Most of us look at our days in the wrong way: We exaggerate yesterday. We overestimate tomorrow. We underestimate today. The truth is that the most important day you will ever experience is today. Today is the key to your success. Maxwell offers 12 decisions and disciplines-he calls it his daily dozen-that can be learned and mastered by any person to achieve success.

The writer admits early on in the book that he hoards snippets and it shows. Most of this book is a restatement of his central theme using different quotes and stories. Based around his "daily dozen," Maxwell urges that "The way you live your life today is preparing you for your tomorrow."

Each chapter is dedicated to a different focus. Maxwell explains how your decisions impact your life and gives suggestions on how to carefully craft your actions in the present to create your future. For exampl...more

I can't stand the feeling of one day blurring into another, of weeks where you just don't feel anything had changed or improved. As I age I'm becoming more aware of my limited time - if I died tomorrow, would I look back on what I've done in the last ten years and say "Yep - that sure was worth the effort?" Or would I wonder why I spent so much time worrying about unimportant things, wasting energy on unimportant things, and not doing the stuff that I really cared about?

This is probably the best...more

This is without a doubt my all time favorite motivational book. Every chapter in it is full of inspiration toward leading a full and rewarding life. I've read it at least 10 times and every time I am inspired and uplifted. I'm just going to list the 12 chapter titles to give you the book in a nutshell or rather 12 nutshells.

1. Today's attirude gives me possibilities.
2. Today's priorities give me focus.
3. Today's health gives me strength.
4. Today's family gives me stability.

Not too bad. There were a couple of good nuggets. In fact, I'll have my 10 year old son review chapters 1-3 (attitude, positive thinking, priorities). I did find, however, this books was a collection of John Maxwell's anecdotes ("When I was 22...") and powerful quotes from big thinkers. There wasn't much science or weight behind his approach. I enjoy books that refer to numbers or studies rather than one person's personal view of the world. While his view is fantastic and he's obviously successf...more

I debated between liking this and REALLY liking this book. This is a good book and I highly recommend reading it. Today really does matter. We should focus on the priorities, abilities, and options that are open to us now. We MUST live today because we live IN today NOW. Of course, there are things that we can do today to make tomorrow even better when it becomes the Today that really matters. So, tomorrow matters, too, but we're not living tomorrow today. It isn't here yet, so we shouldn't be b...more

Overall I enjoyed this book, and there are a few tips that I picked up that I'd like to incorporate into my daily practices. I was particularly struck by the simple idea of outlining your values in a tangible way - on paper where you will see it often - and evaluating decisions based on those values.

I was looking forward to the chapter on Faith. While I knew that Mr. Maxwell was a Christian preacher, I enjoyed his perspective and expected the section regarding faith to be broad and encompassing....more

I would recommend this book to anyone. This book had really great advice much of which I took to heart about how to have a better life. I have actually decided to implement some of his practices. One of the pearls of wisdom he offers is to only work on one weakness at a time. I think this is super important. You are setting yourself up for failure if you try to work on too many weaknesses at once.

I also loved his truths about how different ages are for different things. I am just entering my th...more
this book was very inspirational and gave me good advice to use throughout my life. What i liked most about the book was the way the author communicated with the reader by giving examples that he experienced throughout his life. it was a very good read and i look forward to using the skills this book taught me and incorporating them into my daily life

"Money doesn't change men, it merely unmasks them. If a man is naturally selfish or arrogant or greedy, the money brings that out, that's all.” - Henry Ford

Sacrifice now, for more options later, money may not bring happiness but it does bring options.

This book is about having value, prioritizing, and practicing them. Really enjoyed this book.

Great book about your every day planning and activities with useful life examples. Very true that your success and happiness depends on how you spend every single day of your life, how you act, what do you feel, what do you think and how you accept and challenges and improving yourself as personality.

I am a lifelong fan of John C. Maxwell first of all. Today Matters has been sitting on my bookshelf for about 2 years and I finally got a chance to go through it yesterday. It has extremely useful tips which can be applied instantly. Today Matters was written for me.
I have had the privilege of late to become a source of motivation and inspiration for a few people and I often tell them that every now and then the motivator needs to be motivated. Yesterday was one of those days for me and John's...more
Enjoyed. Some great tips/reminders on how to make the most of the day and more importantly how to stay focused on what is the most important in each day.

I have read several of Maxwell's books and enjoyed them all, including this one. Some have criticized the book because Maxwell falls back on some of his early works or works from others, I cannot criticize him for using the best source material available at the time. I learned a few things that should help me be a better person, and that is the main goal...

Very good book. Great advice on how to live an intentional life with no regrets.
i have read several other of Maxwell's books in the past, and this was not my favorite. most of the others i have read were targeted at leadership while this book is more of a general "how to live a good life" manual. don't get me wrong...there is a lot of good stuff in any Maxwell book. i am happy when i realize that i am unwittingly doing something right, and i am driven to reflect when i realize that i am not doing something that he recommends. not a bad read, but i prefer other general life...more

Makes you do thing today and don't wait for tomorrow.
This is a FABULOUS book. I like workbooks because they help me sort my thinking. This helped me think deeply about what I want to be in life and my motivations.

It truly is a road map for success and within a few years of reading this, my dreams were realized. I'm doing what I love to do now and I'm using all my talents to my best abilities.

John Maxwell is an amazing writer. He's one of the few authors that integrates business principles with Christian principles and he does it beautifully. I've...more

I got this review from my Coach/consultant Peter Shallard:

I'm reading the book "Today Matters: 12 Daily Practices to Guarantee Tomorrow's Success"

… and just a few pages in, I realized that it has Brian Derrick written all over it. It's a must-read imo

Get up early and read it - this is the kind of book that would keep me awake at night if I read it in bed. In a good way (but with the side effects of "good intention" insomnia)

I love it, it reminds me of keep myself motivate it everyday.
for the things that I love.
The book is an enlightening one as it sheds the light on the important aspects you need to consider for improvement everyday. You make a list of the values the book marks, and work on them day by day. This way, you will guarantee that you won't regret a thing tomorrow.
Kevin Nagle
Found the book to be refreshing and enlightening. Some days are difficult to face the daily assignments of work but this showed light at the end of the tunnel. Indicated the reasons why we do what we do but also made me realize all of the good and bad managers that I have worked with and for over the years. A good read for the individual looking to improve their leadership talents.
