This volume covers Rubens, Hals, Rembrandt and Vermeer. The reproductions are only okay, but the text is just what I needed. I particularly appreciated the background pieces on topics like commercial Amsterdam, and the Year in the Life sections on what was going on in Europe and the colonies during the 17th century were nicely done. Sometimes a potted history is just what you need.
This is a large series of books, and the volume I read was about the Pre-renaissance in Northern Europe. It focused on 4 artists - The Limbourg Brothers, Jan Van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden and Hieronymus Bosch. The book was very well done! Not only did it discuss the lives of the artists and their artwork in great detail, it also told about the historical events that occurred at the time the artists were alive and what may have influenced their paintings.
