I wanted to give this book 3 1/2 stars because it was better than a 3, but I reserve 4's for books I really like a lot (I rarely give 5's--that's for beautifully written classics like Pride and Prejudice). Scholarly books are hard for me to rate because I'm not an expert. Anyway, I learned a ton from this book, but it's not masterfully written (very few academic books are.)I've read a lot of Margaret Barker, and so I'm familiar with many of the themes she brings up, but there was plenty of new m ...more

Whoa! This one blew me away. She's definitely got some magic. A few other things too, and I wouldn't necessarily bring this title up in mixed ecclesial company. Still, for those who can read it within the bounds of orthodoxy, there's much reward here.

She read theology at the University of Cambridge, England, and went on to pursue her research independently.
