This book looks at the Greek Orthodox Church in the years leading up to the Turkish conquest of Constantinople until the Greek War of Independence in the 19th century. It was interesting, and I learned a lot, being interested in Byzantium, but not knowing much about its religious aspects. The book focuses on the period before the Turkish conquest, and then discusses the changes that occurred afterwards. The book I am reviewing is The Great church in Captivity by Steven Runciman. The book was published by Cambridge University Press in1968. The book covers the history of the Greek Church, pacifically the Patriarchate of Constantinople, from the fall of Constantinople to the Greek war for independence.
