Every once, in awhile, I to go to my first love in reading; non-fiction. I really enjoy John C. Maxwell because he’s a motivational speaker who uses Christian values to share his thoughts on different subjects. His book, Today Matters, can be used by any faith system. Don’t let the word “Christian” hold you up from reading this book because it’s not a bunch of ideas set to scripture.

TODAY MATTERS and there are 12 principles to put into practice.

I can't stand the feeling of one day blurring into another, of weeks where you just don't feel anything had changed or improved. As I age I'm becoming more aware of my limited time - if I died tomorrow, would I look back on what I've done in the last ten years and say "Yep - that sure was worth the effort?" Or would I wonder why I spent so much time worrying about unimportant things, wasting energy on unimportant things, and not doing the stuff that I really cared about?

This is probably the best

The writer admits early on in the book that he hoards snippets and it shows. Most of this book is a restatement of his central theme using different quotes and stories. Based around his "daily dozen," Maxwell urges that "The way you live your life today is preparing you for your tomorrow."

Each chapter is dedicated to a different focus. Maxwell explains how your decisions impact your life and gives suggestions on how to carefully craft your actions in the present to create your future. For exampl

This is without a doubt my all time favorite motivational book. Every chapter in it is full of inspiration toward leading a full and rewarding life. I've read it at least 10 times and every time I am inspired and uplifted. I'm just going to list the 12 chapter titles to give you the book in a nutshell or rather 12 nutshells.

2. Today's priorities give me focus.
3. Today's health gives me strength.
4. Today's family gives me stability.

This book was FAB-U-LOUS! I wish I could rate this higher, because this book was literally one of the best I've ever read. As a person who seeks to live intentionally and constantly better myself, I found Maxwell's 12 daily disciplines highly practical and attainable. And I really appreciated the approach to this book. While Maxwell is a Christian and certainly shaped each point through a Christian worldview, this wasn't just another fluffy-devotional-spiritual-growth-book.

To me, Maxwell provid

It is always good to read a John Maxwell book! In this book, Maxwell lays out 12 things you can do every day to grow yourself. He give good examples of how he has implemented these practices in his own life. The good news is you don't have to start doing them all on day one to get value from them. You take few at a time and work on them until you are ready to move on to others. Once you have one practice down, you start using it. Overall a good approach and set of practices to provide success in ...more

Not too bad. There were a couple of good nuggets. In fact, I'll have my 10 year old son review chapters 1-3 (attitude, positive thinking, priorities). I did find, however, this books was a collection of John Maxwell's anecdotes ("When I was 22...") and powerful quotes from big thinkers. There wasn't much science or weight behind his approach. I enjoy books that refer to numbers or studies rather than one person's personal view of the world. While his view is fantastic and he's obviously successf ...more

I have read several of John C. Maxwell's books through the BetterBookClub.com program at work. I have also seen him speak at two different Leadercast seminars. With each book read for BetterBookClub and each seminar attended I have learned so much! He writes books in a simple and mater-of-fact tone that translates very well to all readers. In this book he focuses on simple formulas that the reader needs to keep in mind: Good Decisions - Daily Discipline = A Plan without a Payoff (this is like go ...more

Once in a while I like to read self help books. Today Matters by John C. Maxwell was highly recommended book by many. The full name of the book actually adds to the Today Matters a second title, 12 Daily Practices to Guarantee Tomorrow's Success, which actually tells quite much about the book.

Book explains a simple way to succeed tomorrow - make every day count. The whole idea of the book is to understand to concentrate to today. Make the ri

I debated between liking this and REALLY liking this book. This is a good book and I highly recommend reading it. Today really does matter. We should focus on the priorities, abilities, and options that are open to us now. We MUST live today because we live IN today NOW. Of course, there are things that we can do today to make tomorrow even better when it becomes the Today that really matters. So, tomorrow matters, too, but we're not living tomorrow today. It isn't here yet, so we shouldn't be b ...more

Overall I enjoyed this book, and there are a few tips that I picked up that I'd like to incorporate into my daily practices. I was particularly struck by the simple idea of outlining your values in a tangible way - on paper where you will see it often - and evaluating decisions based on those values.

I was looking forward to the chapter on Faith. While I knew that Mr. Maxwell was a Christian preacher, I enjoyed his perspective and expected the section regarding faith to be broad and encompassing.

A very good book, lots of very good and essential insights in the search for a better self. Love the style of the author, very easy to read, understandable, lots of stories and examples presented to support the key points. The structure of the 12 practices is also the table of contents of the book. You always know where you are and what you reading and learning. It is up to the reader to really make today matter. I would definitely recommend this book, wish I had discovered it earlier.

I would recommend this book to anyone. This book had really great advice much of which I took to heart about how to have a better life. I have actually decided to implement some of his practices. One of the pearls of wisdom he offers is to only work on one weakness at a time. I think this is super important. You are setting yourself up for failure if you try to work on too many weaknesses at once.

I also loved his truths about how different ages are for different things. I am just entering my th

"Money doesn't change men, it merely unmasks them. If a man is naturally selfish or arrogant or greedy, the money brings that out, that's all.” - Henry Ford

Sacrifice now, for more options later, money may not bring happiness but it does bring options.

This book is about having value, prioritizing, and practicing them. Really enjoyed this book.

- Choosing to have a positive attitude every day
- Constantly revisiting your priorities and spending time on things that are most important

Practical practices (hey, say that 12 times) that everyone would be better off practicing daily. I went through this book with a group of women in a Mastermind group and was very encouraged walking through this book. I would encourage people to read this book with others and have a discussion about what you're reading!

One of the best books in my library and I benefitted a lot from reading it. I loved John's honesty in admitting several areas where he himself failed to perform. In essence, any success in life can not be achieved without a combination of Decision (Goal Setting) and Discipline (Goal Getting).

Great book about your every day planning and activities with useful life examples. Very true that your success and happiness depends on how you spend every single day of your life, how you act, what do you feel, what do you think and how you accept and challenges and improving yourself as personality.

Great book to read! It focuses in how to make the best use of today because we tend to underestimate the importance of today by making just a few crucial decisions about the 12 Daily Practices that John Maxwell recommends, and then managing those decisions daily.
