Ruddy is disappointed when his parents go on a cruise and he must stay with his fussy grandmother for a whole week, but an unexpected snowstorm reveals a surprising side of Grandmother Silk.

Quick and easy read for middle readers, however, the story was bland and slow to climax. The watercolor illustrations are well-drawn adding much needed excitement. The author uses a convincing characterization that is mostly a tale of two people who think they aren't alike at all-until they have no choice but...more

When energetic eight-year-old Ruddy gets snowed in with his aloof, elegant Grandmother Silk, the two very different people get to know and like each other during their time of enforced isolation. A sweet story about a boy and his grandmother learning to relate to each other and survive through a snowstorm, this chapter book is perfect for transitional readers. Warmly illustrated.

After reading the first paragraph of Yolanda's Genius, by Carol Fenner, I want to read everything she's written. This book has quite a different style, and is written for a much younger reader. Ruddy, the point-of-view character, is disappointed that he must spend 10 days with his Grandmother, who doesn't seem to have any skills kids might like, while his parents are on a cruise. This was a Gryphon Award Honor book in 2004.
It would work well as a read-aloud for parents of young children who would like a contemporary chapter book. The format and white space would work well for readers who need help transitioning to longer chapter books.

A cozy read for snowy day. Understated and simple, this story sweetly caputres a budding realtionship btween a young boy and his distantly proper grandmother.

Sweet little book about a stuffy, wealthy grandmother that surprises her grandson with her resourcefulness when a blizzard causes them to lose electricity and spend a couple of days together in the dark and cold.

Beautiful illustrations. I loved the storyline of this book. The grandmother and the grandson needed to count on eachother for survival and refined their relationship.

Ruddy is not thrilled to learn that he will be visiting his grandma for ten days. Snow hits and alters Halloween plans, surprisingly for the better.

I loved this! It was so super cute -- a bit of an adventure, a story about a grandmother and a grandson becoming friends.
Laura
Cute book! I love that it isn't just about the boy learning about life but the Grandmother too!
