This was a pretty good book. Much better than her last release, Guilty, but in my opinion, still no where near as good as her older romantic suspense books.
Jessica Ford is a young lawyer for a big D.C. law firm. One night, she gets a call from her boss; he orders her to go to a hotel bar, where the First Lady of the U.S. is waiting, and accompany her to an as yet unknown location. Accustomed to doing what needs to be done for her job, Jess goes. At the hotel, she finds a distraug...more

A very fast-paced, fun, page-turner. Jessica Ford is a young attorney working for the head attorney of the First Lady of the United States, Annette Cooper. When attorney John Davenport asks Jess to meet Mrs. Cooper at a local hotel and get her out of sight of press, etc., Jess follows through. The car they are in as they make their "getaway" meets with tragedy, however, and all in the car die as it explodes, with the exception of Jess, who is thrown from the car. Once she comes to and slowly beg...more

Jessica Ford, a young lawyer, is the sole survivor of a car accident that kills the First Lady. But was it an accident? And can Jessica trust Mark Ryan, the sexy Secret Service agent sent to protect her?
I think I would give this a half-star more. This book thrusts you right into the action, kicking off at high speed and not ever really relenting. Mark Ryan, marry me!
I loved this book! I didn't think it was going to have a romantic twist at all, I was expecting more John Grisham-style legal writing, so I was plesantly surprised at the mixture of crazy action and suspsense and romance.
I felt the beginning was a little slow, and when I say beginning I mean absolute beginning, like the first chapter or so. After that it picks up and burns white hot. I couldn't put it down; first thing when I got up this morning I couldn't wait to start it a...more

I have been a fan of Karen Robards for several years, but I was a bit disappointed by a few of her more recent books, so I was not sure what to expect of her latest: Pursuit which was recently released.
In this story the reader is introduced to Jessica Ford, an ambitious young lawyer working for at a large firm in Washington, D.C. One evening Jessica gets a call from her boss, John Davenport, who is a good friend, and personal attorney to the First Lady, Annette Cooper. Since her boss has had a b...more

Jessica Ford was asked by her boss, Attorney Davenport, to pick up the First Lady. The First lady had fled the White House and was holed up in a bar. Without being noticed Jessica and The First lady quietly escaped the bar and entered the car provided by Mr. Davenport. The next thing Jessica remembers is waking up to a surreal scene with shadowing figures, a burning car, and flashing helicopters. Once Jessica was known as the only survivor of a crash which killed The first Lady, she became the t...more
Audio/Abridged: This was really disappointing, but I was able to finish it. The book starts out with a "Guarding Tess" moment as the First Lady escapes her Secret Service detail with the aid of our heroine. There is a tragic accident and the rest of the book is a formula plot. Our heroine meets her hero, who may or may not be a good guy. Guess which one he ends up being? Even the "big" surprise ending isn't much of a surprise.
Big problem #1 I had, and I may have just missed it, was the pursuit i...more

First of all,I loved the characters.Jess was brave, courageous, clever, smart and caring, basically everything that makes me love her.She didn't have a big attitude or temper, which,if you know me,I absolutely hate.Another thing that I liked about her,and that also remained my favourite even after 2 months after reading it,was that she was quiet. She discovered something, knew that it was a bad thing, made decisions about that and then carried out her plan,a...more

I don't know what to make of this novel. The overall story line--a woman who survives a crash that kills the First Lady of the United States is pursued by killers--was great. Intriguing, complex, and twisty.
The writing however...
Here are some examples of imagery in the book:
...panic that was welling up inside her as irrepressibly as fizz in a shaken soda bottle.

He needs Jess to meet First Lady Annette Cooper, for whom Davenport is a personal lawyer, at a Washington, D.C., hotel. It was a good read about the death of the First Lady who was in the care of, uh, the lawyer lady...sorry, I have forgotten her name. She was the only survivor of the car crash that killed the 1st Lady, having been thrown from the vehicle, landing behind some shrubs, thereby being concealed from the evil people who hurried down the slope, past the shrubs where she lay, unconscious, and to the vehicle where they made certain everyone was dead.
Of course, when they discovered her (the medics, later...more

