This book was the winner in a 3-day novel contest, which makes its quality and poetic narrative more impressive.

It's 1968, and when the Soviet Union invades Czechoslovakia, a civil servant finds himself in charge of signing off on all of the arrest warrants of anyone who opposes the regime. At first he struggles with self-preservation, but then he moves toward his humanity. Finding ways to save people if he can, and finally, save the life of one woman.
