I read this to familiarize myself with another popular fiction author. Not nearly as insulting as the Stuart Wood's thriller that I read, but still a pandering, quasi-intellectual thriller that annoyed me. It basically consisted of a female deputy stumbling into a crime scene, trying to escape the bad guys who figure out her tricks, who set up new ones to trap her. She figures the traps out, avoids them and sets up a new tricky escape. Wash, rinse, repeat. This happens over and over to the ...more

> A great story about a deputy sheriff who heads out to check out a 911 call from a lakeside cabin… The narrative has credibility, tension, character development, nice descriptive phrasing, plot twists and, gives attention to detail. What’s not to love? Well, for one thing, what appeared to be interesting and maybe even useful “bushman lore” needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I started researching compasses and discovered that compass (and map) reading is a skill that you need to...more

There's a home invasion in a vacation home in Lake Mondac, Wisc. The homeowner calls 911 but doesn't get off the full message.
The sheriff's dept. sends Brynn McKenzie to investigate. When she arrives, there are dead bodies at the home and she barely escapes the killers. There was a houseguest, Michelle, and she apparently wounded one of the killers and escaped. Then she shot the tires of the cars in the driveway to prevent their departure.

This was the first Jeffery Deaver book that I have read, and it will definitely not be the last. I found myself engrossed in this book from the beginning, and I did not want to put it down. I enjoyed the suspenseful storyline, and was surprised by a couple of unexpected plot twists. Brynn McKenzie was a great heroine, a strong, resilient sheriff's deputy whose intrepid acts in her professional environment do not carry over into her personal life. I also enjoyed the character of Brynn's husban...more

The Bodies Left Behind, by Jeffrey Deaver, A. narrated by Holter Graham, produced by Simon and Schuster Audio, downloaded from audible.com.
Brynn is a deputy sheriff of a county in rural Wisconsin. She is a workaholic, tied totally to her job. She has a son whom she spoils out of guilt for spending so much time at work, and a husband who she doesn’t pay enough attention to. One day, Brynn is sent to a house where someone had tried to send a 911 call. As she pulled up to the hou...more

This is a pretty good thriller that manages to stretch out to great lengths a pretty simple story of a deputy trying to evade hired killers in a Wisconsin state park in the middle of the night off-season, while toting along a city-princess who was a witness to the killings the killers did earlier in the evening. One twist leads to another in a fairly enjoyable read, but the author's propensity to use contractions to indicate "normal, everyday speech" gets annoying really fast "Wil...more

Although I liked the book, I still prefer his Lincoln Rhymes books.
It took me a while to get into this book and almost 2/3 through to like the main character Brynn McKenzie. Brynn is a police officer sent to investigate a 911 call at a secluded vacation home, she finds the owners shot to death and then she evades the killers accompanied by Michelle the couples week-end guest. The first 2/3 of the book have Brynn and Michelle and the killers play cat and mouse through the forest. I rath...more

A couple is murdered in a remote lake house in Wisconsin, obviously by professionals. A female Deputy Sheriff answering an aborted 911 call comes across the crime shortly after the killings. She evades two of the culprits by going into the forest where she finds a woman that witnessed the killings. Her cat and mouse game with the villains, some Meth manufacturers, a Union Boss, the FBI and the State Police coupled with her marital confusion all make for great reading. The story is almost all...more

I really enjoyed this book on CD. It kept your attention and had a good number of surprises along the way. Some of the characters are not whom they seem but you may not know this until near the end of the book. It was supposedly set in central WI and I found some of the local references interesting. I also like that the main character was female and a very capable person. I listened to this mainly while I was working out at the gym and it certainly made the time go faster and be much more enjoya...more

I like Jeffery Deaver, but I prefer the Lincoln Rhyme novels - I like the relationships between the character which evolve over the series. That said, I was a bit our of Deaver-reading practice when I started this one, and forgot to be on the lookout for his trademark plot-twists. So I was perhaps a bit slower on the uptake on some of the surprises, but, hey - that's fun, right? And I have to admit that there was at least one twist I wouldn't have gotten, no matter how alertly I was reading. So,...more

When a young couple is murdered in their remote lakeside retreat during an apparent home invasion, the husband manages to make a partial 911 call. The small town sheriff's department thinks the call is just a mistake but sends Depty Brin Mackenzie to check it out just in case. Brin ends up in a life and death struggle with the two hitmen as they try to out maneuver each other in the rugged terrain Northern Wisconsin.

I was so disappointed in this book. It was boring, dragged on, and if it weren't for one plot twist, would have been a total loss of hours. I started getting irritated at his overusage of the word "grimace" and it grated me every time I stumbled over it.
This book is not the Jeffery Deaver I know and love. Come back, please!

Jeffery Deaver did a great job developing the characters for this novel. I really liked Brynn's character...she isn't the perfect heroine. She has a troubled marriage, a troubled teen and a secret that could put her and her ex-husband in jail. Hart, the killer, is a real jerk but he has integrity which I found odd but it made him human and almost likable. On the other hand, I didn't like Michelle from the get go. Something seemed off with her bitchy stuck-up character.

When I heard JD was writing another book in 2008, I was very excited. Also hearing it was a standalone was a bonus because I have enjoyed his past ones alot. After reading the synopsis, I was eager to read it to see how Brynn McKenzie's dilemma would turn out.
About 1/3 of the way into the book, I did think to myself that this book seems like a typical cat-n-mouse chase book and perhaps he did rush through it to finish another book in 2008. Yet always in the back of my mind with a JD ...more

Although I am a Jeffery Deaver fan, and have thoroughly enjoyed the many other books he has written, this story fell flat. I got none of the tension, conflict, and fine character development of his other books. What happened? Though tense situations were set up, and the protagonist put in terrible danger, caring about her just didn't get across. The villains are one-dimensional, the soap-opera subthemes of the protagonist's family life are poorly described and provide no power either. I rem...more

I've always been a Deavers fan
I've always liked Deaver's books, he is the one secular author that I can't give up. I especially love the Lincoln Rhyme Series. My favorite book of his is the Bone Collector and I KNEW when I read it was movie material!
About this book, I love the information about the area in which the book was set. I was a bit disappointed about the ending (maybe I missed something?), but I'm going to read it again after my husband and see if I get a different feel.

An exciting book that takes you on a whirlwind trek thru the forest and mountains. Brynn, a county deputy makes a call to a remote area off the beaten track. She discovers 2 bodies and gets shot by one of the murderers. After escaping fins Michelle, a friend of the 2 dead people.
To escape the killers they gp into the forest and look for an escape route.
I enjoyed the book very much as I enjoy twists and turns in the story,
This novel deliverfs.

Jeffery Deaver has always been one of my favorite authors so I had high expectation for this book. The book was well written, what Jeffery Deaver book is not however it was not his best work. It does not even come close to being as good as any of the Lincoln Rhyme books. I got bored during certain parts of the book, but the ending was very suspenseful.

I'm sorry, but when I'm saying to a character very early in the book, "Oh no, you didn't!", it already puts the book in a bad light for me. The main character was stupid and did not receive the proper repremand she deserved for things she did. I like Jeffery Deaver, but for the huge plot flaws, I couldn't even give him 3 stars. I was very disappointed, and I don't comment very often about the books I read.

Brynn McKenzie, a deputy police officer in a rural Wisconsin town, is called upon to investigate a questionable 911 call. She travels to an isolated home at the edge of the Marquette State Park, a huge area, with thick forests, lakes, streams and formidable cliffs. When she arrives at the home, she is confronted with a bloody murder scene and worse. Her problems have barely begun!
