Holy Mackerel! What a freaking ride! *fans self*

I think the first thing you need to know is this is not a romance. There are romantic elements in the story but it's not a romance so if you go into this novel expecting a romance, you'll be sorely disappointed. What you will find is an adventure, a mystery that takes you on a wild ride leaving you on the edge of your seat wondering what's going to happen next, what will the Fathom's Five get into and how will they get out of the trouble they inev...more

This book is pure entertainment. It's the first book of the series, but the main characters are introduced smoothly and we get to know them and indentify them and love them pretty soon. The book is plot driven and it's focused on the action, but each character has a little weakness that makes you want to know them better and read the following book. And they're very hot!

The action sequences were phenomenal and they kept me on edge. They were maybe a little bit over the top, but it's because the...more

I'm just barely a third of the way through this book and I must have rolled my eyes at least 500 million times. In fact, I'm pretty sure I now hold the world record for incredulity-induced eye-rolling.
I tried, really, really tried, to read this book in the spirit that it was written - sexy, adventurous fun - but my suspension of disbelief was rudely stabbed to death when (view spoiler)[that one generically sexy guy injects his own freaking heart with adrenaline after ingesting an unknown poison...more

Wow, jam packed with a roller coaster ride of action/adventure! I loved this book. It was very different from what I expected. I agree with some of the other reviewers about the storyline being kind of an Indiana Jones stars in the Da Vinci Code premise. The author did a fantastic job of providing very vivid descriptions to make the action sequences come to life. I was hooked and had a hard time putting the book down. Some parts of the story are just a bit over the top, but no more so than what...more

In the best James Bond or Indiana Jones tradition, the Fathom's Five are five handsome, skilled and clever gay men working for Professor Fathom as treasure hunters. Almost half the book is spent to introduce us to the five:

- Jake Stone, the newest member of the group, is a bit of a lone wolf; he is "for hire", means that if you pay him enough, he will find everything you want. Jake is not a bad man, he is only used to take care of himself, and only himself. His only Achilles' heel is young Sam,...more

Well, this was idiotic.
Initially, I thought to myself: "It's supposed to be silly and unrealistic, that's the whole point", but eventually I was exasperated by the sheer idiocy of this book.
-There is no true investment with the characters - even though a good chunk of the beginning is not story, but rather character introductions.
-There are plenty of sex scenes. The scenarios read like porn rather than compelling erotica/romantica.
-Every nationality is a stereotype (apart from Americans).
-Good l...more

A thoroughly enjoyable read it’s faced paced, full of adventure and mystery that kept me turning pages until the end. It’s the first book in a series and I can’t wait to read the rest. I read Scott Sapphire and the Emerald Orchid from this author and loved it I knew I had to get more from him if that’s the type of adventure stories he writes.

It’s very much like an Indiana Jones/Da Vinici Code type of adventure. There is an artifact that everyone wants a...more

Reviewed by Stacey Jo: Wow! This book was fantastic! It was complete action packed fun with hot guys and a little bit of lovin’. Think, Indiana Jones meets gay Charlie’s Angles. At least, that’s how I kinda compare it. It has many of those elements. Regardless of what you want to compare it to, it’s well worth the ride you take when you turn the first page.

The story is about five very different guys, all gay of course, who all have different skills or specialties. Jake Stone is an adventurer wh...more

What do a Brazilian born doctor, a Texas cowboy, a model-gorgeous Italian orphan, a So. Cal. college student and star quarterback, and a mercenary treasure-hunting loner from New York have in common? They just happen to make up the team of Professor Maximilian Fathom’s sizzling, suave, and sexy thrill seeking heroes in the action packed adventure The Cross of Sins.

From the mountains of Vienna to the desert in Turkey to the canals of Venice and points far and wide, this team of multi-talented men...more

The beginning was in Indiana Jones over-the-top style, but I liked that. I like how m/m fiction is growing and branching and I really, really wanted to like this one. But... I just couldn't connect to the characters and I found myself skimming through the parts of the book just to move along. I'll eventually try the second book, because I hope it will provide more depth to the characters. Considering all the great reviews, maybe my expectations were too high.

What do you get when you cross five hot gay men in their 20's with a blind aristocratic professor from Europe? Apparently a lot of sex and action in a story that is pulled from the pages of a teenage boys comic book.

I wanted to like this genre thriller - I'm gay, I like action and adventure, and the idea of the book seemed compelling (a lost Renaissance statue of a naked Christ being sought by two competing forces - our gay protagonists, versus the evil Catholic hooded secret society) - but the...more

Disclosure: Storm Moon Press provided a free review copy of this book to me.

I saw this book mentioned on a blog interview with the author, Geoffrey Knight. In the interview, he was talking about his childhood love for action heroes like the Six Million Dollar Man, and how he had always wished that the hot, manly action heroes could be getting it on with each other instead of the female love interests, and how he set out to write that. The Cross of Sins is his first book, and he said that people...more

I recently reviewed "The Curse of the Dragon God". That was the third book in a series and I, a series addict, immediately set about procuring the previous two books to read.

"The Cross of Sins", the first book in the "Fathom’s Five" series is as I said about "Curse of the Dragon God", a combination of James Bond, Indiana Jones and Charlie’s Angels, but featuring a cast of hunky (and hung) beautiful gay men.

This installment of the series, however, is way beyond what I expected. I started reading...more

I won't even bother summarizing the story, the other reviews have covered that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a fun, clever and sexy adventure. I especially enjoyed reading about gay men who have no hangups about their sexuality...as a matter of fact they use it to their advantage.

