When I started to read this book i thought it was going to be some old western with good guys trying to kill the bad guys but it wasn't, it was about how a teenager who got this marvelous present and didn't obey when he had to be back to the wagons and paid the consequences. My favorite part of the book was when Mr. Tucket was sneaking up on the antelope and when he didn't expect then there he stood up and there they were. My favorite character is the Mountain Man because he knows how the land w

GENRE: Fiction, adventure, western, historical fiction elements.
SUMMARY: It's 1848, and Francis just celebrated his fourteenth birthday. He was part of a wagon train headed to Oregon, and thought he would spend some time shooting his new rifle. Next thing Francis knows, he's been kidnapped by some Pawnee Indians, and one of the elderly Indian women acts like he is her son. He sees his chance to escape weeks later, when a one-armed beaver trapper (Mr. Grimes) rides into camp to trade More...

I found MR. TUCKET an intriguing book, though I think that the characters could have been developed a bit better.
I think that the book focuses around two main (and interconnected) ideas. I think that the two ideas both have to do with people's relationships. I think that the relationship between Mr. Tucket and Mr. Grimes is an important one. Also, I believe that the relationship between the the white people and the Native Americans is an important relationship that the author ch More...

I found this book very interesting. Its about this boy Francis Tucket and he is travling with his family and other people out west to settle there. Francis got a new gun for his birthday and he was walking behind the caravan and shooting at some cacti. Well, he fell behind a little too much, and some indians kidnaped him. He was held prisoner for a few days untill a trader saw him in the indian camp. That night he rescued Francis, and together they rode to try to find Francis' family. The trade

I really enjoyed this book. The story is of a young boy, Francis Tucket, who is traveling west with his family. After receiving a rifle for his birthday, he lags behind the wagon train to test it out. He is captured by Indians and is forced to live in their camps until Mr. Grimes comes through and helps him to escape. The rest of the story is about how Mr. Grimes makes a man out of 'Mr. Tucket'. Lots of adventure and plenty of off the wall humor as well.

Pros: A good read with depth. Great for any age - young or old.
Cons: It is short.
I never thought that I would be saying this about a historical friction. It's so good that I wish I owned all the books.
The particular Book that I am talking about is Mr. Tucket by Gary Paulsen. But really, the fact is, I used to hate history class. And this guy got me to be sucked into a story that involves history. It didn't seem possible to me before my oldest sister challenged More...

This book had a lot of the same elements that made Hatchet great: themes of change, growth, and growing up. It also has the limitless adventure potential of the mid-1800s American West, and sets the action against a realistic historical backdrop. Native Americans are treated as a real threat to the westward moving settlers, but shown as real people with understandable responses and motivations. And the farmers were not portrayed as entirely innocent either. This book was an action-packed, enjoya

I truly enjoyed reading this series to my boys 8 and 10. (I don't know about your kids, but even though this is on their reading level, it is more fun to hear mom read it). We read these months ago so I don't have all the specifics and I'm sure everyone else's reviews are much more cogent than mine, but I loved the self-sufficient kid(s), the non-Disney approach to life, and the historical context. In the series some books are stronger than others, but for this demographic these books are a wi

Frances Tucket is given a rifle for his 14th birthday. The same day he is taken captive from his wagon train by Pawnee Indians. Weeks later, in the Pawnee village, Frances meets Mr. Grimes a one-armed trapper who helps him escape. The two delay returning to Frances to his family because of the on-coming winter. Frances learns many skills from Mr. Grimes, but he begins to question if the trapper's lifestyle is for him when Mr. Grimes goes for revenge against the Pawnee for the death of a frie

I thaought the book was really great. It's about a boy named Francis Tucket, in the early 1800's, who had celebrated his 13th birthday, and got a rifle. He goes out at night to try it out. when he goes back he discovers that the wagon train had left him behind. He goes on an adventure to get back with the train. During the book Francis gets captured and all worn out during the wild adventure through the Oregon trail.

I went into this book thinking it would be okay, but it ended up being really really great! The action wasjust perfect and the plot and story made me laugh and frown, leap with joy and even feel involved in the setting and the characters. I felt bad for both Tucket and his friend. The end made me teary, so have one tissuse by your side. But yet the ending makes you fell proud and confident that Tucket did the right thing.

I read this book when I was in fourth or fifth grade and loved it! Even though I cannot remember all of the plot, I remember connecting strongly with whatever the boy "Mr. Tucket" felt. I specifically recall a moment in the story when he was facing hunger; I went to the fridge for some milk, poured it into a jar, took a big gulp for "sustenance," and dove right back in. Good stuff.

Here's what Cheyanna C. had to say about this book:
Overview: It's about a boy named Francis Tucket. he is kidnapped by Pawnees and rescued by a mountain man named Jason Grimes.
This book ROCKS because: It's exciting, adventureous, and historical. It's really a great book!

This was suggested by H's school librarian since we enjoyed the new "True Grit" movie. I read it aloud to him over several weeks at bedtime. Love the characters and note that, in the end, Mr. Grimes is not as civilized as Rooster Cogburn!

This is a new series, for me, from Gary Paulsen. This series is about a young man who gets captured from a wagon train by indians and then escapes with a one armed mountain man. The mountain man teaches Tuckett how to survive.

We listened to this on a Boy Scout trip to Bent's Fort and the entire car, ages 11-16, enjoyed it. The history made the fort more enjoyable. Later Andrew and I listened to the next 4 books in the series as well.

This was a book I read with my daughter's 6th grade class. It was a really good story about a boy that gets seperated from his family on the wagon trail and his capture and escape from the indians.
