"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross."
---Sinclair Lewis, author of It Can't Happen Here, 1935

For the first time since the Nixon era, Americans have reason to doubt the future---or even the presence---of democracy. We live in a society where government conspires with big business and big evangelism; where ideologues and religious...more

If anyone is needing a primer on exactly everything that is wrong with the Bush Administration from their wanton disregard for Constitutional precedent to rampant cronyism, then this is the book for you. There aren't any real ground-breaking revelations and nothing that was particularly new for me, but then I am not the average reader. I follow with a bitter heart and an angry eye each new piece of abuse perpetrated by BushCo. and the complete lack of reaction by the apathetic country-at-large....more

It's fashionable to preface a review about a book such as this one with something to the effect of "Every American regardless of political affiliation should read this book." But one of the many things I learned from the Bush reign of error is that about 30% of this country simply doesn't care about their civil rights, liberty, governmental checks and balances, or even basic competence in their leaders. A decent liberal critique of the Bush Administration which characterizes the regime's radical policies as the early stages of totalitarianism. Those who are politically aware are unlikely to learn anything new or gain any unique insight into current events. Though the book does a good job documenting many of the egregious policies and where they may lead the nation.

As Lewis Sinclair wrote:
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross."

Rather prescient, .... eh?

OK, we don't want to face it, but W. has been eroding our freedoms. The checks-and-balances systems isn't working. This book explains it well.
this is a book my dad passed onto me during the second bush term. i just need to get it off my shelf, so i'm going to go ahead and read it.
Decent overview of some of the ways the Bush regime is turning our government into even more of a dictatorship than it already was.

Conasan's book about the threat of creeping authoritarianism post-9/11 is a bit alarmist, but he arrays his facts nicely and writes well.

A good book on the Bush administration's assault on the Constitution. Conason is bright and acerbic, and writes with style.

I got this for renewing my TT membership, but haven't read it yet. I'm a little scared to!
Kind of hard to get through, but brillant and scary.
What I learned: Fascism is always possible.
