After reading Roses, I was in the mood for another fairy tale retelling, and grabbed this from my book shelf. Jessica is the typical white as snow, red as blood, black as night daughter of a Welsh duke, who's mother died at her birth. The evil stepmother is more of a mad scientist, with a touch of magic thrown into her inventions. The one contrived note is when Jess is punished when a duke assaults her in the stables (because of course she was running wild before her coming out) by being forced ...more

This was really quite interesting. It's a blend of fantasy and science fiction, magic spells intersecting with electricity and chemicals. Jessica is a Welsh duchess whose stepmother tries every way to have an heir of her own, with many cruel and unusual scientific experiments. After Jessica is nearly killed, she runs away to London where she meets up with five human-animal hybrids and they hide away for years. It follows Snow White pretty well, obviously, but with such creative twists that I co...more

Man! I wish you could do half stars on here. I would probably give three and a half. I thought this was a really interesting retelling of Snow White- it made the whole evil stepmother thing more interesting. I loved the Victorian science / mysticism elements and the "Lonely Ones" she meets up with- a total twist on the dwarfs. I like the whole Once Upon a Time series- it is neat to see how fresh fairy tales can be and how many different takes there are on these familiar stories.

This is a good retelling. It takes place in 19th century England which is a favorite place/period of mine. Was a good page turner and not juvenile. I pick books out of the young adult section so I won't come across really foul language or sex, and I find the books to still be entertaining. I'm actually thinking about making a list of all the "grown-up" books I have had to quit reading or wish that I hadn't.

I think this is my least favorite of the "once upon a time" series. I think it was a little too original for me. I love the story of snow white, and this was a little strange. I did love the individual characters though. Maybe "Fairest" will be a little more of what I expected (I hear this is another version of Snow White by the same author who did "ella enchanted"!)

I thought that this book was interesting, though I read it fairly quickly. My first step into the "Once Upon a Time" series, and I really did enjoy it. The twists were intriguing and fresh, and though located in the "romance" section of my library, the romantic part of it was hardly what I would call "overwhelming." I thought it was a good find.

i really enjoyed the alternate ending to this book. i was a little confused as to why there was only 5 dwarves (which bothered me much more than the change in ending... i'm not sure why). i also liked the touch of a glass cabinet for a "coffin" for the sleeping Snow. overall, it was a good read.

I adore how the author took the idea of Snow White, but then made her story completely original. The characters were wonderful, as well as the twists and turns of the plot. This started me on the "Once Upon a Time" series which takes a fairy tale and makes you fall in love all over again.

While a very intriguing version of this old classic fairytale, the author left lots of loose threads untied. For example, is Raven going to keep aging as fast as an animal and Snow stay forever young? Is she going to be able to keep her Prince Charming?

This was also one of the OUAT shorties that I really liked - an interesting twist on our Snow White story, and not one that made me go, "What the heck!?" I've said why I feel so strongly one way or the other on these retellings, so I'll leave it at that.

This is a really weird story with an even stranger ending. There is not much you would recognize from the well-known version...not even any dwarfs! Still, it was an interesting tale; there are a few "questionable" parts, though nothing "R" rated.

I really like this retelling of Snow White. Although it was a dark story, I still enjoyed it. I like the twist with the dwarfs(lonely ones). Would have like to have had a better ending wrapup, still well written and kept my interest.

I finally read this one!!!! (It's pretty interesting to read a snow white revisit when you're attempting to revisit it already! I realized that a lot of things between hers and mine are similar!!!! but I liked this book...

Retelling of Snow White.
A very good book that I couldn't put down-the stepmother is insane, she wants to give the duke a heir. But she can't, so she turns to "science"- a mix of magic, intelligence, and pure insanity.

I admit I was a little confused with the idea of the "dwarfs" in the story, I wasn't entirely sure what they were but after I caught on it got better. The ending is unexpected but a cute story of Snow White nonetheless.

This retelling is odd. It's part science fiction part fairy tale. There are no dwarves but a group of half-humans that help snow. The wicked step mother is truly a witch obsessed with staying young. Not my favorite.

this is one of the most tedious books I have read in a long time. I hated what the author did to this fairytale. It disturbed me and I didn't like it at ALL!!!!

And the point of this book is...? It had little or no similarities to Snow White, in my opinion. Kind of a strange story with a pointless ending.

A good retelling of Snow White, and the main character's real name is Jessica! I liked how there was less magic, and more science.
