals and yes, counting the miniscule bats flying out of the barn. Now, my youngest son is the one to be enthralled with this book - he loves looking for mice. A simple, sweet and gentle book to ...more

This Margaret Wise Brown book depicts a farm full of animals who "play all day in the grass and in the hay" and then bed down for the night in the Big Red Barn "while the moon sailed high in the dark night sky." It's lovely and gentle, and the illustrations are delightfully detailed (you can make out a Snoopy pail overturned near "where the children play" and the mama animals nurse the babies. These days, I much prefer to read this at bedtime than the played-out Goo

This book is built from a long, beautiful poem about farm life enhanced by adorable and engaging illustrations. It's been a favorite with my kids forever. Both of them had it mostly memorized by the age of 2 1/2, and we take turns reciting it together. The author has a solid understanding of what will hold a child's interest, and a good instinct for language.

okay, i don't understand what the draw of this book is, but it's like crack for babies. it was given to us by my cousin and my daughter immediately fell in love. we gave it as gifts to various friends and we've heard the same deal. my daughter actually WORE OUT her board book, and she's not rough with books. it's crazy, but whatever it is, it works.

I saw Margaret Wise Brown's name on this book of my baby nephew's and had to pick it up. While I prefer the art on classic Goodnight Moon, this is a very cute little farm picture book. It teaches many different kinds of critters, ends with going to sleep (helpful hint for listening kiddos!) and is written beautifully to read aloud.

I decided to add my favorite children's books! The ones that I can't get enough of and would read over and over and over until the cows come home,
Big Red Barn is probably my all time favorite book of my girls. The pictures are wonderful but the verses just make me so happy and serene. The girls both have loved this book as much as I have.

I'm going to be the dissenter here and say that I really can't stand the poetry of this book. In my opinion anyone with a high school education could write poetry as good or better than this. Felicia Bond's illustrations are magnificent, but reading this book I felt that she had stooped too low to illustrate such horrible poetry.

My one-year-old loves this book. He picks it out of the hundreds of books on the shelf, brings it to me and says, "me, me" several times a day. We make all of the animal noises and he gets a real kick out of. It's the perfect book to get toddlers interested in reading.

The pictures and writing are clear. The animals are all here including the mouse. Calm and reassuring like all Margaret's books. Little ones love to read it over and over (and make all the animal sounds).

We haven't found a Margaret Wise Brown book that we haven't liked. But this one is top on our list! It's great to read as a bedtime story because the last few pages show the sky darkening and the animals heading to the barn to sleep.

Another lovely, non-pabulum poem from Margaret Wise Brown. I'm quite convinced that books like this are what keep the English language alive, as they expose the smallest humans to the beauty of specific words and rhythms.

Nice illustrations plus Brown's wonderful, lilting style of poetry. My boys don't find it as captivating and satisfying as her Sailor Dog. They definitely prefer it over Goodnight, Moon.

Another Elliot favorite. Any time we can make animal sounds is a good time and a good book. This is about an every other day book, although we've read it going on 3 days in a row now before bed.

We love to read this book and have Grady point out all the animals. It was with this book that his first word (woof woof) came out!

I don't know why exactly, but this seems to be my favorite of all kids books. I have loved it with all three, and have memorized it by now. It is very sweet and simple.
