On its own - as a novel geared for an younger audience and having an interesting story - this book isn't a bad read. However, as part of the VCA collection, it is unacceptable. Mr. Neiderman should have written this series under his own name, or under a different nom de plume to attract a younger crowd. This does not even begin to compare to the Dollanganger or Casteel series, and is a far cry from even the recently-published-before-this Logan series.

So far I am on the second book of the mini orphan series. Butterfly has been the best book I've ever read since I was born. I highly recomend this book to any who likes a twist. If you are the peppist girl or boy in the world I suggest you go for something happy like How I changed my life by todd strasser. Butterfly is about an orphan who is adopted by celine and sanford. Her mom was injured in a car accident and could no longer live her dream. Celine adopted butterfly to live her dream. Which w...more
The only life that 12 year old Janet has ever known is being in an orphanage. Small for her age and timid, nicknamed Butterfly, she has given up hopes of ever finding parents to adopt and love her. However she dares to dream that the beautiful couple Mr Sanford & Celine Delorice will be the family she always wanted. Sanford is well known and respected in the community and makes the arrangements for Janet to be taken from the orpanage the same day. Celine, once a famous ballerina, is in a whe...more
"Butterfly" is the first novel in the "Orphans" mini-series, which consists of four novellas and ends with the full-length novel "Runaways". Even though this series seems to be aimed towards even younger girls than Andrews' other novels, this book was actually pretty decent and showed more themes and issues than incest and sexual assault. Yay!

The first three-fourths were pretty decent trashy gothic horror, but then it's like the ghost writer suddenly realized she only had 25 pages to wrap things up. A couple of dangling plot threads are resolved in single sentences, and the overall conflict ends practically with a deus ex machina. I went, "Wait, that's it?" Very unsatisfying.
I grabbed this book on a whim when I was at the library, having heard so many great things about VC Andrews in the past. I enjoyed the book, but it's not among my favorites. I thought the ending was abrupt, forced and not at all what I expected. I'm not quite sure that she's an author I will continue to read, despite having the next 3 books of the series sitting here, waiting for me.

The orphans series is a wonderful drama series by vc andrews. she knows how to twist a tail of deception lies lust love drama sadness fear and many other emotions. you will know the main character as if she was you... quite enjoyable!
VC Andrews has always been a favorite of mine since my childhood days. I have read (and re-read) all of her books, and although I am much older now and find that some of her work is better than others, I still enjoy the twists and turns, strangeness and mystery that continues to captivate my interest.
With that being said - it might also explain why I find the ghostwriter's quality of work lacking and less memorable than Andrews true writing, especially with the newer, more modern series.

Ending sucked
Butterfly was the orphan that inspired the most sympathy in me.
First off, she was more or less forced into dancing ballet (she was only adopted for her body structure) but to top it all off, her instructor decides to rape her one day. (Typical V C Andrews plot, btw).
I was dancing ballet myself while I read this book, so Butterfly certainly felt like a kindred spirit to me back then. I think today I would just be fed up with her insipid-ness and vulnerability. xD
