A thoroughly satisfying ending to the Sons of Destiny series. All the loose ends are tied up, all the prophecies fulfilled, even the Gods are on their side... But [consider this a whine:] couldn't we have a few more stories - just to see what happens now?

Sons of Destiny
1. The Sword (2007)
2. The Wolf (2007)
3. The Master (2007)
4. The Song (2008)
5. The Cat (2008)
6. The Storm (2008)
7. The Flame (2008)
8. The Mage (2009)

The Mage is the last enstallment in Jean Johnson's Sons of Destiny series. (For those of you who haven't yet read anything by Jean, that means it is the 8th [and last:] book in this series.)

The Sons of Destiny is about 8 brothers, mages (think wizards in another universe). The brothers were exiled to live on an island all alone. Seven books later and 7 out of the 8 brothers is happily married. The island is now filled with people, and the family is making the island an ind More...

I have slogged through the good, the bad, and the ugly of Jean Johnson's Sons Of Destiny series just because I had to read Morg's story. The polite, charming, nearly all-powerful matchmaking mage of the cursed eight Nightfall brothers. Some in the series I liked, some I tolerated, and some I loathed. But I have to admit I was not disappointed with The Mage. Sometimes looking so forward to a book is just setting yourself up for a let down, but I was happy with Morg's destiny. And while Morga More...

This book suffers from an identity crisis. It's not a good romance (the hero and heroine have been courting for the last 7 books - their romance is overshadowed by all the loose ends that are tied up to end the series) and it's not a good fantasy story either (very predictable).

However, it was nice to see Morganen get his happy ending.

I was excited to read Morg and Hope's story but I was a little disappointed with it.

The author spent a lot of time tying up loose ends in the series and less time directly focused on the eighth brother.

Kelly makes me want to scream. I feel like she's elitist and annoying. I wouldn't want her to be my queen. But still I like the idea of what Kelly represents. The otherworldly queen who rules without magic and yet is fair and brings forth different ideas in which to rule.

This is the last in a series about 8 brothers finding love. What I really liked about this series was the world it was set in. It was almost like the olden days in our times, but with magic. It was intersting to see how they would take things from our time and modify them to be made with magic. The whole convecation was interesting, along with finding out about Hope's past. I think my favorite part was the marriage ceremony at the end. The whole "new Nightfall" vows are just what More...

The final book in the Brothers of Destiny and it was a let down after a 7 book build up. I can't believe I read the whole series. The writing needed an editor who understands the concept of split infinitives. My daughter and I had a riot parsing the following sentence from page 86 - - "The Darkhanan Witch looked much like she always did, her blonde hair plaited into a coronet on her head and the hooded, black, deep-sleeved robe draped over her shoulders that she always wore, regardless o More...

This is the last book in the series and one I was looking forward to as the theme of Morganen and his Destined Bride has been a recurrent idea throughout the other 7 books. Whilst I did enjoy it , I found my attention wandering early on as the couple get together nearly immediately so there is little anticipation on that level. There are other twists in the storyline which I didn't completely anticipate so having persevered I found myself rooting for the Corvis family to win through! By the e More...

A mostly satisfying end to the series. Although Morganen already had chosen his bride in earlier books, this began with a surprise about Hope, which added a little more flavor to the story. After a very promising beginning, it bogged down a little as Hope was established as a chocolatier - interesting details about the making of chocolate, but would a woman really give a 'lecture' on how chocolate is made while she's trying to seduce her guy?!

It was nice to see Consus continue as 'th More...

I was looking forward to this book due to Morganen- the polite, charming, and nearly all-powerful matchmaking mage of the cursed 8 Nightfall brothers. I was not disappointed. Morg was done justice in his installment; as well as, Hope. She is my favorite "destined" bride, and had the best back story. It was also good to get to the whole Nightfall-as-independent nation theme.

Like chocolate, this series has ranged from the sweetness of milk chocolate to the intensity of dark More...

This was the final story about the eight Brothers of Nightfall. There was a surprising secret revealed about Hope. She was the destined bride for Morg.

Finally, Morganen. Hope's past is out of left field, surely, but wonderfully blended so it doesn't seem too unreal.

The final book of Jean Johnson's Sons of Destiny series. A good conclusion to a great series, but rather predictable.

I was really satisfied at how the saga wrapped up. To see Morganen fight for Hope. The convocation of the Gods was as interesting as I hoped. I love this series!

I thought the twist Johnson gave the relationship between Hope and Morg was just enough to keep it from being boring, but my favorite part of the book is the Convocation of the Gods. I love the idea of it and I love what actually happened in the book. Johnson does have a tendency to go overboard with the technical explanations, as if she wants to prove she knows what she's talking about, but again, her world-building skills are excellent. All the loose ends are tied up and it's certainly a satis More...

3.5 stars. Actually, I read half, skimmed, and read the end. I was just bored with the series. The brothers are great characters, there just is something missing that makes the series lacking. They don't suck you in, are not engaging. Plus, I hit my Kelly limit, and as Hope is Kelly's "best" friend, it made it harder for me to like her. Since Hope and Morg get together in the beginning, it leaves the plot with the burden of capturing the reader, and the plot line in the series has alwa More...

I liked it. Though I did not like that Kor's wedding was all but ignored. Except for the fact that they mentioned in the end that he had married and was in his wife's land now.

I am kind of excited that it seems like she might write more of the verse.

I still say The Storm was the best. Rydan is still my favorite brother and Arora is still my favorite wife.

I'll probably re-read their story the most. I'm still going to re-read the rest, The Song, The Cat, The St More...

This didn't really end the way I wanted it to for the series, not necessarily the book - but I didn't write the book either! I would have liked a little more closure on everything. Although a lot of loose ends were tied up, it seems like there could have been an epilolouge chapter or another book. I always liek to know what happens in the long term. It was a good book for sure though. Very enjoyable and quick read.

I really like this series of books. The author closed up most of the endings well with the characters. I want to an epilogue to the book so that in a few years we find out how all the characters are doing. I was also disappointed that Hope has kids in another universe she will never see. She should be upset to give them up like that rather than ambivilant.

Finally the youngest is able to meet up with Hope. Morg is the little know it all but I can't help but like him. This last of the set was a lovely conclusion to this series. I do recommend this entire series for people who like happily ever after with magic involved. It's best to read the series all in one sitting.
