So I am reading a 5th grade book for the In2Books reading mentor program. Shredderman is supposed to teach kids about bullies I suppose. Bubba is the bully who picks on people and calls them names. Nolan is the Shredderman...He gets his name because his teacher likes to play guitar and on one of Nolan's paper's as a compliment he said "You Shred man"

So here's the deal...I must be a full-fledged mother now, because my radar was going off like mad on this one. Shredderman is the alter-ego of a bullied kid who decides to get even with the school jerk. He puts up his own website, posting mean pictures, and taunting songs about said mean boy. Now, I'm all for the underdog, and esp. when he overcomes a jerk, but isn't that, like, cyber-bullying??? Not a good idea, or lesson for the kids reading it!
Nolan is fed up with the school bully "Bubba." Thanks to Bubba, every other kid has an awful nickname: Nolan is "Nerd," not just to Bubba, but to his classmates, too. When the class gets an assignment to create a newspaper front page, Nolan jumps at the chance to expose Bubba for the cruel troublemaker he is. Thanks to his mad computer skills, Nolan can complete the task through a website under a pseudonym: Shredderman!

This is a pretty fun little series. For children, it might be best, though, to use it as a guided activity. Otherwise, it might come across that you have to have a lot of money and be really intelligent to overcome bullies, which seems counter to the point. It's also sometimes a bit on the mean side. I had some mixed feelings about this: I felt like Nolan came a little too close to bullying behavior himself in his effort to unmask the school bully. And I didn't like how he was hiding so many things from his parents (the mom-code-of-conduct requires me to insert that comment! :^). Fifth grade; Alvin (Bubba) Bixby is a bully. Nolan is a nerd. You can kind of figure out where this is going, and yes, it goes there—Bubba torments Nolan but Nolan gets back by exposing Bubba’s bullying via the Internet. I'm not the target demographic for this book, but I found it pleasant enough. A fun little romp that actually might get kids to think about what they do on a day to day basis.
Plus, I think any author would do well to read books like this from time to time, simply because they are such tight little examples of story. Bubba is the school bully. He has awful nicknames for everyone, ruins his classmates' lives, and worse yet, none of the adults have been able to catch him in the act. I really didn't like this book, and not because I'm not a fan of graphic novels. Yes, I guess it was good that Nolan stands up for himself against the bully, Bubba, but he went it about it in some pretty ugly ways, in my opinion. It was like he turned into the bully himself, and he did it in a cowardly way (online, through a newspaper, etc.). This is not the message to send kids. This would have ranked higher for me except for one major flaw in the theme for me: it doesn't seem right to encourage children to fight bullying by humiliating the bully. Isn't that bullying? Granted, in this book the teachers and parents were doing nothing to stop the bully, but it still seems like it would have been better for him to take his "evidence" right to a teacher instead of broadcasting it on the web. Nolan Byrd , a nerdie kid who wants to stop a bully in school whos name is bubba. Nolan starts a web site called shredderman. Its like a anti-bully thing but shredderman is like a super hero guy. Nolan hides all these camras in his back pack to catch bubb in act of bulley. Nolan decides to write all these things bubba has done and write them on little papper tabs and gets on top of the school roof and dump them all the palyground. It lead him to something that shows you why bubba bulleys.
I absolutely loved this book. I thought it was well done and the voices matched the characters very well. The story is about a little boy who his constantly being made fun of for being a nerd. Nolan has had enough of the school bully Bubba. Stemming from his school project assignment Nolan gets an idea to expose Bubba and catch him red handed doing mean things to other students. Nolan devises a plan and sets up Shredderman.com. It’s humorous and creative all the way through.

This is an awesome book for kids who are bullied. Nolan--aka the "NERD"--is constantly bullied, especially by Bubba Bixby. When the class is given a special assignment, Nolan decides to create a website dedicated to revealing Bubba's mean-ness, including pictures, jokes, and tell-all's about every time he sees Bubba in the act. Soon the whole school knows about the website and eventually the truth about Bubba comes out.
This first book in the set accurately portrayed some of the unnoticed bullying that goes on in classrooms around the country. The hero certainly finds a high tech way to deal with the bullying that takes place. This is one of the few books, I've found so far, that actually use the internet in such a well developed way in the plot for this age group (2nd grade-5th grades.)

Nolan and everyone else in his school is picked on by Bubba. Nothing the administration does stops Bubba. He gives everyone knicknames, steals and hits. Nolan, for his school project, decides to get even and creates an online newspaper called "shredderman" and posts pictures, news and jokes all related to Bubba. Funny and a good easy chapter book - especially for boys

I listened to this one as a audiobook. It's narrated by an 11-year-old boy, but it's not too painful - he's really good about 99% of the time. His voice for a random classmate though was hilarious - apparently there's one British kid in the class. :P

If this book hadn't have been required, I would have stopped reading it half way through. I thought the unintended moral was too obvious and negative. I think the characters of children's books should be positive role models to the readers, and Shredderman wasn't. Other than the theme and characters tho, it was a well written book.
Some people question this book because of it's content but I read it every year to my 3rd graders and towards the end I sit right on the floor and gather them in as close as I can and I finish reading the book and cry. It is a great book that touches my heart every year and then I talk about bullies and being a victim.

My 4th grader is participating in Battle of the Books this year and my plan is to read the books along with him. We read this book first. It's about a boy that is bullied at school so he takes matters into his own hands, and starts a website that targets the bully.
I was kind of disappointed with this because it seemed to me that it turned the boy into the bully. My son loved it though and is on book 3 of the series all ready.

This book is REALLY entertaining. i love series books like this and i love how they made more than one book of this series. They actully made a movie after this book which helps me understand it better. Its about how a bully gets busted. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO READ AN EXITING BOOK.
This book teaches children that bullying is not OK, but cyberbullying is heroic...a very dangerous message to send to kids. It also shows the lead character secretly photographing and videoing classmates--an action that is not OK. I can't imagine how this book got published in this day of bullying awareness.
This was a very cute transitioning into being ready to read chapter books. It is the first in a series. Nolan, "The Fifth Grade Nerd" creatively uses his "nerdy computer talents" to bring the bully of the school to his knees while he learns to stand up for himself. Boys especially will enjoy it.
Great choice for grades 3 and up. Shredderman is the alias of Nolan, a boy bullied to distraction by the evil Bubba Bixby. No adult can stop Bubba so Nolan takes him down using technology in a really masterful way. Lots to talk about here, and kids will all relate to Nolan's predicament.
I liked this gem of a book, and I'll recommend it to my 4th and 5th graders. Poor Nolan and his 5th grade friends are tormented by Bubba Bigsby, the school bully. Nolan uses a school project to fight Bubba's bullying ways, and a new identity is born... Shredderman!
