Miza is a baby gorilla. This is her story.

In a magical place called the Congo, in the beautiful forests and jungles of Virunga National Park, lives a young female mountain gorilla named Miza. She was just like any other baby gorilla, riding on her mother's back, playing, taking naps. Then, one day, when Miza and her mother were out searching for food, Miza's mother disappe

This is the story of Miza, a baby mountain gorilla who goes missing with her mother, and of how her father went to look for her. Though humans also tried to help, ultimately it was daddy who saved baby Miza and Miza's family who helped care for her when he mother could not be found.

"Miza's story is an important reminder. It shows that family care and protection can help one get strong and feel secure. It shows that dedicated people can help endangered animals survive. And it lets us celebrate th

My middle son gravitates toward informational text, and so when I saw this hardcover book marked down to an astonishingly low five dollars at our Scholastic Book Fair, I snatched it up. Happily, the librarian had given every teacher at our school a coupon good for up to six dollars to put towards the purchase of a new book. Walking away from the fair with my treasure in my hand, I felt that I had gotten a great bargain. I looked forward to sharing the book with not only my son, but with my stude ...more

Grades 3-5. Another real animal story about a family of gorillas. Park rangers noticed a large family of gorillas had been moved by their silverback male-- meaning that something BIG had happened. They traveled up the mountain and discovered that a mother and her 2 year-old were missing. The silverback was absent-- which meant he was out looking for the pair. Much time passed. And then one day the silverback returned... along with the 2 year-old Miza. Miza was sick-- young gorillas often nurse u ...more

This is an amazing story, captivating, bittersweet and informative, told by the authors of _Owen and Mzee_.

Miza, a toddler gorilla, becomes separated from her family in Virunga National Park in the Republic of Congo. Mother gorilla goes off to search for her and Father Silverback moves his entire family into the mountains for safety. The silverback's protective sense is very strong.

Park rangers learn of Miza's disappearance and get involved in the search. They use a gorilla nose print chart in

This book came in our last shipment of books for my middle school library. I just had to read it because the cover is so adorable. Also because Nymeth posted a beautiful review of "Gorillas in the Mist" and I thought it would be an important read. This shows kids how a little gorilla was taken care of by her gorilla family after her mother mysteriously disappears.

Did you know that there are only approx. 700 mountain gorillas left on this planet? To learn more about these magnificent creatures c

LOOKING FOR MIZA is a true story about a mountain gorilla family living on Mount Mikeno of the Congo who lost one of the their own. Both the mother and child went missing, and their leader set off to search for them after moving the rest of the troop to safety.

It is always amazing to read stories about animals, their abilities, and keen senses. The photography by Peter Greste captures amazing shots of this endangered species.

My students are always eager to pick up these non-fiction books from

The Hatkoffs are really stretching for story ideas, I guess... While they do present some interesting information about gorillas (including how the park rangers identify them by their unique nose prints!), this is basically a book about a baby gorilla who went missing for several days and then was found by her gorilla dad. Unlike the unusual and interesting animal story presented in Owen and Mzee, this is a skimpy stretch of a story. Skip it and pick up Gorilla Doctors by Pamela S. Turner instea ...more

This did not seek to answer the questions brought up. Has interesting informational text and photographs about gorillas, but there is very little actual content about Miza. Could do more to combat the issues associated with poaching of gorillas, the bush meat commodity, and logging in gorilla land.

I must admit, I do have a soft spot for monkeys, apes, and gorillas. I can't help it. Yet another amazing true story that was well documented and just a good read. aahhh

This book is the story of a gorilla who is struggling to survive in the wild. It shows how we should protect animals.

I'd give it five stars, but they never found her mother. :(