This first book is clearly written with understanding that there would be many books to follow (thank GOD!). The characters are all likeable, some are given more background than the others but I have a feeling...more

My. What a rollercoaster ride this was. I sort of knew what I was in for when I bought Cross of Sins though I was uncertain whether it would be merely a gay Matthew Reilly - ie, no sex and/or romance. Well, CoS turned out to be exactly the type of adventure story I've waited to see written - action, adventure, SEX and (later on, I'm promised) romance!

It's over-the-top, unrealistic (the way an Indiana Jones movie is) and as long as you realize this and enjoy these escapist movies, you should love...more

A lot of people I respect and love enjoy this book very much, so clearly this is a matter of taste. I didn't finish this, so I won't rate, but this book just isn't my cup of tea. I never connected to anyone. Many, many points of view--not quite headhopping, I don't think, but as a reader I never grounded to anyone. I'm incredibly character-focused as a reader, and all I want to do is bond with someone and follow them around. But I never bonded, and I had a hard time keeping up with what was goin...more

The Crimson Crown is a secret sect of the church that has committed many of the most heinous crimes imaginable. The artist Videlle was tortured and killed for creating a unique piece of art. The piece is a marble crucifix of Christ on the cross naked and depicted as a man and called The Cross of Sins. The cross has been cleverly hidden somewhere in the world and the hints revealing its location have been scattered across the globe. T...more

This book was great. It’s the perfect mixture of Indiana Jones adventures, ‘The Divinci Code’ religious mystery, ‘The Mummy’ humor and hand-to-hand combat, and M/M erotica. In this book the adventurous, lucky to be alive, athletic, and intelligent men are introduced in a high action and mega sexy novel. The blind yet not handicapped Professor Maximilian Fathom pulls together his stellar, hunky, skilled team of men from around the world to unite in their fight for freedom and equality. They track...more

Wow, what a ride. Think Indiana Jones, James Bond and make it more of a wild time and gay. Anyway these 5 guys work for Professor Fathom finding lost objects of value and doing it for altruistic reasons. The loner fortune hunter Jake, the football player/student Will, the Brazilian Dr. Eden, the Italian model and art expert Luca and the Texas cowboy Shane. They go on a quest for the “Cross of Sins” while being pursued by a weird off-shoot of the Catholics who want to destroy it. It’s non-stop ac...more

This book took me completely by surprise. I was expecting little plot littered with a smattering of sex every few pages but I was glad I was totally off the mark. From the first page the author takes you on a roller coaster ride that just speeds up the more you read. Action and intrigue fill page after page as the good guys try to outdo the bad guys in order to get their hands on a historic relic that has more sentimental value than a monetary one-at least to them.

Jake; a treasure hunter, thril...more

I freely admit that the book's a bit ridiculous and over-the-top in places - imagine gay Indiana Jones! - and sometimes the characters behave a bit dumbly, but overall, it's a great read with likable characters, fast action and humor - though it's definitely not aimed at younger audience what with the graphic sex scenes. My favorite character was Luca, the Italian with the mysterious past, and his scenes with Will were just about perfect. For once, I wished there was more romance, because I real...more

Totally sexy thrill ride across the world!
Other than some typos that I desperately wanted to correct, this book was perfect! There was action & adventure, gripping plot twists, and some of the hottest sex scenes that steamed up even this girl's glasses. And seeing the growth of each character through their journey tells me I'm going to get to know each of Fathom's boys really well in future books. This book was a total joy to read!

There's a lack of depth in the characters, but then again whoever who picks up this book is surely not one expecting such. This is as said by several comments - Hardy Boys meet Indiana Jones. The good part is that the leads are gays - hot, studly gays. I think sometimes there are way too many characters to remember to follow the flow properly. Still, I appreciate a story that is not merely boy-meets-boy but with adventures.

2,5 Stars. I really wanted to like this book. It sounded great and it appeared as a kind of gay Indiana Jones team effort. But I just didn't get into it.
(view spoiler)[
The history mystery (including evil secret catholic society) was a little ridiculous and the characters remained shallow and cliched. The sex scenes seemed to be thrown in as an afterthought and didn't serve any purpose story wise that I could see (except the swimming pool nearly sex scene).
I tried to see it as a comedy/satire -

I wish there was a specific genre for "m/m action/adventure". Even if in this case it was m/m/m/m/m. I loved the book. It's so great to be able to read an action/adventure story featuring gay characters. The action is sometimes a little over the top but definitely kept me turning pages and staying up WAY past my bedtime to read just a little bit more. LOL. The characters are nicely done and the plot is mostly fast paced. I liked the combination of Indian Jones meets The da Vinci Code. What more...more

After I read Riddle of the Sands I went back and tracked down the first in the series, The Cross of Sins. You can tell this is the first book in the series: the rhythm of the language is choppier and there are copyediting issues. But the characters from the Fathom's Five series shine through and the plot holds true. I liked it.

I don't think I have anything new to add; the previous reviews were spot on. This series is epic if a little difficult to read at times as there are so many detailed action scenes. However, it's a fun book with plenty of characterisation, back stories and adventure. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Fathom's Five: The Cross of Sins was a thrilling action packed adventure read that quickly sucked me in and had me loving the five heroes. Shane, a reckless young Texas cowboy, Will, a thrill seeking history student, Luca, an orphaned Italian model, Eden a sexy doctor, and Jake, a career adventurer, make up Professor Fathom's five.

In The Cross of Sins, these five set out on a journey in search of a controversial statue that was lost long ago, racing against a fanatical religious group, who will...more