This is a light romantic/suspense novel. The female protagonist is a young lawyer asked to go pick up the errant First Lady at a bar to help avoid any unwanted publicity. En route, there is an accident and all are killed except for the lawyer. She suspects a plot to murder the First Lady, and that Secret Service is involved. She is suddenly a target, being the only witness to the conspiracy. The hunky head of the Secret Service detail makes it his mission to protect her. Sparks fly, etc. Pretty...more
This was a non-stop action packed nail biter suspenseful read. I gave it 4 stars because the ending is a little unbelievable and abrupt - is the American public so gullible? Jessica Ford is a brand new lawyer who ends up as a sole survivor of a car crash that kills the First Lady, her driver and a Secret Service agent. Accident or conspiracy? - Jess is sure it's the latter. Mark Ryan, Secret Service agent, is assigned to protect her. Then her boss and his secretary die under mysterious circumsta...more

At first she doesn't remember what happened, but when she starts to get her memory back she realizes that it might not have been an accident after all. Story: This book started out really well - I was totally engaged in the action and mystery surrounding the First Lady and Jessica. It was shaping up to be a great read. But once Jess teamed up for real with Mark Ryan it lost some momentum: overlong descriptions on insignificant items crept in, lots of repetitive feelings iterated ad naseum by Jessica, some basic mystery plot holes were unconvincingly papered-over, eight ppl karked it by just over half-way and no uncorrupt fed/cop thought it was...more
I was anxious to read this as it is a true romantic suspense. The basic story is full of intrigue. Mousy lawyer goes to assist the First Lady of the United States and wakes up the only survivor of a deadly car accident. The life of the First Lady is taken so the world is in chaos. The romance is between the survivor, Jess and hunky secret service agent, Mark Ryan, who was in fact the head of the First Ladies detail unit. The hook is, whether or not she can trust this guy, as everyone seems out t...more
I just happened to pick 2 First Lady stories in a row. This is a nice romance with a little (little) intrigue and lots of action. I guess it didn't just click for me because I couldn't "buy" any of it. This sounds funny coming from the girl who loves vampires and werewolves and dragons, oh my! However, this book was set up to be more "realistic" it is about a woman who is in the same car as the First Lady when it crashes. Everyone dies except Jessica. So, now big bad uglies want her dead (uglies...more
Incredible suspenseful, a true page-turner. The plot was exciting and the characters were realistic. I even enjoyed the romantic parts *wink*. It was not overly sexual which for me made it a perfect blend of suspense and romance, but might be a negative for others.

After listening to an hour of the newly released Justice, I was wondering more about the TSTL behavior of heroine Jessica Ford than the plot. She’s in the Secret Service’s witness protection program (of sorts) after witnessing the murder of the First Lady. Now that she is established with her new identity, she only takes the slightest of precautions and has more an attitude of “Why are you making me do this?” than anything else. But I digress because this is one good roman...more

Jessica Ford, a young, quiet lawyer for a premiere DC firm is sent by her boss one night to babysit the First Lady. The First Lady has slipped her security detail and is at a chain motel knocking back drinks at the bar. Jessica’s boss sends a car to collect the First Lady and Jessica and the car crashes killing everyone, except Jessica who is thrown free. In the aftermath of the First Lady’s death, everyone in the world, it appears, is trying to kill Jessica. Why? Who can Jessica trust? Enter Ma...more
Karen Robards stories are usually pretty average, but I found this one to be below what I expect from her. It was not written well at all ("they were stuck together like peanut butter and jelly"), give me a break. The story did have promise as the plot wasn't bad, but it was too unbelievable and the characters were unforgetable. I read it earlier this week and I can't even recall their names. There wasn't must trust between the characters so it was kind of unbelievable that they would even want...more
This was one of the best Karen Robards' novels I've read in a long time. There was non-stop action and a great plotline. I liked the characters a lot too. The only reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is that I thought the ending was wrapped up a little too quickly. I would have liked more of an in depth discussion of what happened to the characters after the murderers were revealed. Everything was too neat and tidy for me. But overall, definitely a quick and exciting read!
I really liked the heroine, Jess, and how Karen Robards characterized her. Jess was strong in a believable fashion. The bad things that happened to her upset her, but she continued on in a sensible fashion. Jess expected to save herself, but she let the hero take over when his expertise would be more effective. The hero was, also, completely comfortable with Jess' strength and willing to use her expertise when useful. A very refreshing change from the average romance hero and heroine.

This was super fast page turner and my adrenaline was in high gear the whole time, but in the end it was rather a weak story and quite repetitious. Part of the appeal for me, however, because I live in DC area I always could visualize exactly where they were and what the surroundings were like. Character development other than two main ones was extremely superficial and whole story was too bizarre and totally unrealistic to have any lasting value-strictly a roller coaster ride-nothing more.
