"The Challenge Of The Sea" by Arthur C. Clarke is a great book about adventure, considering it's old age. When seas get rough, there is no telling what might happen to even the mightiest ships out there, and this book provides a nice story about that. Clarke was successful in writing this book because when I read it, I got the sense of adventure and I learned quite a bit from this. Middle school students might get a good sense from this book, as it is a good "oldies" read.
