I enjoy reading about British Kings and Queens and thought I would enjoy this book about the Queen Mother. What a disappointment. It was like reading a boring textbook in school. Lots of historical dates and facts but the story was told in such a dry, dull and boring manner. I could only read a bit a time and I would put it away and read something else, and go back to it later. I have never taken so long to read a book in my entire life! It should have taken no more than 2 weeks, but I was ...more

Unlike the previous biography of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother that I tried reading, this one has no discernible bias at all, either for or against its subject. Oddly, this gives it a rather impersonal feel, and I finished it without gaining any real sense of what the person (as opposed to the icon) was actually like. However, the author's deadpan style hides an entertaining degree of snarkiness.

Early life

She was born in Rhyl, Flintshire, Wales, the younger child of an Anglican clergyman, who had lost his faith and used the parish magazine to celebrate the Soviet persecution of the Russian church.[1] He also sexually abused her.[1] Her father frequently changed his parish, so, consequently, she attended numerous schools. She left University College, London,[2] after only one year.[1]
