Age: YA

Genre: Graphic Novel

Diversity: belief

Illustrations: Bold black and white illustrations that complement and expand on the text.

Personal Response: Reading this novel reminded me why I am not a huge fan of the graphic novel format, I get confused. While I think that the story was well done in a way that might draw in interest of young adults I found it hard to follow the panels in the correct order.

Curriculum: This book would ma...more

I usually do not like abridged books, I feel the original full text should be read and savoured, not a shortened and edited text.

That being said, it is important for teens who read the manga versions of Shakespeare to realize that what they are reading is a summarized version. Hopefully the manga adaptation will get teens to seek out the real thing.

I have not seen "Julius Caesar" in a live performance and I have a belief that Shakespeare is to be enjoyed in th...more

I'm not a big fan of Julius Caesar to begin with so I hoped maybe I'd like it better as manga but I have to give this one thumbs down. Didn't like the artwork or the story adaptation. It felt disjointed and the narrative was difficult to follow. I think too much of the play was cut out. Julius Caesar without the politics: why bother? And where was Cinna the poet? The only scene in the play I really like and not a sign of it.

The artwork was beautiful but I struggled at points to tell characters apart (all tall with fabulously chiselled faces and spectacularly spiky hair). Still, a classic tale told at a brisk pace and a nice marriage between illustration and poetry.

This review is of the Manga Shakespeare edition of Julius Caesar (The original play gets a solid 5 stars)

I know these comic book versions of Shakespeare are supposed to be an easier introduction to Shakespeare for kids that may find the original text inaccessible... but if I had not been so familiar with the original, this book would have been completely incomprehensible. The art made it difficult to identify the different characters, so it ended up being difficult to figure out quit...more

Really did not enjoy this manga at all.
I am a Shakespeare fan, but the art work in the book was severely lacking and did not grab my attention at all.
For such a short book I really struggled to finish it!

Didn't like the artwork, it seemed messy and the characters were hard to keep straight. I like Emma much better for manga. Not my fave.

I will mention this book in the chapter I am writing. It would be unfair to the publisher and editors to say more here.

While I don't particularly like this play to begin with, I did enjoy this edition. The artwork gave the brutality of the story an extra dimension; oddly, this made it a little more palatable to me as I'd always thought this was a rather brutal play.
I haven't read any of Shakespeare's plays in many years, so reading these manga editions seems a little like reading them for the first time all over again. I'm rather excited for the next one.

Of course, not every line from the original play is in this book. Even so, the drawings are entirely in black and white and they do not help the reader to understand the story line. While the idea is good, it has certainly missed the mark.
